Dear Sony Foundation supporters,

Welcome to the first issue of Shout for 2013. The year ahead is set to be one of the busiest, with a plethora of new events and exciting programs added to our calendar.

This year will see the opening of Australia’s first ever youth cancer centre at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth. The ‘You Can’ centre, funded by a $1.8 million donation from Sony Foundation and a $1.2 million contribution from the Australian Federal Government, will be a shining example of the future of specialised cancer care and a benchmark upon which more youth cancer centres can be built. It is an exciting time for the Foundation and I look forward to sharing news of the opening with you in the coming months.

Sony Foundation is also in the midst of launching a new bedside music program into hospitals around Australia. Operation: Acoustic has been trialling at Westmead Children’s Hospital for six months and has received hugely positive feedback. The program, which sees talented musicians donate their time and play music to hospital patients in a one-on-one setting, is preparing to be introduced into more

hospitals in Sydney as well as Brisbane and Melbourne.

A new and exciting event, Wheels4Ward, has also been added to the calendar for 2013. This luncheon will be held trackside at the state-of-the-art Sydney Motorsport Park and will allow Sony Foundation to introduce itself to a new motoring market and similarly introduce our partners to the race track. The event, to be held in July, will allow guests to have their own car collections on show in a concourse d’elegance and will also feature hot laps, skid pans and motoring legends. This is an event not to be missed!

On a final note, we understand that there have been, and are continuing to be trying economic times for businesses and individuals. We thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to Sony Foundation, ensuring that we can continue to deliver effective and successful programs and initiatives to support young Australians who need assistance.

Warm regards, Jim Dwyer OAM

It isn’t every day that an Italian football superstar decides to throw their support behind Sony Foundation’s ‘ You Can’ campaign but that’s exactly what happened earlier this year. Sydney FC’s star recruit Alessandro Del Piero hosted a dinner for 700 guests at Melbourne’s Crown Palladium with Sony Foundation as his chosen charity beneficiary.

The evening raised $35,000 for ‘You Can’ through a charity raffle and auction prizes. The money raised will go towards the New South Wales’ first youth cancer centre.

‘You Can’ advocate and avid soccer fan Jason Carrasco, 19, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer two years ago, spoke about his experience and brought many guests to tears. Jason told of his own battle with cancer as well as that of his best friend, Cass Nascimento, who has been fighting

brain cancer for several years.

“As people, we don’t get to choose how we are going to die, or when. We can only decide how we are going to live right now. Every day is a new chance to choose,” Jason said.

“Cass taught me how to choose to be a fighter. I believe I am standing here today because of her.”

Del Piero is a strong advocate for cancer research in Italy and Sony Foundation is very grateful for his support of our youth cancer cause. Thank you to Tribal Sports Management and Alessandro Del Piero for all of their support of ‘You Can’.

With Del Piero’s recent resigning to Sydney FC, Sony Foundation is looking forward to working with him again in the future.

2012 wrapped up another strong year for the Children’s Holiday Camp Program. Senior school students from more than 40 schools around Australia gave up their holidays to become the primary carers of children with special needs.

A Current Affair visited the St Ignatius Riverview Camp in December and put to air an amazing story, calling the piece “one of the feel-good stories of the year”. Channel Ten weather reporter Reuben Mourad, an ex-Riverview student, was the resident photographer at the Camp and also did a live weather cross from the school grounds, thanking Sony Foundation for their ongoing support of the program.

It was a particularly special year for the Knox and Abbotsleigh Camp as they received a visit from Sony Music artists Justice Crew, who put on an electrifying and highly energetic performance for the children and their companions. Congratulations must also go to PLC and Shore for hosting their first camp.

The Sony Foundation is committed to expanding the camps further to enable more young people to participate in this

life-changing program. In 2013, Sony Foundation will take the Holiday Camps Program into a total of 23 schools at a cost of nearly $300,000. This will ensure the camps remain free of charge for the children and their families. Our annual Golf Challenge, held on March 21, will raise money to make a dent in this sum.

The primary school students spent last year collecting old mobile phones as part of the You Can Schools Phone Recycling Campaign and won the national competition, collecting more phones than any other participating school. Despite having only 320 students at the NSW Central Coast school, Lisarow Public donated a whopping 921 phones.

The performance by Justice Crew was the winning prize for the students and they did not disappoint. They put on a stellar performance for all the students despite the sizzling heat. The students were up and dancing, waving their hands in the air and participating in a dance-off on stage.

The intimate performance was a reminder of how a small group of determined children can make a huge difference. It also marked the relaunch of the ‘You Can’ Schools Phone Recycling Campaign for 2013 and ensured the students were motivated to keep collecting!

The You Can Schools Phone Recycling Campaign has relaunched for 2013 with the help of British boy band,One Direction.

Harry, Niall, Louis, Zayn and Liam are encouraging Australian school students to collect and donate old mobile phones to support Sony Foundation’s youth cancer campaign, ‘You Can’.

Last year, more than 12,000 phones were collected throughout Australian schools and we are hoping to beat that figure in 2013. There are a few changes to the program this year, namely to the prize list and the requirements. Make sure you head to www.youcanschools.org.au to get all of the updated information.

AUSTRALIA’S FIRST YOUTH CANCER CENTRE NEARS COMPLETION The first ever cancer centre to provide specialised care and services to adolescents and young adults is nearly open in Perth. The ‘You Can Centre’, which will open on May 2, has been built with funds donated from Sony Foundation and the Australian Federal Government. The opening of the centre will be a very special time for the Foundation as we celebrate the huge amount of work that went into its construction and completion.

On their recent trip to Australia, One Direction recorded a video message to raise awareness around the You Can phone recycling campaign. Scan this QR code to watch it.

GOODna UPDatE

When flash flooding tore through Queensland this January, it was as if the devastating floods of 2011 were replaying all over again. People were left homeless, houses were swept away and communities were broken. Sony Foundation and the Salvation Army opened Soundpoint, the Goodna Youth and Community Centre, in October last year. It had taken more than a year to demolish the water-damaged site and build a brand new building. With services at the centre fully underway and running smoothly by the end of 2012, the idea of a second flood seemed like a cruel twist of fate. Yet, with relentless rain and rising waters, the centre was under threat by late January.

John Williams and his team from the Salvation Army removed Sony equipment, filing cabinets and

furniture from the Soundpoint building in preparation for the predicted floodwaters to hit Ipswich. However, in a fortunate turn of events, the water levels failed to eventuate and Soundpoint was converted to an evacuation centre for locals in need. Twelve families who had lost power were given food and shelter during the floods and a far greater number of people utilised the services, such as counselling, within the centre.

Despite only being open for a matter of months, Soundpoint has already proved itself to be a true community hub. This vision continues to be realised through the hard-working Salvation Army team who ensure the centre is reaching its potential.

DHL SET THE BAR HIGHThe New Year is now behind us and 2013 is well underway. It is the perfect time to think about how your company can become actively involved in the volunteering opportunities Sony Foundation has to offer.

Rainbow Corporate Partner DHL has got the year off to a roaring start, organising an entire month of volunteering for its staff. This new ‘Volunteering Month’ model means Sony Foundation can organise

all volunteering activities into one month. OPERATION: ACOUSTIC SET TO SPREAD ITS MAGIC

Operation: Acoustic is Sony Foundation’s new bedside

music program that delivers the healing power of music through

live acoustic entertainment for hospital patients. A Sony

Foundation initiative, its target beneficiary groups are

adolescents and teenagers, although the program is through its actions inclusive of all ward-

confined hospital patients.

Operation: Acoustic is not based on a large hospital performance model but rather an intimate connection that is established between the performer and the patient through the power of music. The sessions are one-on-one and are not designed to create a huge fuss in the wards.

Operation: Acoustic volunteers are emerging artists as well as established talent. Currently, the volunteers are from the Talent Development Project, a Sony Foundation supported program which engages the entertainment community to support emerging performers. Operation: Acoustic will band together the Australian

Sony companies under Sony Foundation to realise the initiative, bringing to life

the Sony brand promise, that anything you can imagine, you can make real.

Until now, the program has been trialling in Westmead Children’s Hospital with two volunteers visiting the hospital each fortnight. It has been implemented there over the past six months to hugely positive feedback.

Sony Foundation is in discussion with a number of hospitals who wish to host the Operation: Acoustic program. Next stops include Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick and Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne.

The Sydney Sixers played their hearts out for a good cause on Wednesday, January 9 when they took on the Melbourne Renegades in a match which raised money for the ‘You Can’ campaign.

Sony Foundation volunteers were out in force fundraising before and during the Big Bash League match, selling ‘You Can’ sweatbands to enthusiastic Sixers fans. Thousands of dollars were raised on the evening and a huge thank you must go to the incredibly supportive crowd.

‘You Can’ advocates Jess Olson and Jason Carrasco took the field prior to the game to do the coin toss, which was a huge honour. Jess and Jason were also able to speak to the crowd about their experience and why youth cancer centres and specialised services are so vital.

The Fox Sports commentators, match announcers and the Sixers themselves all made sure they had their sweatbands on for the good cause.

“Sony Foundation’s ‘You Can’ campaign is an incredibly important cause and one which the Sydney Sixers are incredibly proud to support,” said Sydney Sixers General Manager Stuart Clark.
