A Note From LarryBy Larry Selby, VP, Books, Newsletters, and e-Products
Law Journal Press eBooks Are Coming at No Additional Charge to Subscribers! It was a pleasure meeting many of you at the booth at AALL this year. The weather in Seattle was wonderful. The city offered a very pleasant backdrop to a productive meeting.
I had the opportunity to attend a number of very interesting sessions on eBooks this year apart from time spent on the exhibitor floor. One of the results of your feedback at the meeting is that Law Journal Press (LJP) has decided to begin to offer its content in eBook format at no additional charge to print and online subscribers. Yes, we’ll be applying annual new and renewal product price increases for 2014, as all publishers will, but we don’t plan for those to be above our normal increases despite the inclusion of our content in eBook format. The analytical content written by preeminent experts is what you are purchasing. The subscriber should be provided with the content in a variety of formats and decide which format or formats they wish to use.
We’ll be ramping up the production of eBooks during the late summer and delivering them to existing subscribers upon renewal of their product subscriptions. You’ll begin to note this especially with the releases due to renew from November forward. If you’re an existing subscriber to an LJP title, your Standing Order releases will include access to the eBook at no additional charge for individual users. Please check your release filing instructions for directions on how to download the eBook to your eReader.
Again, thank you for your frank feedback at AALL this year. We’ll do our best to incorporate your comments into our business practices in the hope of providing you with ever better products and service going forward.

The Results Are In…From May 22 through June 5, LJP conducted our annual enhancements survey. Respondents were asked three questions about possible enhancements to the product, interest in dedicated mobile apps, and different pricing options. Respondents were offered a chance to win a $100 gift card as an incentive to participate. Findings from the enhancements survey are an important tool we use to make decisions about how to move forward with the LJP product line digitally.
The following three enhancement ideas ranked the highest: Quick Treatments on Topical Subjects, Single Sign-On for Subscribed ALM Sites and Printing and Exporting Enhancements.

On July 13th the city of Seattle welcomed over 1,800 members of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) to its 106th annual gathering. President Jean Wenger welcomed her colleagues to the 2013 event with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the exhibit hall. Over 85% of those attending were from law school libraries and the Large Law segment.
Over the three-day event, these professionals focused on topics like cost effective legal research instruction, how to best utilize social media, professional writing, and enhancing their business skills. Of course, they were also there to meet with their trusted business partners like ALM. ALM greeted hundreds of folks to our booth and provided insight and demonstrations on the value of our ALI, RivalEdge and Law Journal Press resources. These sessions were well received, and many were surprised to learn how expansive, yet easy to use our online programs are. Also promoted were our new ALM periodical applications for the Apple platforms. Many were pleased to know, they could access full functionality of our regional and national papers for free until the end of September. From these interactions, we were able to accrue over 230 leads for various sectors of the business which will inevitably result in better relationships. So, keep an eye out for these opportunities to come your way.
However, the session of most benefit that ALM brought to Seattle was the Tuesday morning breakfast we hosted for over 150 attendees to hear Kevin Iredell’s review of the 2013 ALM Law Librarian Survey. From this, our guests gained important insight to the purchasing, performance, and productivity behaviors of their colleagues throughout the country. This unique presentation really displayed to our audience the guidance and leadership ALM can provide to an evolving and complicated landscape. As such, Kevin will be looking to expand the survey even further in 2014 with a greater number of Small Law participants to provide even greater demographic diversity and feedback. Many librarians and legal professionals will be looking forward to those results from Kevin next year in San Antonio! See you there!

Upcoming LJP TitlesBy Neil Hirsch, Editor in Chief
New to the Law Journal Press library this fall are three remarkable books sure to become classics in their respective fields. All of them will be available in print, online and eBook formats.
Lisa Oratz, Senior Counsel at Perkins Coie, leads a team of her firm’s experts in authoring Social Media Law, a volume fully explaining the legal concepts involved throughout the world of social media. There’s no getting around it, social media is a part of
all our lives and impacts every individual and business. It permeates advertising and employment and even plays a leading role in securities trading. Social Media Law not only delves into the issues and policies in analyzing how social media is used, it examines all of the legalities involved. Detailed discussions cover business and licensing considerations, along with potential liability for content that may overstep legal boundaries. Privacy issues are fully covered as are protections for intellectual property. Of special interest to attorneys is how social media affects the legal community in raising ethical issues in marketing law firms and protecting confidentiality. Social media also plays an important role in litigation, from researching the backgrounds of jurors and witnesses, to discovery and even in the trial itself.
Lead author Lisa Oratz has been practicing law for over 25 years in the areas of technology, intellectual property and entertainment law. She regularly counsels clients regarding the clearance, protection and licensing of copyrights, trademarks and other intellectual property rights and assists clients with obtaining, maintaining and enforcing copyright and trademark rights and registrations. She works with many Internet, digital media and traditional companies on a broad range of topics including privacy, content liability, social media issues, intellectual property, site terms and contracts.
Ms Oratz also represents artists, authors, musicians and composers, and works with corporate clients, game developers, publishers and individuals in entertainment related matters involving music, publishing, art, theatre, film and television.
Autumn will also see the publication of Hedge Funds: Formation, Operation and Regulation, the most comprehensive volume yet on managing and investing in these extremely important and technical financial institutions. Leading experts from the law firm of Schulte Roth & Zabel have combined their talents to make the complex world of hedge funds, if not simple, at least understandable. Here is the one place to find analysis of hedge fund structure, investment, management strategy and regulation compliance. Features include full coverage of required documentation and tax liability. Separate discussions are devoted to seed investors and the special position of registered hedge funds. There is even a separate chapter on the role ERISA plays in hedge funds.
Hedge Fund co-author Stephanie R. Breslow is a partner, co-head of the Investment Management Group and a member of the Executive Committee at Schulte Roth & Zabel. Her practice focuses on the formation of liquid-securities funds, private equity funds and
providing regulatory advice to investment managers and broker-dealers. She also represents fund sponsors and institutional investors in connection with seed-capital investments in fund managers and acquisitions of interests in investment-management businesses, and represents funds of funds and other institutional investors in connection with their investment activities. Ms Breslow was named one of The Hedge Fund Journal’s 50 Leading Women in Hedge Funds.
