BAND NOTES

Band Newsletter As we get closer to the end of the school year, I would like to share with you some important dates and information happening in the band program. April is full of performances, contest, and auditions. If you have any questions please send me an email. Congratulations to Wind Ensemble for their Superior Rating and Symphonic Band for their Excellent Rating. Both groups had great performances! The Wind Ensemble had straight superior ratings. They were one of only five bands out of forty who performed over the weekend to receive the perfect score! Performances: All City Band Concerts are April 20th and 21st at 7 pm at the high school in the gymnasium. April 20th is Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Albion Middle School, All 5th grade band members. April 21st is Symphonic Band, Jazz Lab Band, Center Middle School, All 6th grade band members. State Band Contest for Wind Ensemble is hopefully going to be on Friday, April 22nd at North Royalton High School. I have requested this day and should get confirmation this coming week. All are welcome to come and support the group. Spring Concert is Tuesday, May 10th at 6:30 pm. All ensembles will perform in addition to the presentation of awards and slide show. The Memorial Day Parade is Monday, May 30th. There will be more information, as we get closer. We will be out of school earlier this year so I am asking that all band members please attend the parade. It is a good service to our community on an important day and it is a short time commitment in the morning. I ask that seniors please perform if possible. Seniors are welcome to perform in the Strongsville Homecoming rehearsals and parade in July. (continued on next page)

Auditions: We will be selecting squad/section leaders and officers before the spring concert. Flag Auditions are Tuesday, April 5th. Flag auditions are open to non-instrumentalists this year. Band Auditions will be the last week of April during school and after school. Drumline Auditions are May 3rd and 4th after school. Drum Major Auditions will be May 5th after school. Incoming Freshman Band Orientation is Tuesday, May 17th at 6:30 pm in the SHS auditorium. Please check the calendar online. Remember to click on the day for more information. Plan the summer in advance to avoid conflicts. We are going through the process of getting a trip approved for next school year over spring break. The entire band and orchestra would be travelling together. We took an informal poll Friday and it was overwhelmingly positive. This trip is subject to approval by the Board of Education. We can announce the destination once it is approved by the Board of Education.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSIC ~ ALBION AND CENTER

On Tuesday, March 15th, the 7th grade bands from Albion and Center came together for a concert that featured outstanding performances by both groups, as well as a number of solos and small ensembles. This is an annual concert, however it takes on a special significance this year as the two bands will become one when the new Strongsville Middle School opens. The goal of this year’s concert was to allow students to not only showcase their hard work, but also get to know one another better prior to the first day of school. Students met early to rehearse a combined piece, and then had a pizza party. During both activities, students mixed, mingled and talked to new friends. During the concert, both bands performed three pieces and all 90 students combined at the end to perform one additional piece as the “future 8th grade band." In the middle, students who were participating in solo & ensemble contest performed for the audience. We are very proud to announce that they all received I’s and II’s at contest! It was a very successful concert thanks to the hard work of everyone involved. I want to send a special thanks to SIMB for providing the dinner for the students. They had a great time, and it was a good way to get to know one another on an informal basis. The concert was recorded for SCS TV and should be airing on tv and the youtube channel soon! STRONGSVILLE CITY SCHOOLS EARN NATIONAL DESIGNATION AS

"BEST COMMUNITY FOR MUSIC EDUCATION" FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR Strongsville, OH (March 31, 2016) - Strongsville City Schools has been honored with the “Best Communities for Music Education” designation from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. This is the third straight year the district has earned this distinction. Strongsville joins 476 districts across the country in receiving the prestigious award in 2016.

The “Best Communities for Music Education” designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Districts that have been recognized by the NAMM Foundation are often held up as models for other educators looking to boost their own music education programs.

"I am very proud to be a part of the Strongsville music department. The things that I have always loved about teaching here is that all areas of music are equally accomplished, we have great parent and community support, and that music teachers in our district collaborate to help students succeed,” said Chris Chidsey, Center Middle School Band Director and Assistant Director for the Strongsville High School Marching Mustangs.

To qualify for the “Best Communities” designation, Strongsville City Schools answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. This award recognizes that Strongsville is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the new federal education legislation, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), through the inclusion of a well-rounded education for all children inclusive of the arts and music.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2016-2017

Dear Parents of Band and Orchestra Students, Would you like to expand your social network with people who may become great friends? Would you like to have fun while working with other dynamic parents who provide support for our district's renowned music program? Our Strongsville Instrumental Music Boosters (SIMB), who provide extensive funding and programming for our instrumental groups in the elementary, middle, and high schools, need your help for a couple of open positions. SIMB is looking for a second concession co-chair for next year's sports seasons (football and basketball). The concession stands are the lifeblood of the SIMB's ability to provide extensive funding for our instrumental music programs throughout the district. A second person to spearhead this vital committee would make the overall job much easier. If you like to organize things and work directly with the community, consider this position to get to know a lot of great people who work wonders. We are also looking for someone to chair our Krispy Kreme Donut and annual Hoagie Day opportunities. The Donut Chair position entails scheduling and arranging pickup for a tasty order just several times throughout the year. Easy, no frills and the kids will love you for it. Think you'll be lost or can't do it? No way! Our Executive Board and Committee chairs provide support and guidance all the way. We have over 25 chairpersons spearheading our committees. We all help each other. Nice people doing great things for our amazing students! No experience is necessary and we guarantee you'll have fun while getting to know other parents and our musical students. Please send your contact information and any questions to [email protected] Help make a difference in your child's life - get involved. It takes the whole 'Ville to make great music! Thanks, Sandy Treudler
