A Message from the Dean

I want to take this opportunity to personally thankeach and every one of you for all that you havedone and continue to do for our School.Throughout the years your generosity has allowedus to provide scholarships to attract outstandingstudents, professorships and chairs to recruit gifted and dedicated faculty, state-of-the art facilities for

training our learners, and cutting-edge laboratories for ourresearchers whose work offers hope to our patients. As you arewell-aware the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleansprovides the vast majority of physicians for Louisiana. These arethe doctors that take care of your family and mine. Now anunprecedented budget crisis looms in our future—one that willseverely undermine our ability to train the next generation ofphysicians for Louisiana. If we are to continue to meet thechallenges that lie ahead and train the physicians and scientists of the future it is important that our voices be heard. As ourpopulation ages and the chronic disease burden of our patientsincreases due to our advancements in the treatment of manydiseases, society will look to us for answers. We need to beready.

Dr. Isidore Cohn, Jr.Dr. Isidore Cohn, Jr., Emeritus Chairman andProfessor of Surgery at the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA, died on October 14, 2015, after abrief illness at his home in Metairie, LA. He was 94.Raised in New Orleans and named for his father, whowas also a prominent surgeon, Dr. Cohn received hisMD and DSc degrees from the University ofPennsylvania, subsequently returning to the city of hisbirth to pursue a career in academic medicine. Afterjoining the LSU School of Medicine faculty in 1952,he succeeded his predecessor, James D. Rives, MD, aschairman of the Department of Surgery in 1962, andcontinued to hold that position for 27 years, one of the longest tenures in the annals of the profession.Concurrently serving as Surgeon-in-Chief of the LSUService at Charity Hospital, he was responsible forintroducing thousands of medical students to generalsurgery and directing the training of over 300 surgicalresidents.

In 1987, in recognition of his mentoring, a group offormer surgical residents funded the Isidore Cohn, Jr.,Professorship of Surgery, the first million-dollar chairat the LSU School of Medicine. In 2002, formersurgical residents and The James D. Rives SurgicalSociety (subsequently renamed the Isidore Cohn, Jr. –James D. Rives Surgical Society) were the majordonors for the Isidore Cohn, Jr., MD, StudentLearning Center, a state-of-the-art surgical trainingfacility at LSU School of Medicine.

Though the entirety of his professional career wasbased in New Orleans, the scope of his influence in the surgical profession extended well beyond Louisiana.He published 358 articles in peer-reviewed medicaljournals, and served as editor of ten, including TheAmerican Surgeon, Cancer, and The American Journal of Surgery. Dr. Cohn served as President of the NewOrleans Surgical Society (1967), the SurgicalAssociation of Louisiana (1968), the SoutheasternSurgical Congress (1972), the Southeastern CancerResearch Association (1975), and the SouthernSurgical Association (1982-1983); and as 1st VicePresident of the American College of Surgeons (1993). From 1975 - 1984, he served as director of theNational Pancreatic Cancer Project of the NationalInstitutes of Health (at the time, the largest publiclyfunded research project on the disease).

Dr. Cohn’s interest in and involvement with hisbeloved New Orleans community was deep andlifelong. He served on the Boards of the Greater New

Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau, theNew Orleans Museumof Art, TouroSynagogue, and theJewish EndowmentFoundation. In additionto these charities, he and his wife, Marianne, were significant contributorsto the Greater NewOrleans Foundation.

The significant honorsawarded to Dr. Cohninclude the FounderMedal from the Societyfor Surgery of theAlimentary Tract, the Spirit of Charity award from theMedical Center of Louisiana (2002), an honoraryDoctorate of Humane Letters from the University ofSouth Carolina (1995), Outstanding Alumnus fromthe Isidore Newman School (2003), the TzedakahAward from the Jewish Endowment Foundation ofLouisiana (2009), the Chairman’s Award from theArts Council of New Orleans (2012), and the IsaacDelgado Award from the New Orleans Museum ofArt, Honorary Alumnus, LSU School of Medicine(1989).

His fascination with Steuben glass led Dr. Cohn andhis wife to assemble one of the world’s leadingcollections, culminating in its exhibition at The NewOrleans Museum of Art (Crystal Clear, 2004). Chinese Jades from the Collection of Marianne and IsidoreCohn, Jr. was exhibited in 2013-2014.

Preceded in death by his sisters Elise Cohn Rosenthal(Robert) and Babette Cohn Golden (Abe), Dr.Cohn is survived by Marianne, his wife of almost 40 years;children from his first marriage (to the late JacquelineHeymann), Ian J. Cohn (Vicki) and Lauren Fouros,both of New York, NY; grandchildren Kevin A. Cohn(Karen) and Adrian K. Cohn (partner, SamanthaWolf), also of New York, NY; grandchildren AllisonMiller (Josh Murack) of St. Michael, MN, and JacobMiller of New Orleans, LA; and great-grandchildrenTeagan and Alexander Murack Miller. I am grateful for this opportunity to introduce myselfand the LSU Health Foundation New Orleans to you.Many of you already know who we are, as evidenced bythe three profiles on the following page. Several medical alumni have either served on our board of directors orare current board members. In 1988, Drs. Bob Danielsand Russell Klein had the vision and foresight to createan institutionally related 501(c)3 to support the LSUHealth Sciences Center. That is our singleresponsibility: to support the LSUHSC and its sixschools, eight Centers of Excellence and our sharedmission to provide the highest quality education,patient care, research and community outreachprograms possible.

We serve the School of Medicine in many ways. Ourdevelopment team actively collaborates with the Schoolof Medicine and the Medical Alumni Association to seek private gifts for education, patient care, research andcommunity outreach. At the most basic level, we

manage more than $108 million in restricted andendowed funds for the school and its faculty. Weacknowledge and steward private gifts, providevaluable tax information and above all, assure that allgifts are used as the donor intended.

We are gratified that our work supports such anexceptional school with such a noble mission. Weknow we could not do it without you, the alumni ofthe LSU School of Medicine, the bedrock of all ourefforts. Thank you for your years of generous supportand investment into your alma mater.

This LSU motto is telling — telling in not only how students and fans chooseto live life, yet the meaning of this motto runs deeper, perhaps deeper than even the author of the motto intended. It tells of a way of life. Living and loving. Achoice each of us makes each day. A dedication. When one is dedicated, one is devoted tospecial use, duty or purpose. Therein lies thedescription of my father, and of Tiger fanseverywhere. The comparison is natural andnecessary. I know of no other truer dedicationthan that of my father to his life’s calling. Andis it imaginable to know of any other realdedication than that of Tiger fans? Such adedication is indeed golden. This dedication istried and true, to be honored and revered. Itdoes not wane; it never wanders. I give you the description of my father.

My father, Alfred Daniel Lucius, Jr. (’61),embodies our motto, Live Purple, Love Gold. It is a given that he loves his Tigers, yet if degrees of love are possible, he holds and lives a greater love, that of a love for his work. LouisianaState University Medical School afforded myfather the opportunity to exemplify this love. This is his golden year; fifty yearsof taking care of patients and of bringing new life into this world through hisspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology, learned through seeds planted by hismentors and professors at LSU Medical School. He completed his medicalschool in New Orleans, then his residency in Shreveport. He continues toinspire colleagues, patients, and his family. He is now delivering a fourthgeneration. For his patients, there is no substitute. There is also no substitutefor the experience, expertise, knowledge, insight, discernment, value of humanlife, perspective, conviction and foundation from which my father operatesdaily. LSU Medical School can not only value, but lift up such alumni andalumnae as lights, as models, protocol, if you will, for its future graduates. Dear All,

Greetings on behalf of the Medical Alumni Office. It’sbeen another great year at the School of Medicine. Thenumber and quality of medical school applicants continueto increase every year. Our graduates are as competitiveand well-prepared as ever and match at premierinstitutions for residencies (including LSU programs, ofcourse).

We are now preparing for Reunion Weekend, which willbe held at our usual location, the New Orleans Riverside Hilton onFriday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4, 2016. This year we are recognizing the classes of: ‘51, ’55, ’56, ’61, ’62, ’66, ’71, ’76, ’81, ’86, ’91, ’96, ’01and ’06.

Our 11th Annual Purple and Gold Gala is scheduled for Saturday,November 12, 2016, and will be held for the first time at the World War II Pavilion. Save the date as we also celebrate the 85th Anniversary of the founding of the LSU-New Orleans School of Medicine. The Gala is agreat event and a good reason to spend a weekend in New Orleans withfamily and friends.
