K o a l a N e w s Dear Koala families,

Welcome to the Koala group! We are so glad that you have chosen Bundoora Preschool. It has been wonderful to get to know your children and we look forward to a fantastic year! As always we started the year off with staggered starts. It was very useful to be able to meet the children in smaller groups to give us more quality time to begin to build a relationship with each child and start to assess where they are in their learning journey. The shorter times also give those children that need it, more time to build up to the longer days. I understand that this can be difficult and confusing but it is such a benefit to the children, thank you so much for accommodating this.

To begin with we are fostering the confidence of each child to enter the playroom and separate from their parent or caregiver and select areas of play with reducing adult support. Throughout the term so far, we have endeavoured to establish clear routines with the children using both visual and auditory cues to help them begin to be able to predict what will happen throughout the kinder session. Some basic kinder rules are being introduced to the children through both group discussion and scaffolding interactions between small groups of children. These rules centre around showing respect for others and keeping safe. The children are encouraged to greet staff verbally, maintaining eye contact and to begin to develop the skills to interact in shared play with their peers.

Lots of activities are planned to help the children learn each others’ names and the names of staff which will help us all to develop a sense of belonging to the group. We have recently introduced a game to help learn our names. This game involves dancing to music like an animal pictured on a movement card and when the music stops, the children crouch down on the ground and close their eyes. I then cover up one of the children and we all have to make a big circle and see if we can work out who is missing. We will also have a book with all of the children’s photos and we use this as a familiarisation tool and also to consolidate a sense of belonging to the group. Many sensory experiences enable children to explore their senses and also help children calm their emotions as needed.

Experiences have been set up to allow for solitary and more interactive play, by providing a wide range of activities set for different numbers of children. This gives the less confident children the opportunity to participate on their own, or quietly next to a peer, while those children who are more socially confi-dent can work alongside and together with their peers.

Group time has been lots of fun. We have sung familiar songs and learned some new ones. Articulation songs which promote phonetic awareness and recognition of letters have been popular. The children are practicing the correct position of the tongue and the mouth in order to make the correct sound. We have also been introducing a number of different dance songs such as ‘I like climbing trees for apples’ and ‘Twist, wiggle, shake’. The children enjoy the fun of the movement and participate enthusiastically which helps to extend body and spatial awareness.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me,

Marijke, Grazynka and Jean

Welcome to the Possum Group at Bundoora Preschool. We look forward to an exciting year with you and your children. We have had a great start to term 1. The children are starting to get to know each other and their teachers too. At the beginning the program is planned to ensure that the children are not overwhelmed by too many choices and challenges. As the children become more familiar and confident with the experiences and environments, activities will be extended or added to in order to challenge and stimulate the children’s learning, development and thinking. As the children’s interests and skills develop, we will plan our program to cater for these focus areas. During the first few ses-sions of the year, the children are becoming familiar with routines, transitions and expec-tations. This can be a big task for young children and you may find the children quite tired after a session or at the end of the week. The children are busy concentrating and co-operating with the group while at kindergarten.

The children have had the opportunity to explore our beautiful outdoor area, enjoying fun messy play in the sandpit. The outdoor dramatic play area is busy with wonderful im-aginative play. The children have enjoyed the outdoor chalk boards, encouraging wonder-ful collaborative artworks. Learning experiences inside have included familiar activities such as play dough, easel painting, block construction, pasting and drawing. Educators introduced a colour recognition activity that required the children to select various items of clothing to hang on a washing line. This game also encouraged turn taking. We have been sorting coloured animals on number cards. Children were encouraged to pick the animals up with tongs to challenge their fine motor control. As well as the physical test this learning experience supported children’s skills in categorizing, comparing, problem solving and general mathematics. Educators have also created an inquiry table with shells, sea creatures and natural materials to encourage children to explore creatures that live under the sea and support imaginative play.

The children have participated in large group experiences such as story time and music activities. ‘Wet,Wet Washing’, ‘I Like Climbing Trees for Apples’ and ‘Put a Spot Over There’ are some of our favourite songs. We also enjoyed a CD story called ‘Baby Elephant Walk’. We read ‘Who Sank the Boat?’ and extended this into a dramatic play area with props and characters from the book. This has encouraged the children to retell the story in their own way. This is a wonderful way to support children’s language and cognitive development. It also helps create relationships between the children through sharing ide-as and using their imaginations.

Thank you to everyone for bringing back the ‘All About Me’ sheets. The children have loved learning about each other and have complimented our getting to know you games in the first few weeks of kindergarten.

We have talked about Lunar New Year and the way people celebrate this festival. This week we introduced an Acknowledgement to Country, which will be a part of our pro-gram each session. We talked about the importance of this ritual and the reasons for it. Throughout the year this will be extended and developed as an interregnal part of our curriculum.

Some reminders……Please apply sunscreen before the beginning of each session, don’t forget a water bottle each day and please label everything with your child’s name. Thank you.

Regards Anne, Cathrine, Melinda and Silvana

Dear Families,

It's been really, really lovely getting to know you and your beautiful children! The children are settling in really well. We look forward to Isabelle, Charlie and Delta joining our Joeys group as well which will be after they celebrate their 3rd birth-day in the near future.

The children are getting used to the kinder routines of inside play, group time on the mat, outside play and inside for a story before the end of the session. They are navigating the room well and exploring the indoor and outdoor environments with interest. They are learning our 'progressive fruit' routine and are encouraged to sit and have some fruit and choose if they would like a drink of milk or water. If children choose not to have fruit, we ask them to have a drink from their water bottle. We also put fruit on the drink trolley and wheel it outside and find children enjoy eating outdoors as well.

The children are doing a wonderful job recognizing their name when finding their badge. They are enjoy-ing Storytime with 'Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?', Polar bear, polar bear, what do you hear?', 'Where is the green sheep?' to name a few. They are also enjoying singing and rhymes as Incey wincey spider, 3 little monkeys, 3 jellyfish, Baa baa black sheep, Here is a beehive, Everybody do this, Open shut them and more.

Thank you for having hats and spare clothes in the children's bags. Thank you to parents who have been in a position to be able to support our program by volunteering for the parent duty roster. Lastly, thank you so much for choosing our wonderful kinder. We are SO excited and looking forward to the many days ahead of watching and scaffolding your children in learning while they play!

Please do not hesitate to contact me or Grazynka with any questions or queries and we always welcome your input into our program. Any suggestions and ideas are always welcome!

Dani and Grazynka

Be SunSmart This Autumn! Summer may be officially over but UV levels have been consistently high with sun protection needed for most of the day. Have you seen the free SunSmart app? It shows daily sun protection times (when

UV levels are three or higher), UV levels and weather for your location. Please try to check the sun pro-tection times for your area each day so you can be sure you are being protected from UV when you

need to be.

Could everyone please ensure that your child has a named sun hat in their kinder bag until the end of April.

SunSmart Sunscreen reminder Clothing helps act as a barrier to UV reaching the skin. For those parts of skin you can't cover with clothing (e.g. face, neck, ears, lower arms and legs), please remember to use sunscreen. Sunscreen is like a back-up plan and should never be used on its own.

Remember to apply a generous amount of SPF 30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sun-screen to all exposed skin. Try to apply about 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every TWO hours (even if the label states four hours water resistance) or more frequently if sweating or swimming.

Check the use-by date and always store sunscreen below 30 degrees.

A very small number of people (less than 1%) may have an allergic reaction to some ingredients in sun-screen so it is recommended when using a new sunscreen to test it on a small patch of skin.

Sunscreens go through rigorous testing by the TGA to ensure they meet their SPF rating and provide the stated level of protection in a safe way. Research has shown sunscreens are an effective skin can-cer prevention tool.

Hold hands and don ’t run!

Please remember to always hold your child’s hand in the carpark outside kinder and ensure that they do not run out onto the car-park.

No Peeking!

While it can be very tempting to watch your little one through the window at pick up times, we ask that you please refrain from doing so as it can be a distrac-tion to the children.

Please be on time!

We ask that families make every effort to be on time to drop off and collect their children. It can be distressing and disruptive for children to be late for their session or left waiting at pick up time.

The kinder is always seeking donations for all sorts of events and every day activities at kinder. If you are able to donate a box of tissues, a pack of sponges, a kilo or two of flour (i.e. for making play dough), a ream of paper, a pack of laminating pouches or something else which may be used in a craft activity, it is greatly appreciated. Please speak to the staff. Donations are a great asset to kinder and offer the children a great range of resources to use. Thank You!

It’s an inevitable reality that our children get sick sometimes. We ask that families are especially thoughtful when it comes to the possibility of passing on illnesses to others who may come into contact with an unwell child.
