A Message from the Dean

Scholarship support for students from a wide range of backgrounds is both a university priority and a personal goal. Anyone who has been fortunate enough to receive educational support understands that such gifts are truly transformative. Scholarships also bring immense benefits to our entire community.

I am a former scholarship receipient, so my involvement with this campaign is deeply personal. The scholarship support I received provided educational opportunities that my parents never imagined for themselves. Without such support, I would not have been able to pursue an education that has led to a multifaceted career in scientific research, teaching, and public service. I am truly grateful for these opportunities and for the opportunity I now have to support the next generation of students through the Schaal-Leverich Family Scholarship.

In addition to helping exceptional students receive a world-class education, scholarships promote economic and social diversity. As an educator, I know how much a diverse campus community enhances the educational experience of all students. It is through encountering a rich variety of ideas and perspectives that our students will become leaders prepared to tackle the complex issues of our time.

I am very grateful to Carol and Jon for their philanthropy and leadership, and for establishing this important challenge in Arts & Sciences. I hope that their generosity will encourage you to increase your support for scholarships, distinguished faculty, and the exceptional learning opportunities that make Washington University one of the world’s leading centers of teaching and research.

Sincerely,

Barbara A. SchaalThe Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biology in Arts & Sciences Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences

About the Donor

Carol J. Epstein and her husband, Jon, have estab-lished a $200,000 challenge to support scholarships in Arts & Sciences, with the hope of inspiring

others to make their own impact on the lives of students.

After a successful and exciting career in fashion design, retail management, and historic restoration, Carol returned to her hometown of St. Louis. Several years later, her lifelong interest in continuing education drew her back to a classroom in Washington University’s University College. Before long, her academic curiosity developed into a real passion for learning, and in 2008, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Science in anthropology, a minor in ancient studies, and a Master of Liberal Arts with a thesis in Native American Repatriation. In 2014, she was awarded an Arts & Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award in recognition of her personal and academic accomplishments.

Carol supports many charitable causes, but has a long-standing commitment and devotion to animal rescue and humane education. She has personally fostered and rehabilitated countless homeless animals, whose lives have been the inspiration for the numerous children’s stories Carol has penned during her lifetime.

Jon, an accomplished businessman in the athletics footwear and apparel industry, was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and graduated from Boston University. Over the years, Jon has enthusiastically embraced Washington University, and, along with Carol, established the Carol J. Epstein University College Scholarship in 2007.

Carol and Jon continue their efforts to help Washington University maintain its status among the best universi-ties in the country. As a member of the Arts & Sciences National Council, Carol stays current on the activities and improvements of the university, while Jon serves as an advisor for the McDonnell International Scholars Academy. Carol also serves on the board of the Women’s Society of Washington University, and she is a selection committee member for the Jane and Whitney Harris St. Louis Community Service Award. The Epsteins enjoy their involvement in many aspects of university life and are Life Members of the William Greenleaf Eliot Society.
