Your Guide to SENTINEL

Modern Challenges

Improvements in lifestyle and advancements in medical

science mean that we are living longer. Longevity poses a

significant financial challenge, as we have to accumulate

sufficient wealth to provide for a prolonged period of

retirement.

Lifestyle Goals

When considering SENTINEL, it is vital to do so in the

context of your financial objectives. Put another way,

consider how SENTINEL will help you achieve what is

important to you and the lifestyle you want in the future.

Lifestyle goals can be very diverse and can be simple such

as wanting to have money to fund holidays or could be

more significant, allowing you to emigrate to be closer to

your family. For others funding education for their children

and/ or grandchildren may be the primary motivation.

Where commitments are based in a foreign currency, it is

prudent to make provision in that currency thus mitigating

currency fluctuations.

Purpose

SENTINEL is designed to provide a distinct environment in

which to build and safeguard wealth. Benefits can be paid

anywhere in the world providing income and/ or capital to

meet your financial needs.

Description

SENTINEL is a Preservation Fund written under the Trusts

(Guernsey) Law 2007. Overseas Trust and Pension Limited

(“OTAP”) is the Trustee and Administrator and operates

SENTINEL in accordance with the Deed and Rules.

It is important that you discuss your circumstances,

attitudes and objectives with your professional adviser.

if SENTINEL is appropriate for you and advise you on a

suitable investment strategy. Your professional adviser will

also provide ongoing reviews on the suitability of SENTINEL.

investment strategy and will review the investment

performance with you at regular intervals.

type of SENTINEL that you hold:

Access – A wide range of investment funds held on the

OTAP Investment Platform

an Offshore Investment Bond

Advanced Plus – For clients who need the widest investment

choice and flexibility

Investments can be held in a range of major World currencies.

Protection

Contributions to SENTINEL are the property of the plan

which is domiciled in Guernsey. This may provide protection

from events such as political or commercial risk and help

safeguard your wealth.

Selected benefit date

SENTINEL is designed to provide supplementary income

and or capital, therefore it offers a flexible approach to the

provision of benefits. This means you can select any age or

date to commence benefits.

However, if you reach your selected benefit date but have

no need for the funds in your plan, you can defer benefits

indefinitely.

Should your circumstances change prior to your selected

benefit date you can request the trustees to consider an

earlier benefit payment.

Benefit Payments

Benefit payments can be made in one of three ways.

Full Lump Sum Benefit: The full value of the plan is paid

to the member and the plan ceases.

Part Lump Sum Benefit: Part of the value of the plan is

paid to the member and the plan continues. For example,

a plan valued at £100,000, could pay a benefit of £20,000

and the residual funds of £80,000 remain in the plan and

can be drawn on again as required in the future.

Income payments: Regular drawdown and annuities can

be paid from the plan. Different types of annuities are

available including temporary or short-term annuities and

lifetime annuities. Your financial adviser will be able to

guide you on the best option.

Benefits can be requested by completing the appropriate

form available on our website.

Death Benefit

Upon your death, the plan’s assets can be paid to your

nominated beneficiary(ies). Beneficiaries can include

individuals, a trust or even a retirement plan.

Benefit Vesting and its Implications

The assets held in the plan, belong to the plan until either

you request a benefit payment or upon your death. When

a benefit payment is declared, the value of the declared

benefit vests in you. The unvested portion of the fund i.e.

the remainder of the plan stays protected as it is not legally

part of your estate.

Death is deemed to be a vesting event and as such, the

value of the plan forms part of your estate for the purpose

of estate duty calculation. The remaining proceeds are

distributed by the Trustees and not via your estate.

Succession and Probate

This is a complex area of financial planning, particularly

where foreign assets are held in your own name.

SENTINEL protects the assets from foreign: succession

rules, probate, wills and potential tax associated with

death. This means that value of the plan will be available

to your dependents or beneficiaries within a short period

of time.

Taxation

SENTINEL is domiciled in Guernsey. The plan is not subject

to local tax in Guernsey on income or capital gains tax

within the plan nor on benefits paid from the plan to

non-Guernsey residents. As such, you only need to

consider tax in the country in which you are tax resident.

We strongly recommend that you speak to a professional

adviser in the country that you reside to confirm the tax

position of SENTINEL in your country.

Pricing

Please refer to our fee schedules for Access, Advanced and

Advanced Plus options. You should also consider the fees

associated with any underlying investments used within

the plan.

Note

Although SENTINEL is a preservation fund we do not

guarantee the value of your plan. The value of the plan and

the investments held within it may go up or down in value

and you may not get back the amount contributed to

the plan.
