Volume 4 June 2017 A Note from Danielle & Jane Our second session of 2017 has come to an end and as usual it flew by. In April we said goodbye to Amy and wished her luck as she began a new job and we welcomed Jane, our new program co- instructor, and Jessica, our new music therapist. Highlights from this session included a visit from violinist Edwin Huizinga, getting involved with Pitch-In Canada Week as well as with MODC’s Sensitivity Awareness Training. Session 17 will begin on July 17 th with a 2 week break for Making It Happen (July 24-Aug 3) as well as the 2 week Conductive Education Intensive (Aug 14- 25). Make sure you connect with Danielle to reserve your spot! Speechless Blog This session of L.I.F.E., the group finished watching the first season of a TV show called Speechless. The show follows the experiences of Maya the overprotective mom, Jimmy the carefree dad, JJ the oldest son with a great sense of humor and Cerebral Palsy, Ray the brainiac, and Dylan the athletic daughter. The L.I.F.E. group enjoyed the show and felt that it did a great job in addressing a number of assumptions about disability in a humorous way. The entire blog post will be online at the end of July. New Song in the Works!

L.I.F.E. would like to say a big THANK YOU to Jess (music therapist), Edwin (violinist), Desiree (and Daisy) from the Clay Room, Jane (LIFE Toronto) and Fatima (LIFE Mississauga) for joining our team, our guests from Engaging Possibilities and as always, the Conductive Education staff!

Thank You’s

The L.I.F.E. Toronto group has been hard at work writing a new song in Music Therapy. But unlike the previous L.I.F.E. Toronto songs, the group decided to take a different approach to songwriting this time. It all started when our music therapist, Jess (Music Therapy Trust of Canada), played the song Brave by Sara Bareilles during one of our music therapy jam sessions. The group loved the way this song sounded and decided to write new lyrics that would go with the existing melody of Brave. By the end of the session, we finished writing the new lyrics for the song, which we cleverly titled Please Don’t Tell Me I’m Brave. The name of the song is inspired by experiences that many participants have had where strangers approach them on the street and tell them they are “brave” just for living their lives. The group hopes that the new song will educate people to think before they speak and to treat everyone with respect. The L.I.F.E. Toronto group is excited to work on recording and creating a music video for the song in the next few sessions. Stay tuned for updates on our new song!
