From the Principal/CEOLourdes Lambert

It doesn’t seem that long ago when I welcomed you all as freshman. I told all of you and your parents that day not to blink because four years were going to fly by, well, someone blinked! Honestly, not even I could

have predicted how quickly the four years would go or how much I would come to respect and admire you all.

I am so inspired by you and the faith filled individuals you are. Your faith has been a model for me and for many others over the last four years. Through you, I have learned to trust in His timing, rely on His promises, wait for His answers, believe in His miracles, and rejoice in His goodness – all because I have watched you grow spiritually, emotionally and academically. Remember, we are all called to act in such a manner that WE are living proof of a loving God. Thank you for that gift. You are all indeed living proof of a loving God.

I watched you celebrate one another during Senior Awards ceremony and the Commencement ceremony, you were filled with a sense of pride. Pride in yourselves and pride in one another. Remember this feeling of accomplishment as you continue your academic journeys and embrace that pride in a job well done. Let your love for God change the world you will enter in the next phase of your journey, but do not ever allow that world change your love for God.

Wherever you are, remember that we are with you, praying for you and pulling for you. Remember that though you will go on to be and do many different things, that you will always be a Knight Forever.

From the Guidance OfficeShannon Brown, Kati Fulk, and Teresa Rupper

SENIORS Congratulations and best wishes from the Guidance office to the Class of 2017! This year’s seniors have many proud accomplishments of which to be proud. As of graduation, 99% of our 167 graduates will be attending college (either two or four-year) in the fall and have been offered over 19.5 million dollars in scholarships. That is an incredible amount and a testament to our seniors’ hard work and drive. Additionally, we have four seniors who will be serving our country; one in the National Guard; one at the United States Naval Academy; and two at the United States Air Force Academy. If any senior has made a change in their post-high school plans, please contact the Guidance office immediately. This is vital for ensuring final transcripts are sent to the appropriate college or university. Final transcripts will be sent out to colleges during the first week of June. Students needing to have final transcripts sent to the NCAA can be assured those will be sent at that time as well.

The Knight Times

JUNIORS Summer is a great time for juniors to begin organizing for college applications in the Fall. Although they can’t actually finalize and submit an application until school begins again in August, there are a few summer projects students can complete to get some work off of their plate this Fall. These ideas include: compiling a list of potential schools and deadlines, researching scholarships/financial aid available from those schools, thinking of whom they would like to ask for a recommendation letter, and making notes for potential college essays are all great tasks for summer. Additionally, if students will be using the Common Application for college applications, those essay prompts have been released. Students are advised to pick one essay from the available seven and write 650 words or less on their chosen topic. Common essay prompts can be found by visiting http://www.commonapp.org/whats-appening/application-updates/common-application-announces-2017-2018-essay-prompts.Any current junior (Class of 2018) who is planning to play Division I or II sports in college are reminded that they must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center. This link will help you get started: www.eligibilitycenter.org Print off the transcript release form and bring it to the Guidance office so your official transcript can be sent to the NCAA.

Focus Week Update:JUNIORS’ COLLEGE VISIT PREP WEEK (s), MAY 1-11

The Junior College Visit Prep Week returned by popular demand for a second week. Roughly twenty juniors came to the Taylor Center to research schools to visit this summer, learn what questions to ask on campus tours, and pick up a copy of the 2017-2018 Common App essay prompts. Congratulations to Jaret Fraley for being the lucky winner of the gift card drawing.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE WEEK, MAY 15-19

True to its name, this last focus week had something for everyone at Alter. Seniors were invited to update their resume showing their new status as high school graduates or to write thank-you notes for scholarship awards, juniors were encouraged to pick up Common App prompts, sophomores were invited to play college trivia, and freshman were encouraged to stop in for a final exam study tip packet. Approximately 25 students stopped in with Morgan Blalock being the lucky winner of the final gift card for the school year.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2017 The new Alter graduates will be continuing their education at 58 different colleges or universities in 14 states, the District of Columbia, 2 military service academies, and the National Guard. Well done!

Congratulations to all Alter students who received scholarships but especially to the following Taylor students: Scott Beinlich, Alex Borns, Nick Busher, Nicholas Craft , James Finke, Annie Gerding, Megan Goheen, Joan Griffin, Nick Groene, Tommy Mangin, Kane Martin, Taylour McMullen , Arlette Marie Munyankindi, Aaron Neely, Kyle Roshong, Robby Ruffolo, Holden Rushing, Michael Saturno, Nicholas Sprauer , Clarissa Sumika Stansbury, , Faith Stuart, Matthew Zelinski

Additionally, Madison Brewster and Toni Hill were awarded the Taylor Scholarship established by John N. and Connie Taylor in 2006. This scholarship is offered to participants of College and Career Resource Centers, like the Taylor Center here at Alter, who plan to attend Sinclair Community College. The scholarship qualifies students for full tuition, fees, and books annually for up to three years.

These students took the extra time and effort to search and complete scholarship applications, proving the Taylor Center mantra of “The best kind of money is free money” is certainly true!

Campus MinistryDave Conard

I always seem to reflect on plans at the close of the school year. It is a time where when we look back over the year, but more importantly a time when we also look forward to our future. As we look forward we often make plans – lots of them. Our seniors have plans for life beyond Alter High School. Our underclassmen are filled with plans for next year and are excited about taking on new roles in the school. There are 8th graders who are planning to become part of the Alter Community in the Fall. Faculty and staff are busy with plans for next year’s teaching and learning. Personally too, we have many plans. We plan as families for our future together. We may plan for a vacation or some other relaxation time during the summer. And with all of this planning comes a great deal of excitement. It gives us an opportunity to look to the future with hope and embrace the possibilities. Planning also helps to make the future a little less scary. In uncertain times a plan can help us feel more in control.

And yet, it is good to remember that our plans are not our own. Our plans are only ever successful if they are rooted in God’s ultimate plan for us. It is sometimes easy to get caught up in our planning and feel as though we have it all figured out. We can delude ourselves into thinking we really are in control. When I begin to feel this way, God often sends me a reminder that all plans are ultimately his. His will for my life is His, not mine. It seems to be a lesson that I need to be taught over and over again. It is in following God’s plan for us that we become more fully who we are to be. And in this we find true hope, not a false sense of security. Our plans may not always work out, but God’s plan for us is sure. In a world of uncertainty, our faith gives us hope and our hope gives us joy.

This is a time of plans in Campus ministry as well. Right now, we a busy with planning for our summer service trips. A groups of Alter students, teachers and parents will be traveling to Chimaltenango, Guatemala next month to build ties of community and friendship with people there. They will be staying at an orphanage Alter students have visited many times over the years. Our students and the kids there are both very much looking forward to seeing each other.

I am also planning right now for next year’s retreats. Current sophomores and juniors should have signed up for their retreat preferences by last week. If they have not, they can still do so by going to the link that was emailed to them at the beginning of the month. Initial rosters for both Kairos and Junior Retreats will be sent this week and posted on the peer ministry bulletin board across from the chapel. These will remain up all summer if anyone is in the building and wants to check them. These are only preliminary lists though, and could change a good deal as people request to be moved around. The finalized lists for the year will be out at the end of August.

So, as we end this year let us give thanks to God for its many blessings. As we look to our future, whatever it may be for each of us and for our school, let’s us do so with hope and always allow God’s grace to enter our plans.

OCSAA Accreditation News Every six years, Alter High School has to evaluate itself, set goals, collect data and meet certain standards in order to achieve FULL Accreditation by the Ohio Catholic School Accreditation Association (OCSAA). Alter has completed it’s sixth year and has achieved full accreditation. It will repeat the process again next year. The following is a summary of the goals that were set and the data that was collected. The academic goal Alter set back in 2012 was to “improve student’s critical thinking skills across the curriculum.” A critical thinking measure was given to the students during the second, fourth and sixth year to measure outcomes. In addition, teachers in each class were expected to assign one additional critical thinking assignment or activity. After several years of some teacher training, the data shows that student’s critical thinking abilities did not change in a significant way; however, the students were exposed to a lot more critical thinking lessons. The senior class, for example, were exposed to about 48 additional critical thinking lessons than they would have been had the goal not been set. In addition, a comprehensive survey of faculty, staff and students indicates that 81% believe that critical thinking lessons are “always” or “often” a part of student’s daily learning. The Catholic identity goal was to “increase student involvement in the liturgical expressions of the Church”. We believed that by increasing students understanding of the mass, it would inspire them to participate more. Over the past years, teachers and students were taught the meaning and importance of the rituals in the liturgy in a more intentional way. The importance of participation has also been emphasized on a regular basis as well. Over the past six years, the data indicates a 21% increase in student participation at mass, a 7% increase in the knowledge of the mass and a 12% increase in involvement in the Church at home or school. Alter will begin the process again next school year by collecting data, meeting the required standards and reflecting on its next goals for the six years.

key clubOn Saturday, May 13th, over 70 people gathered in the Alter parking lot to build wall panels for a house being built in Trotwood by “Catch the Building Spirit”- a partner with Habitat for Humanity.  Organized by Bob Duplain, Alter students gathered with some students from CJ, Carroll, the Dayton STEM School and New Carlisle to help provide an area family with a home.  In addition to several parents, project managers from “Catch the Building Spirit” came to supervise each team in the building process.  Many students came early at 10:30 am to help unload materials and many stayed till 3:30 in the afternoon to finish the building.  All the students were enthusiastic, helpful and determined to complete 26 wall panels in total.  It was the first time some student had used a hammer and nails.  It is our hope that students will volunteer for “Catch the Building Spirit” this summer to help complete the house.  Special thanks to Bob Duplain from “Catch the Building Spirit” for his efforts in making this happen.  If any parents or students would like to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity by working with “Catch the Building Spirit” or make a donation go to:    http://catchthebuildingspirit.org or find them on Facebook.

scholarship breakfastThis year’s Scholarship Breakfast was full of thankfulness, fun, and recognition. Our many donors and scholarship recipients met for mass and then gathered for a wonderful breakfast. We heard the words of our leader, Lourdes Lambert. We celebrated the accom-plishments conveyed from our Director of Advancement, Rick Willits. We listened to the heart-felt words of one of our donors as to why scholarship is important to so many. We also enjoyed hearing some of our students. Three of our scholarship recipients (freshman Dana Anderson, junior Brendan Plate, and senior Michael Beam) expressed what scholarship means to a student at Alter High School. They were so poignant with their comments, and they were perfect in their com-munication of our sentiments. The power of scholarship is evident, and the power of our love for Alter was even more apparent. The cafeteria was full! While this presents a challenge as to where we will hold this event next year, it’s also great news - - as it means we have added more scholarships! Six years ago we had some students on Alter Scholars Grants and two students who received Knights Council Scholarships. We now have 108 students on some type of scholarship here at Alter! We’re making a difference one scholarship at a time……

It’s also been fun to see the successes of all of our students who have received scholarships during their time at Alter. Our scholarship students do great things….. We track our students who received scholarships to realize all the great things they do post-Alter. They are succeeding at some of the best colleges, and some are now graduated and working at strong companies doing great things. Did the scholarship make a difference? We hope so.

The implementation of scholarships have resulted from many different influences. We see scholarships that have started from parents honoring their children, from children honoring their parents for the sacrifices they made to send them to Alter, from alumni who care deeply about their school, and from students honoring past coaches and teachers. The opportunity to keep Alter affordable now seems endless.

phone-a-thonThank you to all our students who volunteered their time in calling alumni and parents in our Annual Phone-a-Thon!  We were able to raise over $20,000 for our annual fund.  There are just a few short weeks left to make your 2016-2017 Annual Fund donation. Any amount is so appreciated and needed.  Thank you  for your support.  Go Knights!

TOP 3 Reasons Why You Should Be An Active Part of THE Alter Boosters

1.You are supporting every student who attends Alter. You may think The Alter Boosters is a sports organization. That is a popular misconception. The Alter Booster Organization is made up of ALL Current Alter Parents, as well as Past Parents, Alter Alumni and Friends of the school.  Our mission is to provide financial support to the school and its operations. While there are several different booster organizations within the Alter Community, each supporting its own organization, The Alter Boosters supports every Alter Student.

2.You are contributing to Alter’s “Tax Levy”. In 2013, Kettering voters passed a 5 year/$5,000,000.00 tax levy for Kettering City Schools. Averaged out, each of the 12 public schools will receive less than $85,000.00 from this levy per year. Being a private school, Alter does not receive money from this levy. Thanks to The Alter Boosters, we don’t need it. The Alter Boosters contributes on average $250,000.00 annually to Alter High School. That’s almost 3 times what the public schools receive. The Alter Booster Organization is the #1 Benefactor of Alter High School, donating over $6,000,000.00 since 1983.

3.You are continuing the Alter Tradition and keeping Alter Strong. So many Alter Alumni return to the Alter Community to raise their own children because of the strength and support they received and continue to receive from this community. Alter prides itself on educational excellence. But Alter is also a place where we live our Christian Values every day. Within our community, every student, every parent, every family has a chance and the support needed to thrive. Alter truly is where you belong.

HOW can you get involved? The best part is YOU are already a part of the organization. There is no application process, no membership fee and

EVERYONE is welcome. We are always looking for people who want to share their time, talent and/or treasure with Alter. It’s easier than you think. Whether you sponsor an event, work a shift at AlterFest or become a member of the Booster

Executive Board, you are a valued and needed member of this organization. Help us help Alter thrive. Be an Active member of THE Alter Boosters.

We are currently recruiting for a few key AlterFest positions. It’s easier than you think. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering, please contact Joanne George at [email protected] or call 937-434-2059. Be a part of the greatest family festival in the Dayton area and the booster organization that

supports every Alter student.

The South Dayton Knights Football Program is an excellent way to teach your child the game of football, while instilling a strong commitment to teamwork, values and self-discipline. Winning is a result of these qualities. The Cheer Program is a great opportunity to meet new friends, show Knight Spirit, perform at games, and still be able to participate in Fall sports at your school. NEW IN 2016: The Peewee program has joined the SWBL and will play a 9 game regular season schedule as well as the Playoffs. All home games will be played on the Alter Varsity Field. If You Played Last Year – WE WANT YOU BACK! We have a lot of new and exciting things changing within the program and you need to experience it Þrst-hand. If You Have Never Played – IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY…AND IT’S NEVER TOO LATE. You may be thinking “my child is too young” or “it’s too late to try football”…WRONG! The SDK program will quickly get your child up to speed and provide the opportunity to excel on the Þeld Ð and off!

2017 SDK Football & Cheer Registration is Here! Last season was a great success on many levels for the SDK program. Five of the teams qualified for the playoffs - with the 5th and 7th grade teams winning league championships. Additionally, the pee-wees successfully completed their first year of league play in the SWBL, SDK Cheer completed a second successful season, and all home games were played on Alter’s Varsity Field. As we prepare for the 2017 season, we are making plans to add some special “touches” to create an even better experience for the players and cheerleaders. We will share these with you in the near future, but we know you will love them! Registration opens on May 1st. Anyone registering between May 1st and May 31st will receive discounted registration. Did You Know: •  SDK Football & Cheer is one of the largest

youth programs in the state of Ohio •  All SDK Coaches are USA Football certified •  Cheerleaders are encouraged to also

participate in Fall school athletics without the pressure of being cut or demoted.

•  Opportunity to play / participate with students from other feeder schools

•  Emphasis is placed on building a foundation for proper technique and skill – winning is a by-product of doing things the right way

•  No fundraising requirements •  Opportunities to interact with Varsity

Football Players and Cheerleaders
