Restoration

Dear Friends of Hebron Housing Services,

We are honored to bring you the 2019 Hebron Housing Services Annual Report. As we reflect on the work that has been done during the past year, we are equally humbled and inspired. Because of your generous investments, we served more guests than ever before, benefitted from more people providing voluntary services in the community, and expanded our partnerships with many local organizations whose generosity helped operate shelters for the most vulnerable in our community.

The work we do at Hebron Housing Services is only possible because of you. This report illustrates what we have accomplished together. We look forward to continuing our partnerships to ensure those in need in Waukesha County have access to our shelters and are provided the support they need to thrive.

Thank you for helping us keep our guests safe during these difficult times. Together, we can continue to work toward our mission of ending homelessness in Waukesha County.

Ildiko HuppertzBoard President

Thank you for joining us on our journey to end homelessness in Waukesha County. This past year was one of transformation at Hebron Housing Services as we strengthened community partnerships, refreshed our mission, and welcomed new leaders to our board and our organization. In renewing our mission and messaging, we focused on our role of bringing hope, dignity, restoration, and empowerment to families and individuals struggling with homelessness. We believe that the journey to stability starts with self-worth, and we strive to provide tools to foster self-sufficiency in our guests. Every person is worthy of compassion and respect, and our guests find welcoming arms and a steady hand to guide them through what is often the most difficult time in their lives. Above all else, we are grateful for the support of our donors, our volunteers, and our community partners for helping to make this happen. With your partnership, we look forward to great things to come.

Maureen AtwellExecutive Director

About Us

Since 1982, Hebron House has restored hope and dignity to those in need in our community. In 2019, we found ourselves at a crossroads, asking how do we make a difference in the lives of the people we serve, and how can we do even more?

Starting with a rebrand, from “Hebron House of Hospitality” to “Hebron Housing Services,” we highlighted our mission of not just providing shelter but providing long-term solutions for sustained success.

A change in leadership, an incredibly successful Annual Gala, an extraordinary year-end appeal, and countless other positive steps later, 2019 was the year of restoration for Hebron Housing Services and our guests.

2019 HIGHLIGHTSRESTORATIONA Mission Of Hope And Dignity. A Year Of . . .

A name fitting of our mission

In 2019, we reevaluated everything we knew about Hebron House, our place in the community, and how we serve those in need. This focused time of reflection included discovery meetings with our board, our staff, and our volunteers to ask, what is our mission, and does it align with public perception?

One major takeaway was the realization that our name Hebron House of Hospitality was communicating that we are one location. In reality, our organization is dedicated to a holistic approach to serving those struggling with homelessness by providing shelter at multiple locations and providing case management for housing solutions. After careful deliberation, the name Hebron Housing Services emerged as the right message for all that we do for our community and our guests as a long-term solution provider.

The name change required rebranding of our logo, key messaging, colors and imagery, collateral materials, and website. For this, we turned to B&Co., a local branding firm that generously donated all services to relaunch our organization as Hebron Housing Services. This also included renaming our Hebron House shelter, which serves women and families. For this, there was no other name more fitting than Juno House, named in honor of our founder and community advocate, Bernie Juno. (Note: Sadly, Bernie passed away on February 2, 2020, but will be remembered with an unveiling of the Juno House sign later in 2020.)

New leadership

Hebron Housing Services also established new leadership in 2019. The board of directors now represents an impressive cross-section of business professionals from various sectors including banking, finance, healthcare, construction, energy, food service, hospitality, marketing, real estate, manufacturing and community advocacy.

In October 2019, our organization also appointed Maureen Atwell as Acting Executive Director to lead the organization and oversee all operations and staff. Maureen has a long history of fundraising and volunteering for organizations that serve the homeless and is passionate about our mission and work. Previously, she was the Director of the Waukesha County Child Support Division and under her tenure, the agency won statewide awards for excellence in child support performance and job service programming. Prior to this, Maureen served as a Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney from 2008-2015.

The six-month position gave the board the opportunity to see firsthand the electric energy Maureen brought to Hebron Housing Services as an administrator, fundraiser, community advocate, and spokesperson. (Note: Maureen was named Executive Director in March 2020.)

In November, our annual Gala unveiled our new name and branding in spectacular fashion. One of the most successful fundraising events in our organization’s history, 180 attendees, including prominent members from the county and state, gave more than $140,000 to help further our mission of restoring hope and dignity to those in need. More than 55% of the total revenue from the Gala was raised on the day from over 100 generous donors. Sponsorship also increased from 2018, with a total of 16 corporate underwriters. The “Fund The Need” auction raised nearly $55,000 to supply the shelters for the winter ahead.

Wrapping up the year on a high note, our December appeal was one of our most successful. Our community generously gave over $163,000, significantly exceeding our goals and capping off a momentous year in our history.

A year of restoration, 2019 reminded us that the mission of ending homelessness is as important as ever. More than 30 years after Bernie Juno founded Hebron House of Hospitality, we remain steadfast in our commitment to those struggling with homelessness in our community, a commitment to restoring hope and dignity to all who come to us in need.
