YORKVILLE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH HAS “SUPER” SUMMER!!
By Barb Thurlby, CE Director
Our Summer Kids Church program was simply “super”! We were fortunate to have an outstanding group of volunteers that embraced our summer superhero theme and pulled off a stellar program
for children and adults alike.
Students from Kids Church learned important Christian values from our ‘Superheroes’ in a fun and interactive way. The curriculum emphasized Loving your parents; Be slow to speak; Do good; Know your power source; Use your gifts; Practice Teamwork; and Do small acts of kindness. The children
had a blast in this energetic and surprise filled program.
A special thank you to our ‘Superheroes’ – Chris Skinner, Matt Strausberger, Alex Skinner, Lauren Vaclavik, Kevin Vaclavik, and Trevor Farbisz. You were great sports and the students,
as well as the adults, enjoyed the journey. Lastly, a “SUPER’ thank you to Joe Duran for leading the program each week in a way that only Joe can do! You were fabulous!
A friend of mine recently returned a book he had borrowed – If Grace is True, by Gulley & Mulholland. It’s one of my favorite books about one of my favorite subjects, God’s grace. Maybe I love the concept of grace because I would be lost without it, I would be someone other than who I am, if grace was not true. Since getting the book back, I have been thinking a lot about grace, and started looking for devotions on grace that I could use to begin each day of September.
I ran across this one, that I want to share with you, because it really got me thinking about the role we have in grace. I may use it for the whole month. May it speak to you, as it did to me.
Two-Dimentional Grace By Charles Swindoll
Grace comes to us in two dimensions, vertical and horizontal. Vertical grace centers on our relationship with God. It’s amazing. It frees us from the demands and condemnation of the Mosaic Law. It announces hope to the sinner—the gift of eternal life, along with all its benefits.
Horizontal grace centers on our human relationships. It is charming. It frees us from the tyranny of pleasing people and adjusting our lives to the demands and expectations of human opinion. It gives relief—the enjoyment of freedom along with all its benefits. It silences needless guilt and removes self-imposed shame.
Few people realize better than non-Christians how guilt-ridden many Christians are. A lady in our congregation tells of a conversation she had with a fellow student while the two of them were students at the University of California Berkeley. He knew she was a Christian, and he made it painfully clear that he had no interest whatsoever in her faith. When she asked why, his answer bore the sting of reality: "Because the most guilt-ridden people I know are Christians. No thanks."
So take a moment, and think about your answer to these two probing questions:
1) Do you add to others' guilt or do you lessen it?
2) Are you the type of person who promotes another's liberty or restrains it?
Both questions have to do with attitude, don't they? We do what we do with others because of the way we think. Our attitude, therefore, is crucial. It is also at our mercy. We have full control of which attitude we will have: charming and gracious or restrictive and rigid. Liberty or legalism will be the result. Depending on our attitude, we will either be grace givers or grace killers.
With love in Christ,
Pastor Mark

September, the month we start saying goodbye to hot summer days, send our children back to school, and bring out light weight jackets and long pants. I think this summer went by in a blink of an eye and am truly amazed that we’re heading towards the end of another year. I hope that your summer was filled with fun, excitement and relaxation. And I also hope that those who attended the Annual Church Picnic enjoyed a fabulous time of fellowship with friends and family.
The board is continuing to work on meeting the challenges of completing several major projects that require capital funding such as replacing the roof, projector system, fixing the parking lot and replacing our church signage at the corner of our property. We are still finalizing costs and investigating ways to fund these much needed improvements. We are targeting making decisions and recommendations in the next few weeks and will keep you informed as progress is made on these issues.
I know financial issues are not easy to deal with on many levels, but they are a fact of life. We are faced with the ongoing issue of expenses exceeding income and a lack of funds for capital improvements. But in the meantime, on behalf of the entire board, I thank you for the generosity you have shown over several months by donating money for the tagged items on the Giving Tree. It only took two weeks to collect $1,300 which will be used to replace a window and buy paint for the west side of the building. We have been truly blessed with your love for this church.
Another way to close our gap between operating expenses and income is to increase your personal giving by just 10%. If you give $10, can you possibly give $11? If you can make the 10% increase, we could close the gap in operating funds in a very short period of time. Something for everyone to at least pray about and consider doing,
September is a busy month in the life of our church. Sunday school resumes, spaghetti dinners resume, both children’s and adult choirs begin practicing and the annual fall rummage and bake sale will be held. This is a great opportunity for everyone to think about volunteering to help out as a Sunday school teacher, help prepare the spaghetti dinners, lift up your voice by joining the choir, or help with the rummage and bake sale. The gift of your time and talents are also much needed and appreciated. And don’t forget we still have an opening on the leadership board for Christian Education: Adult shepherd.
May the blessings of God’s love be with you as we move towards the beauty of the fall months.
Sandy deRidder Chairperson

Building and Grounds Mary Ellen Anderson Office Hours Tuesday – Thursday 8:00 am – 2:30 pm 630-674-4345 [email protected]
We are close to making our recommendation to the SLT on the church roof. This process has taken longer than we first thought. The more we investigated the more we learned what we needed to do to bring our roof up to standard. Most importantly we learned from talking to Bob Lee who had helped with the original installation that all the electrical lines ran on the roof. We also discovered that there was no ventilation of the roof. We knew that the new roof would require correcting this problem. Last, we learned that we would need to remove the skylights because the new roof design would be higher. The skylights are in bad shape and we were afraid they would shatter if removed. We now have a price for replacing the skylights.
We had a workday to clean up the area behind the garage and to do some serious weeding. The DeFuss family took the pavers which was a huge help. We wish them well on their project. We had nine men, Jeff, Bill, Jerry, Pastor Mark, Andy, Ron, Art and Tony (Ben not in the group photo) that came to the Saturday workday and they filled the dumpster. Below are a few pictures taken that morning. We also want to thank Laurie Strong for weeding the corner sign area.

Love Your
Neighbor
Dear members and friends of Yorkville Congregational UCC,
The director and staff in the World Relief ESL program extend a BIG THANK YOU to you for your generous gifts of school supplies for their students.
Adult students in four classes will use the spiral notebooks, pencils and erasers, pens, sticky notes, scissors, index cards, and regular markers, highlighters, glue and plastic bags. Teachers will appreciate the drink cups and will definitely use the dry erase markers.
The children in the daycare and preschool groups will enjoy the crayons, colored pencils, water color paint, and glue sticks when they work on their “projects” and during unstructured playful learning.
Your generosity is awesome!

October 20th November 17th December 15th.
STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS
1 Cor. 4:1-7 People should think of us as …. stewards entrusted with the mysteries of God…each one should be found trustworthy.
John 1:15-18 Indeed, from his fullness we have, all of us received – one gift replacing another.
Coming soon is the annual Fall Bake Sale. Circle this date on your calendar -
Thursday, September 19th
– bring bake goods to church for the bake sale.
Plan to drop off your bake good donations any time on Thursday, September 19th
from 8:30 am – 7:00 pm. We will have containers, plates, gift bags and
ribbons ready for your donations.
Shoppers from the Rummage Sale look forward to purchasing several delicious, home-made items from our bake sale. Please plan to bake something delicious and help us to
have another successful bake sale.
Proceeds from the bake sale are given to our Christian Education Ministry. In the past, they have used the proceeds to purchase pumpkins for the Fall Festival which is open to the whole community, fleece material to make blankets to be given to children at Central DuPage Hospital and they gave a cash donation to “The Santa Shop of Christmas Toys”
for the Food Pantry.
The sale cannot be successful without YOUR generous donations of homemade treats. Please look through your cookbooks, check out Pinterest or bring in a family favorite
goodie. With your support, we can have another profitable bake sale!

YORKVILLE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH ATTENDS CHAMBER NEW TEACHER BREAKFAST
By Barb Thurlby, CE Director
For the second year in a row, Yorkville Congregational Church participated in the Yorkville Chamber ‘New Teacher’ Breakfast. Each year the Chamber hosts a breakfast to welcome new teachers to the Yorkville School District 115. This is a great opportunity to engage in community and to take a moment to welcome new teachers to the area.
YCC member Deanna Bazan served as our ambassador at the breakfast and welcomed a new incoming teacher. YCC also sponsored a centerpiece for the event. Yorkville Congregational Church was the only church to participate! Thank you, Deanna, for attending and thank you to the SLT board for supporting this special event.
REEL PEOPLE
The Wife
After nearly forty years of marriage, JOAN and JOE
CASTLEMAN (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) are
complements. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where
Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his
very public role as Great American Novelist, Joan pours her
considerable intellect, grace, charm, and diplomacy into the private role of Great
Man's Wife. Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work. Joe's
literary star has blazed since he and Joan first met in the late 1950. THE WIFE interweaves the story of the
couple's youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a marriage, thirty-plus years later--a lifetime's shared
compromises, secrets, betrayals, and mutual love.
