A Message from the Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation
Here at the Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation we are continuously inspired
by the bravery and resilience of the children who are cared for at the Janeway
Hospital, and the dedication and commitment of its staff.
That inspiration when coupled with the kindness and generosity of you, our
donors, enables us to provide the latest in medical technologies, enhanced staff
educational opportunities and pediatric research programs – ensuring excellence
in health care for our province’s children.
This past year alone we saw the opening of the much anticipated Colonel Harland
Sanders Pediatric Research Centre and Family Resource Centre located on the 4th
fl oor of the Janeway Hostel. As well, the latest in diagnostic imaging technology
was realized with the installation of the Direct Digital Radiography Suite (DDR).
We wish to thank each and every person who has made an impact on the care
offered at the Janeway Hospital. Every dollar raised makes a difference, whether
from a community event; a child’s penny collection; or a large corporate gift. The
role of our donor’s has become more important than ever.
On behalf of the Janeway Foundation Board of Directors we are pleased to present
the 2010-2011 Annual Report.
Lloyd Powell Lynn Sparkes
Chair Executive Director

Nolan Rossiter
Nolan Rossiter has won the hearts of all who know him. At just fi ve years of age, Nolan is a delightful bundle of energy, with a remarkable booming voice and courage beyond his years.
In May 2006, 6 month old Nolan was diagnosed with Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma, a very rare, very aggressive cancer - diagnosed in 1 - 2 people per million annually. After the surgical removal of his adrenal gland Nolan underwent 8 months of chemotherapy, fi nishing his treatments in January 2007.
In October 2008 Nolan had a reoccurrence. A mass in the lining of the chest cavity wall had been detected and Nolan and his family prepared for a second surgery. Nolan’s scans now showed no signs of cancer.
But Nolan’s fi ght was not over. In August 2009 it was discovered that Nolan was no longer in remission. The mass in the lining of his chest cavity had returned, and this time surgery was not an option. Nolan began a new treatment protocol, the only one that could help fi ght this type of cancer, but even with this, there was less than a 5% cure rate.
On July 28, 2011 Nolan had a great check-up. Two of the four spots in his chest cavity had disappeared.
“I don’t know many kids who wake up in the morning and say,
Mom can we go to the hospital? Obviously they are doing it right
at the Janeway. It is Nolan’s home away from home. Now that
he is doing well and spending less time at the Janeway, he misses
it and asks if he can go back for one more sleep. Nolan’s words
show us all how the Janeway is more than just a hospital.”

Donations at Work - Equipment
Donations at Work – The Janeway continues to ensure that its staff has the latest
advancements in medical technology, an important component in providing
excellence in health care.
As the latest in x-ray technology, Direct Digital Radiography (DDR) transmits patient
images directly to a computer imaging system, making them electronically available
to health care providers within minutes.
Providing far superior image quality than traditional x-rays, DDR greatly assists
radiologists in their diagnosis. Of equal importance is the decrease in time required
for the x-ray and the amount of radiation patients receive.
The ability to send digital images electronically to community hospitals throughout
the province also assists in making telediagnosis possible.
The DDR Suite at the Janeway Hospital improves patient experience, takes much
less valuable clinical space than traditional X-rays and provides our radiologists
with clearer images for diagnosis and research purposes.

Donations at Work - Research
Donations at Work – Without ongoing medical research advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and injuries would not be possible.
The Janeway, in affi liation with Memorial University, serves as a primary clinical resource for pediatric research. Almost every department within the Janeway Child Health Program now incorporates research into clinical care.
With the addition of the new Janeway Pediatric Research Unit (JPRU) the research needs of the Janeway will be served far into the future, enhancing and expanding pediatric clinical research programs by facilitating clinic trials, clinical studies and health services initiatives.
At this time there are over 50 active research projects underway at the JPRU covering a wide range of conditions and topics such as diabetes; breastfeeding; childhood obesity; arthritis; access to cancer drugs; pediatric Crohn’s disease; and seasonal variation of maternal vitamin D in Newfoundland.
“There are a number of unique aspects to the Newfoundland and
Labrador population which make it important for us to conduct medical
research locally. The research underway at the Janeway will help us
better understand the burdens of childhood diseases in our province
and hopefully lead to better outcomes in the future.”
Dr. Roger Chafe, DirectorJaneway Pediatric Research Unit
Dr. Leigh Anne Newhook, Pediatric Clinician and Researcher with Keana. Keana has
been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and is a participant in T1D Research.

Donations at Work - With the rapid advancements in scientifi c information and
technologies, continued education of health care professionals is essential in order
to provide safe, effective and high quality care.
The Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation continues to fund professional
development initiatives and staff educational bursaries, promoting improved clinical
knowledge and enhanced clinical practices.
During the past year the Janeway Foundation has received many worthy applicants
and have funded staff attendance to programs/ conferences in such areas as Child
Health Psychology; Speech Language Pathology for children with Autism Spectrum
Disorder; Advancements in Vaccines/ Immunization Practices; Childhood Cancer/
Pediatric Sarcomas and Obstetrics, just to name a few.
Lisa Sooley, RN (PICU) and Jane Mulcahy, RN (PICU) attended the Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit Nursing Course directly related to advanced level nursing for
critical care patients. The 10 day course covered topics in Respiratory Physiology;
Cardiology; Congenital Heart Defects; Renal Function and Failure; Neurology;
Infectious Disease; Pain Control and Oncology – followed by a written exam.
Upon completion, presentations of these courses are then made by the attendees
to their colleagues, helping to advance practices within the health care system.
“As Registered Nurses, Lisa and I are committed to a model of continuing competence through life-long learning.
We feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to travel to Montreal to participate in a two week intensive
Advanced Concepts PICU Course and to have worked with Registered Nurses from across Canada. Upon our return
we were able to share this knowledge with clients, colleagues, students and other health care professionals.”
