We have decided to put this boat to good use by filling it with food, cleaning supplies, even cat or dog food to be given to the Food Pantry. From August 1 st through September 15th , let’s see if we can gather enough items to fill the boat and that will require a pick up to deliver the food. FILL THE BOAT

You might notice we have a boat in our entry. No, this is not left from the recent high water, but from

Vacation Bible School. We have decided to put this boat to good use by filling it with food, cleaning

supplies, even cat or dog food to be given to the Food Pantry. Giving is often down when people are

gone on vacation or very busy with summer activities. Instead of waiting for winter, let’s help fill the

pantry now. From August 1st through September 15th, let’s see if we can gather enough items to fill the

boat and that will require a pick up to deliver the food. For those who want something easier to

manage, money is always needed and appreciated. The Food Pantry can use money to buy meat and

perishable items that can’t be stored. Money can be given by using the offering envelopes marked food

pantry by the boat. Let’s fill this boat!

THERE IS STILL TIME TO SIGN UP!

GET READY TO SERVE!

On Sunday, Sept 7, 2014, ELCA Congregations will be putting their faith into action by serving their

communities in ways that share the love of God with all of God’s people.

GLC will join hands with members from Zion, New Era, and Shepherd of the Cross in a combined community

service project to obtain needed supplies for MCSA.

Volunteers can sign up for 1-hour durations at http://doodle.com/4fh2irk8zzk7v2c6 or call the church office

263-5680 and we will sign you up. We are asking for two volunteers per 1-hour shift at either Wal-Mart, Hy-

Vee or Dollar General. The times are 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Minimal physical exertion is required! Your duties would be to monitor the MCSA COLLECTION

DAY table by distributing business-card-size shopping lists to incoming shoppers, accepting and thanking them

for their donations, and placing them in the collection bins – all of which will be provided. You may want to

bring a lawn chair and wear your GLC T-shirt. Name tags will be provided for GLC volunteers without T-

shirts. We are asking that you stay at your collection point until the next person comes for your shift. Walmart

and Hy-Vee both have 2 doors; you are not assigned a specific door, so you will need to coordinate that with the

others who arrive for your shift.

Please contact JoAnne Fisher (563-260-2851 or [email protected]) or Kim Thompson

(563-264-0847 or [email protected]) if you have any questions.

Read more about it at http://www.elca.org/dayofservice.

Music Notes for September 2014

Hello Dear GLC Community, Well, another summer has come and gone and our music ministry here at GLC is starting what promises to be an exciting year of making a “joyful noise unto the Lord.” Is it time for you to bring your musical gifts and

talents out of the closet (or the shower)? Please prayerfully consider participating in one of our music ensembles here at Grace. Bell Choir- the GLC Bell Choir meets and plays on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month. We meet from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. and play a piece at the Amazing Grace (10:45) service. We are especially looking for persons with some knowledge of music notation who would be willing to “come off the bench” from time to time to cover a pair of bells. Grace Singers- the Grace Singers meets each Wednesday evening from 6:30-7:30 p.m. We sing each Sunday alternating between the Amazing Grace (10:45) service and the Abundant Life (8:15) service. The Grace Singers prepare and present a Cantata each year for Easter. The Senior Choir is open to all from high school age to, shall we say, more mature singers Youth Choir- the GLC Youth Choir meets each Sunday afternoon from 4:00-4:30 p.m. and is open to youth in grades 5 through 8. We sing at one of the services at least every other month and sing a variety of music from classical rounds to contemporary pieces. Instrumentalists- if you play an instrument (wind, string, piano) there are always opportunities to offer special music selections throughout the year. Don’t worry about the music being too hard; I will pick and arrange a

piece that will be just right Hey, you former band members, this would be a great chance to dust off your instrument that has been in the closet all those years. Contact Bob if you are interested in playing. GLC Wind Ensemble- the GLC Wind Ensemble meets regularly during the year and is always featured as part of our Christmas and Easter celebrations as well as other times throughout the church year. This ensemble is open to wind players from 6th grade through adult. We usually meet a couple times each month after the 10:45 service. Contact Bob Romza for more details on any of the musical ministry opportunities.

Hymn of the Month for September 2014

The Hymn of the Month for September is “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise” which is #834 in the

Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymnal (the red hymnal). The tune for this hymn is “St. Denio” which first

appeared in its current form in the 1839 Welsh hymnal Hymns of the Sanctuary. The tune likely had an earlier

life as a Welsh folk song. The text is by Walter Chalmers Smith (1824-1908) and appeared in his Hymns of

Christ and the Christian Life, which was published in 1867. The tune and text were first paired together by

Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) for the English Hymnal (1906).

Social Ministry Board Meeting

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

Attendees: Kim Thompson, Karen Hessel, Paul Wilts

Absent: Vicki Lawhead

Activities Report Loaves & Fishes – next date is October 18, 2014 Food Pantry

Fill the Boat – Karen has articles prepared for Grace Notes and Grace Notes PS. Decided we needed to set a table inside the boat to start gathering items, have a more prominent spot for monetary donations, elevate the sign, and more readily draw members’ attention to the effort. Next effort – potential for something around Thanksgiving. With everything else going on at Christmas, we’d like to avoid that timeframe.

Crop Walk date – this is usually the first Sunday in October, which would be Oct. 5 this year. Paul will find out. GLC Ministry of Literacy – The afterschool reading program will begin Tuesday, September 9th. As we welcome back 6 students entering 2nd grade, we will miss our 2nd graders who are moving on to 3rd grade. We are working with the principal, Diane Campbell, and McKinley teachers to let parents know about our program as we recruit new 1st graders. The school district will bus the students to our program again this year. This amazing program would not happen if it were not for all your support through time, supplies, snacks and monetary contributions. Thank you! Program Updates/concerns - 1st graders read 25 books, 2nd graders read 11 Children practiced scripts for Reader's Theater along with books. (Repetitive reading improves reading fluency.) Bible story shared was "Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors." We need VOLUNTEERS! It is an awesome experience. You can volunteer frequently or once

in awhile, whatever works with your schedule. The time requirement is 1 1/2 to 2 hours just

once a month or more if you would like. Contact Deb Holliday at 264-1128.

Snack donations. The signup sheet is in the hall across from Judy's office.

School supplies for 2015. Due to the huge success of the backpacks this year we would like

to give backpacks again next year. Since stores have sales right now and they offer a wide

variety of items, we are starting a collection of materials for 2015. The lists of supplies can be

found on Judy's door and in the tub in the Social Hall. Supplies will be collected through the

month of September.

Registration for new students (6 students returning)-September 4th 4:30 to 5:30 in Lounge Marlene Graves of Tree of Knowledge donated 12 new books to distribute . Books will be given to new students at registration and at the 1st session for returning students.

Follow Up Items Autistic Children program – Paul – this was a Boy Scout Eagle project at Christina’s church. There is still a lot of information that needs to be gathered, but before we go too far down the information gathering path, we need to find out if we could have a classroom committed to this effort on Sunday mornings. Graceful Living Opportunity – Would like to add volunteers for the Literacy program for September.

Items to add? Homebound Ministries – Gertrude Gallagher had expressed interest through the GLO slips. Need to find out if a list exists. God’s Work, Our Hands – This is a joint effort between Grace, Shepherd of the Cross, Zion, and New Era churches on Sunday, September 7. Collection points will be set up at HyVee,

Page 7: A monthly publication of Grace Lutheran Church Worship Times Notes/Grace Notes Sept 2014.pdf · 2019-11-01 · A monthly publication of Grace Lutheran Church G race N otes September

WalMart, and Dollar General to gather hygiene items to be donated to MCSA. Church members can sign up for available shifts to man the collection points. Organization of effort is still in process and JoAnne Fisher is coordinating Grace’s efforts. Additional Items – The October meeting date will be moved ahead a week to September 30 as Kim is not available on 10/7.

manufacturer. The drain in the women’s restroom was continuously clogging. Al poured Drano down it and

seems to be working better.

September 2014, LSI Bulletin/Newsletter Article and Story

Direct Support Professionals Week

Do you know someone who is a caregiver to a loved one? It is often both a demanding and meaningful role. At

LSI, nearly half of our staff statewide serve in a direct care role, whether it’s providing support or respite to a

person with an intellectual disability or providing care for the children and youth who live on our Beloit and

Bremwood residential treatment campuses.

During September’s National Direct Support Professionals Week, we celebrate all the ways in which these

professionals help children and adults achieve their goals and build meaningful lives. Sometimes that means

helping an adult with a disability live on his own for the first time. Other times it means helping a child who was

sexually abused have a safe, caring environment in which to heal. Your prayers and support of LSI open up so

many new possibilities for children, families and adults!

LSI is proud to be an affiliated social ministry organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

(ELCA). Learn more at www.LSIowa.org and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa.

“LSI is a lifesaver”

Just going grocery shopping used to be a difficult task for Scott, who has autism. However, today Scott’s future is full of new possibilities.

The changes, said Scott’s mom Karen, are partly because LSI took the time to know her son.

“LSI has done a great job just getting to know Scott and understanding him,” Karen said. “They’ve just done phenomenal things with him. The staff all treat him like their own. The doors are just opening up right and left for him. We’ve seen him do things we never thought he would be able to do.”

Scott’s family can now spend more time with him in the community.

“Before it was hard to take him along to do things for fear of not knowing what would happen,” she said. “Now it’s just ‘C’mon, Scott, let’s go!”

“LSI is a lifesaver,” Karen added. “I don’t know what I’d do without them. It’s been wonderful. Scott has grown as an individual, and we just can’t thank people enough.”

As Scott grows, Karen said her ultimate goal for Scott remains the same.

“I just want to see him as independent and happy as he can be,” she said. “Nothing makes you happier than to see a smile on his face.”

Does Money Matter?

Recently in an article by Ann Friztschel and Steve Oelschlager, in the August 2014 Lutheran, the authors talk about the unity of heart, mind, soul in how disciples live stewardship. Excerpts from the article:

Sadly. For many stewardship means raising money for the church. In the Bible, a steward is the manager of another person’s property. This definition can make stewardship sound like a job where we are employed by the owner. But it’s really a fundamental aspect of Christian discipleship, involving holistically how we live and how we give. Stewardship is a response of gratitude and thanksgiving for what God has done for us and the world in Jesus Christ. Stewardship is strongly anchored in what it means to be a disciple. Disciples are called to love God with all their heart, mind, soul and strength, and to love their neighbors as themselves. Stewards are called to be generous toward God with all their heart, mind, soul, strength-through their time, talents, and treasures- to be generous to their neighbors and themselves. Think about how love and generosity are interconnected. Is it possible to love and not be generous, or to be generous but not to have love? Certainly God exhibits both intense love and generosity through God’s gracious presence in creation. God so loved the world that he gave…..(john 3:16). Stewards act out of love through generosity, and in the process grow in their identity as disciples. The job description of a disciple is a little more abstract, focusing on love, hearts, and soul. Financial stewardship is a way of life, a way of discipleship that allows more grateful, thankful, generous, loving and hopeful people. Why have we limited it to church fundraising? What gets in the way of us acting out in love in through generosity? The life of a disciple and steward is not a low energy lifestyle that fits nicely with concepts of leisure, tranquility and the ‘good life”, as defined by modern marketing. We live in a world where the economic system is driven by the incessant marketing of brands using narratives that emphasize taking care of yourself. These messages resonate with our survival instincts and the reality that our energy and will power are limited resources. As much as we have been created in God’s divine image, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. [Apostle] Paul talks about the same thing in Romans 7, when he says he cannot do the good he wants to do, but is instead stuck doing just the opposite. This is the everyday challenge of being a steward and disciple. For a more complete reading of this article see www.thelutheran.org.

Congregational Life Board invites you..

You’re invited to join us for a free financial educational series called More Than Money Matters®.
