A Message from our Pastor
Dear Parishioners, Each year, I try to pay a visit to Sr. Maria Goretti, a Franciscan Sister who was principal of the grade school I was privileged to attend in Sandusky, OH. Sr. Goretti is now 90 years old and peacefully retired at her motherhouse in Sylvania, OH, where she is lovingly cared for. Her short-term memory is greatly diminished, but she has many fond recollections of years past, particularly her years in Sandusky, the home of Cedar Point amusement park. Who wouldn’t have fond recollections of a city located on beautiful Lake Erie that has on its shores one of the largest
amusement parks in the world? My family grew up on this lake where my dad insisted all of us kids learn how to water ski. In the days when Sr. Goretti still wore a religious habit, she and several other nuns from her community would sometimes come to our home, where they could slip into something more comfortable and soak up the sun’s rays on our beach. On one momentous occasion, I coaxed Sr. Goretti into seeing whether her skill as a principal would spill over into an ability to get up on water skis. And it certainly did. I am not sure what surprised me more- that a nun would water ski with me, or that I, at least in this circumstance, would be her teacher and coach. Regardless, we had great fun.
It was Sister’s adventuresome spirit and zest for life that made her immensely popular with students and parents alike. Her energy was contagious, as was her religious faith that was a tremendous inspiration for me then and continues to be now, albeit very differently. She remembers very little from one moment to the next. In my latest and brief visit with her, she repeatedly asked if I had lunch yet, another indication of her concern for others. But each time I reminded her that I was a former student who had come to visit, she uttered the same exclamation – This is a miracle! A miracle? Why did she choose that metaphor for my visit? What did she believe a miracle was? An act of divine intervention? An interruption in the natural course of events by something sent from God? Or did she understand a miracle in the way the Bible does, that is, any kind of experience that causes wonder and awe. I would like to think it was the latter, because given Sister’s lack of short-term memory, she is intensely focused on the present moment. Not remembering what had occurred even minutes ago, everything for Sr. Goretti is a miracle – something that calls forth from her wonder and awe. Wouldn’t this be an incredible way to live life – always full of joyful surprise – seeing each and every incident as a
miracle – a sign of God’s abundance and inexhaustible grace?
This Wednesday we will celebrate the feast of the Incarnation – God taking on human flesh and saturating the world with his Divine Life. To believe this is to claim that everything is a miracle – something that evokes wonder and awe. Therefore, there can no longer be interruptions into the natural order of things, because the natural order has now become supernatural, permeated by God’s presence. As Sr. Goretti would proclaim, This is a miracle!
I realize that it is not possible for most of us to live with this continuous and scintillating excitement for life. We still struggle with brokenness and obsess about weakness and limitations. We suffer with physical infirmities and the gradual decline of our minds and bodies. We lament a world where peace is still waiting to be born, where honesty and right judgment are lacking and where strangers are often perceived with suspicion and fear. Hence, our need for Christmas, for a season (not a day) to remind ourselves that
My sister and I with Sr. Maria Goretti, OSF, (90) my
grade school principal for 8 years.

miracles are still possible, and are, in fact, unfolding in our midst if only we can purify our vision and, like Sr. Goretti, become overwhelmed by the power of the present moment. In this last visit with Sister, I was, once again, struck by the colorful splendor of her motherhouse chapel, especially the stained glass windows that celebrate creation and incarnation. In true Franciscan spirit, these artistic masterpieces depict the world of nature as they quote the canticle from the Old Testament Book of Daniel (3:57-88). I share them as part of my Christmas message because, in the language of beauty, they reveal miracles.
May God bless all of us in this miraculous time of Christmas. Blessings,
“Bless the Lord all you works of the Lord.”

The Proclamation of the Birth of Christ
The Solemn Liturgy of Christmas (celebrated at our 10pm Mass) includes ‘The Proclamation of the Birth of Christ’. What exactly is this chant that is sung to begin the Christmas Season? “The Roman Martyrology for Christmas Day contains a formal announcement of the birth of Christ in the style of a proclamation. It begins with creation and relates the birth of the Lord to the major events and personages of sacred and secular history. The particular events con-tained in the proclamation help to situate the birth of Jesus in the context of salvation history.” (from 2018 Sourcebook for Sundays and Seasons, printed by Liturgy Training Publications). We sing this chant to remind us of God’s saving plan, and how He has always saved His people throughout history. Through the story told in this chant, we can see the plan of God emerging through all ages. We also see how the birth of Christ fits into the sacred and secular events of that particular period in time.
