-1/3 of the 13+ own a smartphone and according to Mediametrie report (2008-2009)-11% of those smartphone owners listened to the radio through their mobiles during the previous month & 6.9% during the last 7 days.

• August 2009 : Radio France launched 8 mobile applications (one by channel +portal) for iPhones, Ipod touch & Windows mobile (+PC/Mac desktop).

• March 2010 : launch of the Androïd version & Blackberry (RIM)

• Access to the live feed, to more than 300 podcasts, the news and data (guests names, record sleeves, biography, tnews topics...)

• France Bleu (41 local stations) with a location-based feature.

• Radio France is the unique media in Europe to supply users/listeners with this kind of geolocation functionality for applications. A mobile’s signal may be picked up by three or more cell towers, enabling the Global Positioning System (GPS)–GSM/Wifi feature-based “triangulation” to work on.

What for ?

• Target : 2 million downloads by the end of the year

• Several updates planned in 2010 with new functionnalities

• Development on new platform like Samsung bada and potential adaptation to new environments like i-Pad or connected TV’s.

• Launching apps was useful to structure the company in term of data

information crop and helpful to improve our enhanced radio strategy.

• Enables Radio France to develop widgets on other kinds of plateforms like facebook or windows media center.

What next ?

• Radio broadcasters do not control anymore digital contents on widgets vs terrestrial broadcast. What about quality flow ?

• Potential Costs boost if Digital Radio listening on mobile phones continues to increase… Who should pay ? both users & radio broadcasters ?

• If no 4G (LTE) (and Will technical changes compensate for mobile broadband saturation risks ?) in the next coming years, real network saturation risk.
