1970 to 1980 – the Dream…SnowballS! Inspired by the Montreal Olympic Games in 1970, two jour-nalists set out to find a mountain with impressive vertical. Soon they begin to entertain the idea of starting up a ski area in Petite-Rivière-Saint-François.

in 1980, a pair of young aficionados launch Projet Boule de Neige – the Snowball Project – that leads to the construc-tion of a summit chalet. With advance reservations, skiers are either towed to the summit by snowmobile or taxied up in an 8-passenger vehicle. That same year, la Société de développement du Massif is officially created.

1980 to 1990 – riDing uP the mountain…by buS!in 1982, the ski area boasts five ungroomed trails buried in powder. Skiers ride to the summit by school bus, with a team of guides accompanying them on their 4 or 5 runs per day.

Between 1982 and 1991, skier visits increase from 800 to 10,000. In 1988, the Charlevoix is granted UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve status.

1991 to 2000 – WinDoW on the WorlDIn April 1991, a $10 million grant is awarded to la Société de développement du Massif, with the obligation of raising one million dollars at the community level. To achieve this, a regional fundraising campaign is held that reimburses contributors in lift tickets. Mission accomplished…

A year later, the construction of an access road, parking area and four buildings including a chalet is undertaken at the base of the mountain. Le Massif replaces its buses with two lifts, installs a new snowmaking system and adds three trails to its skiable terrain.

2000 to 2001 – a $25m investmentThe Olympic dream hinted at in the early 70s resurfaces. Thanks to provincial and federal government contributions, la Société de développement announces a $24.8M project towards the creation of a National Alpine Downhill Training Centre for elite skiers, a new summit road to a new moun-taintop chalet, a reservoir to supply a new snowmaking system, a high-speed detachable quad lift with mid-station along with 16 new trails and glades.

2002 – Daniel gauthier: le massif’s neW torchbearerIn September 2002 Daniel Gauthier – former founding presi-dent of Cirque du Soleil – takes up the torch by acquiring Le Massif. His first mountain investment totals $5 million and is visible by December 2004. It includes a new high-speed quad toboost lift capacity, 90 additional snowguns to maximize snow coverage and six new trails and glades to further enhance the skiable terrain.

2006 to 2009 – major investments for Passionate sliDe fansFrom 2006 to 2009, Le Massif keeps its promise to passio-nate slide sports fans. It adds 6 new glades, 34 acres of off-trail skiing and 160 new air|water snowguns to maximize early season coverage in its Camp-Boule and Grande-Pointe Express sectors.

2009 until toDay – evolving into a four-season Destination Evolving into a four-season destination A number of development projects have been undertaken over the past few years. A 30% expansion of the skiable terrain, new lift infrastructures, the creation of the Donald Bouchard Beginner Area for novices, the completion of a 7.5 km family sled run, the construction of a railway station and implementation of a Light Rail Transit linking Hôtel La Ferme to the Mountain. This is just the beginning - the adventure continues!
