My Number of New Year’s Resolutions for 2018: Zero

Here we are again, at the beginning of January and feeling completely compelled to find ways to better ourselves, to find the best “us” possible. While there certainly isn’t anything wrong with exploring ways to become better people, both mentally and physically, based on prior experience I have found one of two things to usually be true - either I make so many resolutions that I can’t possibly keep track of them all or, if I’ve made only a couple, after a week I find myself eating chocolate again, not exercising at all, and/or buying that pair of shoes I simply could not live without!

After some reflection on why I am so dreadfully unsuccessful at keeping my New Year’s resolutions, I decided the only way to improve was to read as much as I could on the topic. So I took a trip to, yep, you guessed it, the Library.

At the Library I first browsed the catalogue for books about making and keeping resolutions and found 2,231 books to choose from with 1,774 of those

being e-books, available through the Overdrive or Hoopla apps, that I could download to my mobile device. I then decided to look within our databases by searching Academic Search Premier, MasterFILE Premier, and the Ohio Web Library where I found a total of 13,923 magazine and journal articles on New Year’s resolutions. I also used our online chat service through our website, muskingumlibrary.org, and spoke with a few of our outstanding Reference Librarians. Oh, and I should also mention that in order to keep my spirits up, I used Freegal, another fantastic Library app, to stream holiday music while I was reading and searching.

My Library research changed my way of thinking. It led me to believe that I could in fact make and keep resolutions and that my previous attempts had been doomed to fail from the get go. They had been too big and unrealistic. When making them in the past, I think I may have been a little overconfident and too optimistic as well. I’m changing from zero resolutions to three.

So, for 2018, I’m going to whittle them down, better define them, and declare the following:

1. I am going to allow myself two small pieces of chocolate a day instead of never eating chocolate again2. Exercise by walking in my neighborhood three times a week instead of every single day3. Create a budget that allows for personal extras a few times a year (like those irresistibly perfect shoes!)

Your Muskingum County Library System is the place to go for reading, learning, and creating. It provides a place for continuous discovery and new experiences - all for FREE! If you don’t have a library card, I encourage you to visit us at muskingumlibrary.org to apply online or to stop by any of our six locations around Muskingum County.

Here’s Wishing You and Yours a Very Happy New Year!
