The Goodwood Community Bendigo Bank funded this fantastic resource for our community. It's one of those things you hope is never needed, but it's good to know it is there, just in case. Despite the rain it was a very successful morning, organised by the Goodwood Business Association. Some of our student public relations team created the banner, promoting our village, that is on our fence. On May 25 St Johns Ambulance SA held demonstrations, Tabor College sang in the rain and the Heart Foundation were represented by our students and one of our parents, Dr Natasha Schranz. Inside the Happy Heart is one of our students, Mackenzie Schranz, she did an awesome job! Of course these Saturday events wouldn't happen without the backing of the Goodwood Road businesses and our families joining in. Congrats to all! Congratulations to Hugo I am always very excited about our students active involvement in so many varied and exciting events across our community and state. Last week one of our students made the Advertiser News and what a good news story it was… Hugo was selected to read the book Alpacas with Maracas by Matt Cosgrove for the DreamBIG Festival opening event. Hugo has provided us an article in this newsletter about his experience. Cohen McRae is also performing this month at the South Australian Primary Schools Choir Concert. There is an advert for this event in this newsletter.

Deb’s Message Continued ...

Out of School Hours Sports It is always great to see our students engaging with after school hours sports. Over half of our student population represent our school in a

range of sports. Thanks goes to all of our parents who give up their time to support our students. Here is one of our younger netball teams practicing before school.

Pop Up Nature Play at the Goody Patch for children under 5 years Parents and children can attend this event on the first Wednesday of the month 9:30-11am. Many thanks to Alia Lovecroft, who has led this initiative. Thanks to our Goody Patch Gardeners who have supported her.

Student Passion Projects benefit our local children and those needing support globally Initiative is our middle name!! Students across the whole school often organise activities that benefit their fellow students and people in the world, not as lucky as us. Here are some students who have coordinated a lunch time comic club where kids draw and write comic strips.

Last Monday I had the pleasure of supervising some older students run a bake sale. They were raising money for the Bright Futures Charity. Bright Futures mission is to improve lives in Nepal by empowering women and children through quality healthcare and education. They raised $286, a huge effort, congratulations! Kind regards

Deb Brassington , Principal

This term, you will be receiving a report in a new format for your child. There are two examples in this newsletter for you to view. If your child is in a Reception class, they will have a report focusing on their level of effort. If your child is in a Year 1 – 7 class, they will receive effort and achievement grades. You will notice that there is only one space for a written comment. This is because our staff have decided to share information about your child’s progress with you more regularly and with a focus on their next steps in learning. This is shared throughout the school year when your child has been formatively assessed, which means that this activity has not been assigned a grade. In these instances, the focus of the assessment is to see how your child is achieving in relation to a learning intention and for them to be able to share their next steps in learning with you. We want you to be able to know what they need to do next to be successful and not have to wait until the end of the semester in a traditional report format. Our aim is that this continuous and timely

information will promote targeted ongoing learning for your child both at home and at school.

Student News from Hugo

I was lucky to be chosen to take part in the Opening event for the 2019 DreamBIG Festival which was held at Adelaide Oval. At the event I read the book Alpacas with Maracas by Matt Cosgrove for the National Simultaneous Storytime in front of more than 2000 schoolkids. This was an event where all around Australia, schools would read the same book. The DreamBIG Festival is the big-

gest children festival in the world, and it gives the opportunity for young people to get involved with the arts through Dance, Music and Acting. One of the highlights of this experience was that I got to hang out with alpacas Taco and Alfie for the Advertiser. Did you know Alfie the Alpaca has more than 300,000 followers on social media? I am extremely grateful for this experience and I en-courage any young kids who are interested in the arts to get involved.

Specialist Teachers Term Overviews

Italian Term Overview Another term in Italian! In term 1, we were focusing on getting ourselves firmly established in Italian with a focus on the fundamental mechanics of the language. This term,

we’re now taking what we’ve learned and applying it in our communication! Our focus has been about being able to describe and talk about ourselves; from here, we’ll be looking to describe and discuss others, as well. As our vocabulary expands further, we’ll start exploring how to hold basic conversations in Italian! I’ve also been preparing tutorial videos for students to follow, should they require extra assistance understanding the concepts we’ve covered. In addition, I’m now holding drop-in sessions at Tuesday lunchtimes for students that need any extra help with their Italian work!

Performing Arts Term Overview

Performing Arts Overview with Katie Daly Literacy in Drama

Reception – Year 2 Students will explore using their bodies and voices to create objects and living things through imitation, improvisation and storytelling. Year 3-5 Students will learn how to create characters, scenes and scenarios in studying the Elements of a Story. Activities will be based on building confidence and understanding in improvising characters and creating scripts. Year 6/7 Students will focus on Musical Theatre this term to further their knowledge and understanding of presenting a story in Drama. Students will be creating and presenting short scenes created in a Musical Theatre style, incorporating – dramatic performance, music and choreographed movement. I look forward to a great Term 2 of making and creating in the Arts!

Performing Arts Overview with Kate White The Arts draws together related art forms, developing students’ creativity and skills through making and responding to artworks and considering multiple viewpoints. This can involve students making and responding to artworks using materials, techniques and technologies from one Arts subject to support learning in another. 16N - Music

Students will discover and experience the Elements of Music and meet the instruments of the Orchestra. They will be able to identify instruments by name and family and be able to create examples of the Elements of Music. 14N – Music and Film Students will research, explore and experiment with how music communicates emotions, feelings and stories. They will work with music to intensify and communicate emotion in film. They will explore the Elements of Music and select music to underscore short scenes to demonstrate the effect of music in conveying the possible stories. 18N – School of Fish This term we will explore the ocean through dance. A school of fish moves together in exactly the same way, at exactly the same time. We will explore what it looks and feels like to be part of a school of fish as we go on an underwater adventure using drama and dance techniques. We will extend this into creating our own dance moves as creatures from under the sea and finish by combining this into a class dance.

8M & 6M – Drama and Media Arts Students will explore storytelling through Media Arts. They will develop understanding of character through voice and movement and extend their understanding of the of use language and ideas to create dramatic action and consider mood and atmosphere in performance. Students will develop their use of structure, intent, character and settings by incorporating points of view and genre conventions in their compositions. 6M will explore Stop Motion Animation and iMovie to recreate a scene from a movie or book. They will develop storyboards and plan their filming. As a class they will develop goals and skills to build over the term and design ways to show this learning in a completed piece of media. 8M will create and record Radio Plays. They will create and develop scripts and explore the use of sounds to enhance a performance. We will develop performance skills using voice and sound effects to create a play for radio. As a class they will

develop and identify success criteria to create a class rubric.

Talk for Writing 17N…..

Hook Children's Interest! As part of our Talk for Writing focus it is important we provide Hooks to generate children's interest. This supports activation of children's imagination and creativity when talking about experiences and writing creatively. 17N had Animals Anonymous visit and you can see by the children's faces there certainly was some engaged thinking! The children in 17N used the story book Dear Zoo also, as a stimulus for their writing and they presented at assembly. Dear Zoo.

They sent me a lion. But he was too scary. Audrey Dear Zoo. They sent me a snake, but it was too loud. I sent him back. Thomas
