Introduction to Aluminium
In just 100 years, aluminium has advanced from being ararely used metal to the second largest metal used worldwide. The characteristics and properties which have brought about this dramatic increase in the use of aluminium are its lightweight, high strength, resistance to weathering, ease of forming, the ability to be treated in a variety of finishes, and finally its recyclability.
Aluminium is used in building and construction to cover a wide spectrum of different applications including prestigious buildingswhere aluminium windows and preformed sheet cladding featurespredominate, replacement windows, shop fronts and shutters, doors, canopies, architectural hardware and fittings, rain water goods andmany other applications.
Alloy Properties and FormsThe aluminium cast and wrought alloys commonly used in building –alloys with additions of magnesium (LM5, 5083, 5251), manganese(3103), silicon (LM6) or a combination of magnesium and silicon(LM25, 6063, 6082), all possess great durability with a high resistanceto atmospheric attack, both in industrial and marine environments.
By selecting the right alloy the designer is offered a wide range ofproperties including high strength – up to 400 MPa, low density – one third that of steel, high thermal conductivity and good formingand joining characteristics. These alloys are used in the building andconstruction industry in the form of rolled products and extrusions, castings forging – the extrusion process deserving particular mentionsince it is a unique method of shaping aluminium, offering the designer a vast range of extruded profiles, and almost limitless design possibilities.
Finishing AluminiumWhilst aluminium and its alloys are strong and durable with a natural ability to form a protective oxide layer when exposed to theatmosphere, decorative finishes are often required. These can beproduced either by anodising, where natural or coloured oxide films are available, or by coatings using powder, wet spray or electrophoretic techniques. A wide range of colours are availablewhich are durable, fade free and widely used in architecture.

55HXTM 5005 A/Q H14 Anodised Sheets
Markets and ApplicationsIn the UK, over 150,000 tonnes of aluminium are used by the building and construction industry each year, a large proportion of which is in the form of extruded androlled products.
Amongst the many other applications for aluminiumextrusions in building are:1. Roofing and exterior cladding2. Curtain walling and structural glazing3. Prefabricated buildings, greenhouses
and conservatories4. Public works machinery and equipment5. Scaffolding and ladders6. Architectural hardware7. Heating and ventilation8. Shopfronts and roller shutters9. Partitions and signs
Product Description55HXTM is specifically adapted to meet today’s requirements for modern interior decorating and exterior architecture. Thanks to itscomposition, 55HXTM is particularly suitable for decorative anodising.Making it the perfect material for easy working and allowing architectsand designers to create any style or object with a unique finishingtouch and exclusive look. The ultimate aim is to combine functionalefficiency with stylish design based on quality and durability.
ApplicationsBesides exterior architecture, 55HXTM is also used for many possibleapplications in interior design. Door panelling, kitchen and electricalappliances, furniture and lighting elements often owe their stylishappearance to this metal finish. For all of these applications 55HXTM
is available with a mill finish or as a preanodised version.
Quality55HXTM has an outstanding colour uniformity an excellent surface andis very ductile. For many applications, a uniform colour is the key criterion of good anodising quality. In addition, both hot and coldrolling are performed in special production runs with specific processparameters. This is why an increasing number of customers are optingfor this material, both for interior and external applications.
AnodisingWith its cool and functional appeal, anodised aluminium is right in linewith latest design trends and thus provides a better alternative forpainted materials. In addition, a professionally applied anodised layerin a natural shade is not only extremely resistant to weathering andcorrosion but also to UV rays, unlike most paintwork. Today we canguarantee a uniform colour for different batches with difficult widthsand thicknesses so that the contractor, and ultimately the customer, can confidently opt for anodised aluminium.
