This year, we are expanding our focus to voice our support of the Black Lives Matter movement, and are calling it Solidarity Day. We do this in respect to the current climate highlighting historic harm done to Black people, and the responsibility to adjust language, ideas, and actions that are appropriate and reflect the voices of those most impacted by oppressive systems and behaviors. This day is a chance for us to come together as a community and reflect on the following pledge: I believe that all students, regardless of race, sexual orientation or gender identity/expression deserve to feel safe and supported, and that Black lives matter. That means I pledge to: Try to listen to perspectives and experiences that differ from my own, and to keep an open mind. Not use racist, or anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) language or slurs. Intervene, if I safely can, in situations where students are being harassed or tell an adult. Support efforts to end bullying and harassment. Encourage others to be Allies. Since this is a unique year and we need to hold events like this in a safe manner, instead of our usual sign in the cafeteria during break periods, we will instead have a digital pledge to sign which we will send out to students and staff that morning. All community members may sign the pledge digitally to show their support. We will have pins available on a table in the Alexander lobby if you wish to take one. We will also have a new Rainbow Peace Flag on display in the cafeteria courtesy of Ms. Kwedor! If you are interested in the meaning of the flag, take a look next to it and read Ms. Kwedor’s write-up. We will also send the explanation out via email. Showing your support on this day is completely voluntary.
