A Message from the Principal September 7, 2016 What do I want to take home from my summer vacation? Time. The wonderful luxury of being at rest. The days when you shut down the mental machinery that keeps life on track and let life simply wander. The days when you stop planning, analyzing, thinking and just are. Summer is my period of grace. Ellen Goodman, Journalist Welcome back to our returning families and a warm welcome to our many new families, students and teachers to St. Bonaventure Catholic School. I pray that summer was your period of grace as well. We are off and running – planning, analyzing and thinking once again. Please join me in extending a warm “Saint” welcome to the many new faces you might see on our campus in the coming weeks as you participate in the many volunteer opportunities inside and outside of the classroom. The students are also showing their “Saint” spirit in the classrooms and on the playgrounds as they welcome their new classmates and in some cases “new” teachers. I’d like to take this opportunity to formally introduce our new faculty members to St. Bonaventure School as well as communicate grade level or role changes for several staff members. A Message from the Principal

September 7, 2016

What do I want to take home from my summer vacation? Time. The wonderful luxury of being at rest.

The days when you shut down the mental machinery that keeps life on track and let life simply wander.

The days when you stop planning, analyzing, thinking and just are. Summer is my period of grace.

Ellen Goodman, Journalist

Welcome back to our returning families and a warm welcome to our many new families,

students and teachers to St. Bonaventure Catholic School. I pray that summer was your period

of grace as well. We are off and running – planning, analyzing and thinking once again.

Please join me in extending a warm “Saint” welcome to the many new faces you might see on

our campus in the coming weeks as you participate in the many volunteer opportunities inside

and outside of the classroom. The students are also showing their “Saint” spirit in the

classrooms and on the playgrounds as they welcome their new classmates and in some cases

“new” teachers. I’d like to take this opportunity to formally introduce our new faculty members

to St. Bonaventure School as well as communicate grade level or role changes for several staff

members.

Primary : TK – Sr. Anne Marie/Mrs. J. Muecke, K – Mrs. T. Jones/Mrs. K. Cotter, Gr. 1 – Mrs. N.

Martin/Mrs. D. Grant, Gr. 2 – Ms. M. Carey/Mrs. J. Luciano.

(grades K-8), Robotics – Mr. P. To (grades 3-8, not pictured)

We want to also keep in our prayers the faculty members that have moved on to other

endeavors; Mrs. Lisa Calderone and Mrs. Melissa Quijada. We thank them for the many gifts

they shared so generously with our St. Bonaventure students and families over the years.

Two of our former faculty members, Mrs. Donna Grier and Mrs. Dorothy Mullin are still an

integral part of our school community. Mrs. Grier, after 25 years teaching 6th grade is enjoying

her position as Mrs. Martin’s Instructional Aide. Mrs. Mullin has taught several grade levels at

St. Bonaventure over the years and her gifts are now being shared with the faculty in her

position as the Educational Technology Coordinator.

We are grateful for the gifts our new faculty will bring to our community and are thankful to

those that said “yes” to the opportunity to grow and share their gifts at a new grade level or

position.

Family Envelope Procedure Clarification

The SBS Family Envelope is our primary method of disseminating information

to our families. It contains school bulletins and other news information which

is imperative for our parents to read. The Family Envelope is emailed out to

families and posted on the school website on the first and third Wednesday

of each month.

If you would like to have a flyer or information included in the Family

Envelope, it needs to be submitted to Mrs. Vogel by noon on the Monday

prior to the posting date. This much time is needed for the editing and

approval process.

Please email all information to [email protected] . All flyers

should be created in Word or Publisher.

Thank you in advance for following the correct procedure

and adhering to the deadline schedule!

Dear Parents and Guardians, Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year. My name is Ally Phillipsen and I’m the Box Tops (BT) Coordinator at SBS. I’m excited and look forward to working with all the parents, students and faculty so that together we can reach and exceed our goal to raise $1,500 for our school. Last year our school received $1,500 in Box Tops funds because of YOUR support and collection of Box Tops. How Box Tops Works:

Find Box Tops on hundreds of products Clip Box Tops from each package (please make sure the Box Top has not expired since we

will not be reimbursed for expired Box Tops) Send the Box Tops to school

o Place Box Tops in an envelope or baggie with the teacher’s name and room on it to ensure classroom gets credit for the Box Tops.

Box Tops are each worth $0.10 each for our school Additionally you can shop online. Shop at your favorite online stores through the Box Tops Marketplace (boxtops4education.com/marketplace). Our school can earn eBoxTops with every qualifying purchase you make, at no additional cost to you. We will continue with tradition and the class that brings in the most Box Tops each month will receive an ice cream social.

Each month classrooms will have until the last Friday of the month to turn-in their Box Tops (ex: 9/30, 10/28, 11/18 etc.)

Winning classroom will be announced on the FIRST FRIDAY of each month. Please spread the word and ask Grandparents, relatives, co-workers and neighbors to save Box Tops. Thank you for your continued support of our school! Ally Phillipsen [email protected]

About Kris Kringle Each year, the school library is transformed into a Christmas wonderland full of hand crafted, quality gifts for the whole family. Students in Sprouts to fourth grade have a designated class time to shop in the store with the help of teachers, aides and parent volunteers. All students may shop during their free time throughout the day. Most gift items are $10 or less, with a few special exceptions. The Kris Kringle store gives students an opportunity to focus on family and giving to others in the true spirit of the holiday season. The store also reinforces basic math concepts, budgeting and simple money management. The pride of giving a gift to mom, dad, grandma or brother that they chose – and wrapped – themselves is truly magical. Thank you for your support to help ensure this wonderful SBS holiday tradition continues.

Santa’s Workshop is now in full swing! Join us on the following dates for crafting and Kris Kringle store prep. You may also drop off your crafted items and pick up additional ideas to craft at home.

• Kris Kringle Workshop: Every Tuesday starting Sept. 13, 6:30 - 7:30 pm, in the School Library (unless otherwise noted on the school calendar).

• Kris Kringle Store Set Up: Wednesday, Dec. 7, 9 am - 4 pm, School Library • Kris Kringle Store: Thursday - Friday, Dec. 8 - 9, 8 am - 4 pm, School Library • Kris Kringle Store Clean Up: Friday, Dec. 9, 4 - 7 p.m., School Library

Earn Service Hours – From Home!

To earn service hours, you may help craft, shop for crafts and projects, coordinate a store section, or help set up, work in the store, and clean up. Most work can be done at home.

If you’d like to help us craft items for the store, please start now! For craft ideas, check out our Pinterest page: www.pinterest.com/ctagonzales/kris-kringle/.

Crafting at home? Great! Just email us at [email protected] with the details of what you are crafting (item description, quantity, cost of materials, and estimated completion date). We need items for baby, pets, housewares, baking, for mom and grandma, for dad and grandpa, and toys for kids. All ideas and assistance welcome!

Thank you for your support of this fun activity for our children, where they learn about finance and the importance of giving to others in the spirit of the holiday season. Please reach out with questions or ideas to [email protected]. Or call us at 714.425.5513.

Have fun with nonfictionIn addition to reading stories, children need to learn how to read for information. To interest your child in nonfiction reading:

• Lookforbooksabout how things work. How does wheat get from a field into her bowl of pasta? How does the dance contest get onto the TV screen?

• Haveherwrite a how-to manual for a task she enjoys. She could explain how to shoot a basketball or make a great sandwich.

• Readnonfictionyourself. Help her see that learning takes place anywhere and at any time—not just in school.

Your child’s sense of responsibility plays a big part in his school success. And the best way to strengthen that sense is to give your child responsibilities.

Sit down together and make a checklist of a few age-appropriate tasks you expect him to handle. Agree on rewards for a job well done and consequences for shirking his duties. Here’s a starter checklist you can adapt:

• Getupon time. • Fixbreakfast for himself.

• Selectan outfit.

• Packa lunch.

• Completehomework.

• Bringyou forms to sign.

• Returnsigned forms to school.

• Maintaingrades.

• Getalongwith siblings.

• Keephis bedroom tidy.

• Completeassigned chores.

• Gettobedon time.

• Takecareof personal hygiene.

• Feedandcarefor pets.

RespectleadstolearningRespectful behavior is a key to a happy and productive school for all. Encourage your child to:

• Becourteous. Remind him to say please and thank you.

• Dohisjob. If students don’t do their jobs—paying attention in class, home-work—it’s harder for everyone to learn.

• Raisehishand and wait to be called on.

• Listentotheteacher’s comments. To help children learn, teachers have to point out mistakes. Your child will do bet-ter if he can accept constructive feedback.

AttendanceaffectssuccessMissing school can hurt both the absent students and their classmates. When students miss school, they miss out on learning. They have to work harder to catch up. And when teachers have to use class time to repeat material for those who were absent, the whole class is delayed.

TakeeasystepsnowtogettheschoolyearofftoagreatstartIt’s a new school year! That usually means new routines, schedules and priorities for elementary schoolers and their families. Try these practical ideas to set your child and yourself up for a great year:

• Keepafamilycalendar.Mark each family member’s activities in a different color.

• Planforafter-schoolactivities.Schedule adequate time for homework, play, sports, clubs and family time.

• Establishafamilyreadingtime.• Stockastudyareafor your child. Provide paper, pencils, a dictionary

and other needed supplies.

• Setupafileforschoolnotices so they won’t get misplaced.

• Keepaneyeonrecreationalscreentime. Monitor the time your child spends watching TV, playing electronic games, texting and surfing the Internet. Set a firm rule that homework and chores come before screen time. Be sure that she has plenty of time to read, exercise and just relax.

• Collectimportantphonenumbers, such as numbers for the school office, after-school program and a neighbor. Post them along with current work, doctor and other emergency contact numbers.

• Makeabackupplan. Find another parent who will exchange school carpool favors—in case you get sick or delayed by work or traffic.

Communicationbuildsastrongparent-teacherteamYou and the teacher both want your child to succeed in school. And when you work together, the results can be powerful. To ensure a great parent-teacher relationship:

• Setapleasanttone.Ask questions respectfully, and let the teacher know that you appreciate her work.

• Listenwithapositiveattitude. Addressing struggles is the only way to find solutions.

• Thinkoftheteam. Make requests, not demands. Speak of we instead of you.“How can we stay in touch to help Ben?”

EncouragebetterlisteningListening is one of the most important skills kids need for school success. To develop your child’s listening skills:

• Bearolemodel. When your child tells you something, stop what you’re doing. Give him your full attention.

• Practicereflectivelistening. When you say something, ask your child to repeat it in his own words.

• Stopandaskquestions when you read aloud. At an exciting part, you might ask, “Why do you think she said that?”

___1.Doyouenforce a regular bedtime? Elementary school kids need at least 10 hours of sleep to function at their best.

___2.Doyoumakesure your child eats breakfast each day?

___3.Doyouprovide nutritious snacks for your child to eat after school?

___4.Doyouencourage your child to exercise every day? Studies show exercise can improve memory and focus.

___5.Doyouremind your child to wash her hands often?

Hand washing reduces illness-related school absences.

Howwellareyoudoing?More yes answers mean you are helping your child learn habits for good health. For each no, try that idea.

LetyourchildlearnbydoingWhen children are babies, parents must protect them in every way they can. But by the time kids reach elementary school, they are able to do lots of things by themselves. Doing so teaches them valuable skills such as communication, negotiation, persever-ance and decision making.

Foster your child’s budding indepen-dence. Let her do some age-appropriate things for herself. Will she make mistakes? Probably. But she’ll learn from them.

HowcanIputanendtohomeworkbattles?

Q:SchoolhasjustbegunandmyfourthgraderandIarealreadyatoddsoverhomework.Firstweargueaboutwhenheshouldstart.Next hesayshedidhisreadingatschool. Thenhe“doesn’tunderstand”themath.HowcanIimprovemyson’scooperation, reducehisfrustrationandmakehomeworktimeeasier?A: Homework hassles can affect the whole family. But you can go a long way toward eliminating them with four simple steps:

1.Setaregularhomeworktime.Kids benefit from routines. Some work best right after school. Others do better if they work right before or after dinner. Let your child choose, but once he picks a time, that’s it.

2.Makehomeworktimeamandatoryevent. This will solve the problem of “I did that at school.” If he truly has no assignments, he can spend the time reading ahead or solving practice math problems.

3.Askquestions when your child says he doesn’t understand. For exam-ple, instead of explaining the math, ask, “How did you solve that last problem? Could you do that here, too?”

4.Neverdoyourchild’sworkforhim. When the teacher checks his homework, she will see what he understands—or doesn’t. If you do the work, she won’t know if she needs to reteach something.

Are you promoting healthy habits?A new school year is a great time to establish (or reinforce) some healthy habits for your child. Are you supporting success at school by promoting wellness at home? Answer yes or no to the questions below:

can give children, next

to good habits, are

good memories.~
