Like many Canadian investors, you are likely asking “What is happening in today’s markets”? With all the noise in the media about the price of oil, Europe, Asia and interest rates in North America, among many other factors, it can be difficult to determine who to listen to and how to react.

The good news is that this is nothing new. We have seen many different events affect the markets in the past; downturns are a normal part of investment history. When we take into account the last 65 years, markets historically rise and fall and then recover to a better position than they were at before. This gives the patient investor the opportunity to realize even greater gains.

Making regular contributions to your investments allows you to take advantage of the market’s volatility (a.k.a Dollar Cost Averaging) and avoid “timing the market”. We do not have a crystal ball to predict exactly when the market will rise and fall. By making monthly contributions you can reduce the risk of buying high and selling low. If you are in the stage of life where you are drawing on your investments, make withdrawals from your investments on a monthly basis instead of an annual payment.

Ensure that your portfolio includes a mixture of asset classes: stocks, bonds and money market instruments. Look to include different geographic locations, market sectors and investment styles that suit your specific risk tolerance, investment objectives and time frame. No two investors are the same. Diversification is an ongoing process that should be reviewed on a regular basis.

Keep in mind that investments are a long term relationship. All portfolios will need adjustments from time to time. Make deliberate changes with a long term perspective. Wealth is accumulated over time, not overnight.

Take advantage of volatility Diversification Act, don’t react

When markets are down and you have concerns, give us a call. Together we can review information to help you understand the current situation and discuss your portfolio to ensure you are properly positioned for the existing market landscape.

Let us sit down and look at your original investment objectives to make sure you are on track, or update your goals if they have changed. If you have other investments elsewhere, bring in your statements. We can take a look at your entire financial picture and make sure you are headed in the right direction.

Building a solid foundation with a trusted advisor is important to your success. Having an advisor to review your investments on a regular basis and support you through the market’s volatility puts you in the best position to accumulate wealth.
