By the time you read this, all four vision teams will have met for the first time. It’s been exhilarating to be part of this process! The teams that have met so far have done a phenomenal job of identifying ministries that the church is in-volved in and determining how each of those ministries helps move people along on their journey of discipleship. I’m excited for the second round of meetings, be-

ginning with Christian Education on May 3rd.

Some of the highlights for me so far include:

Each group has identified more than fifty different ministries that the church participates in, from worship services to God’s Storehouse to the Mexico Mission Trip to ushers and greeters for worship. There is truly at least one

way that every person can be involved in ministry.

While I have convened each of the meetings, from the outset this hasn’t been “my project”. The members of the church have taken responsibility for generating ideas and actions. I’m proud to be the pastor of a church where the members are ready and willing to step up and into leadership roles,

challenging themselves to move into God’s future!

The groups are not afraid of change. Of course none of us really like change. Anytime there is change, we grieve some for what is lost. But we all know that there are moments when change is necessary. The question becomes whether or not we have the courage to make the changes that God wants us to make. I think the people who have been involved do have that kind of

courage.

Another word about change – change will be coming for this church. I don’t just mean the change in pastor. We’ve been changing the whole four years I’ve been here – adding a service, upgrading the nursery, changing the order of

worship, and the way that we manage committees, are just some of them.

More change lies ahead. I hope that when the time comes to vote on the recommendations made by the Vision Teams and the Incubator Team that you will remember this. In Ecclesiastes we’re told that there is a season for everything. As a country, a world, and the church universal, we are in a season of change. I hope that Burlington UMC will continue to be a church that is unafraid of change, while

holding on to what is most essential from the past.

The UMW met April 13th at 1:30 pm. We’ve been look-ing for a better day to meet,

and Tuesday may be the day.

We had a lesson on quotes about love from the Gospel of John. We discussed the read-ing list and reviewed March’s Response magazine which was full of children’s experiences world-wide. We closed with

the prayer calendar.

I attended the Five Rivers District meeting on April 17. Certificates of completion of programs were passed out. Col-lection taken was $417. We had many song sessions and a program of sign language. Prayer shawls and book bags were collected to be taken to

Assembly in St. Louis.

Have you noticed the newly painted stripes in our parking lots? Our

thanks goes to John Chanley for his much-appreciated work!

The Livingston Family extends their appreciation to those who have

provided food, care, and concern while Tracy recovers from her back injury.

The Madelyn Fitch Memorial Music Fund Task Force has been meeting to organize recommendations made to the Administrative Council regarding the money left to the church by Ms. Fitch. Members of this task force include Chair Judy Stukey, Roy Rodgers, Mary Holloway, Mark Pet-terson, Dave Wilkens, Ken Hall, Pastor David Livingston, and Glenda Jones. We appreciate the time these individuals have given to develop their

recommendations and report.

The bench at the front of the church is repaired! Thank you, Gene

Merry, for Sharing God’s Love by beautifying our entrance!

May registration dates at the church for Angelfood participation are: Sunday, May 2 at 11:30 am; Tuesday, May 4, 11 am-1 pm; Wednesday, May 5, 5-7 pm. Please note the Sunday registration is a week early due to

Mother’s Day. Pick-up will be at 9:30 am on Saturday, May 22.

This is the fifth article in our new “Getting to Know our Members” section which shares information that some

of you may not have had time to learn about each other during our brief visits before and after worship.

If you would like to be contacted for a short visit to share information (hobbies, background information, church

memories, anything that would help others better know you), please call Susan Croll, Fellowship Chair, at 364-9233 to

schedule a time to meet. Articles will be published only with members’ permission. Susan may be contacting you!

If you want to see smiles that light up a room, spend some time with the Thompsons! They are a fun and loving family with a bright future ahead of

them. They are also K-State fans, so I have taken to them immediately.

Matt is originally from Camden Point, MO, but had a grandmother from Lyon County where he moved his junior year of high school. He met up with Nancy (Allen, KS) their senior year at Northern Heights. Matt also has another connection to our area…Torchy Duncan, a member of our church, is his aunt. After high school, Matt worked and Nancy attended Brown Mackie College in Salina to refine her business skills. In June of 1992, they were mar-ried in Emporia. Nancy worked as the secretary of First Methodist Church in Emporia, and Matt worked for Big Lakes in Manhattan. They then moved to Manhattan for 6 years and Nancy was the secretary for the Methodist church there. After a couple more moves that include Allen KS, Gardner KS, working in an architecture firm for Nancy, working at Lyon County Jail and Pottawato-mie County Sheriff’s Deputy for Matt, they have become people of many

trades and helpful to any community in which they reside.

Matt became interested in law enforcement with his work at the jail and with the sheriff, so he attended the Kansas Law Enforcement Academy in Yoder to receive his training to become a patrolman, and thankfully for us, in August of 2008, the Thompsons decided to make their home in Burlington. They bring with them two adorable girls, Meghan and Courtney, who are absolutely delightful and give the best hugs ever! Meghan, 11, the more structured of the two, enjoys softball and karate. Courtney, 7, more foot-loose and fancy free, enjoys bowling and visiting with her neighbor and friend Calvin Freeman. They both are actively involved in church and girl scouts; love to play at the park together, read books, roller skate, and keep their parents on their toes! They are wonder-

fully bright students at BES, and are looking forward to spending their years in the Burlington schools.

When not spending time with the girls or working, Matt and Nancy have to stop and think about what they like to do with their limited and precious free time. They enjoy Frisbee golf, but Coffey County has yet to add that to their recreation list. (Does Gene Merry need another project?) Nancy has been employed as the director of ac-counting at Flint Hills Community College in Emporia since 2000, so while she’s not commuting, she enjoys read-ing, watching movies, and walking/exercising. Her favorite activity though, is being with Meghan and Courtney. She also volunteers her time as treasurer of the Parent Support Group, teaches Sunday school, plays keyboard for the BUMC Praise Band, and is a part of the Incubator team. Matt‘s schedule is often the opposite of his family with his security work at American Eagle in Ottawa, so he treasures his time with them whenever he can get it. Otherwise, he enjoys working on the computer, target shooting, and finding extra time to catch up on sleep. Their home is also keeping him occupied with plenty of remodeling projects. Fortunately, Matt was trained at a young age by his father to be an excellent woodworker. For those of you wanting to hire him for unfinished projects at

your house, sorry, there is no time left in his schedule!

Thank you again, Thompsons, for giving us the opportunity to get to know you better. You are a delightful family,

and a true asset to our church and community!

Respectfully Submitted,

Susan Croll, Fellowship Chair

CHRISTIA EDUCATIO EWS

FROM DIRECTOR SAA ALFERS This school year is quickly coming to an end and summer plans are on the way. The last day of regular Sunday school will be on May 23rd. We will have a teacher appreciation time at church on that day. We want to thank all the Sunday school teachers and children’s church helpers for their help in making this a successful

year. Your help is greatly appreciated! Thank you all!

We are planning on having one room Sunday school in the summer time starting on June 6th. We will be going into space by using the Galactic

Blast VBS material. It will be a cosmic adventure praising God! Through daily missions, the children will see space like never before and gain a new perspective on our planet Earth. Keeping it clean is such an important concept, so we will even learn some easy "green" earth tips they can practice at home. It

will be great! I hope you will join us!

If you would like to help with summer Sunday school let Sanna know! We will not have Sunday school on the major holidays of the summer – May

30th (Memorial Day), July 4th, and Sept. 5th (Labor Day).

Vacation Bible school will be July 11-15th from 6-8 pm. It will be great again this year. We will be traveling to Egypt. The theme for VBS this year is Joseph’s Journey from Prison to Palace. It is a con-

tinuation of the Holy Land Adventure VBS that we have grown to love!

The children will get to experience life in Egypt and make the story of Joseph come to life in their very own eyes. The children will take part in pyramid games, shop at the market place, and go along Joseph’s journey each day. If you would like to help, please let Sanna know. There will be a VBS potluck on Monday, May 24th at 6:00pm. It will be a VBS training

also, so please mark it on your calendar.

The B.I.G. Club will have a potluck picnic in May 19th. We will walk to Kelley Park and grill hotdogs and hamburgers. We will eat around 5:00 so we hope you will come. We are celebrating a fun year of after

school activities. Come and join us!

Last, we are collecting money in Sunday school for the Project Heifer. We are saving money to buy animals to be given to families all over the world. We are starting by collecting money to buy a flock of chicks. It is only $20 and will provide life-sustaining eggs to people who desperately need them. The chil-dren will be able to decide what we want to collect next. The gifts vary from $20 chicks and geese to $60 bunnies to $120 sheep to $500 heifers. Parents, help the students collect money for this worthwhile cause. We have almost met our first

goal!

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your

support of BUMC Christian education!

Six youth participated in confirmation class which culminated with their joining BUMC on April 11 at 10:30 service. The students are: Tyler Burrell, McKinnon Burns, Alexandra Fiedler, Raini Glades, Makalia Palmer, and Deana Pearson. “The students were particularly faithful in Wednesday night atten-dance and the enthusiastic discussions led to lots of insights and learning,” In-structor Kay Scott commented. “These youth took the responsibility of claiming the name ‘Christian’ for themselves and the church enjoyed celebrating with them by sharing cake and punch in Fellowship Hall.” Instructor Bev Yokum explained that the youth created felt stoles, adding a handmade symbol each week to coincide with the lesson theme. On Confirmation Sunday the youth were presented with their stole and a new Bible. Instructors Kay Scott, Bev Yokum, and Pastor David met with the group weekly and participated in two retreats. The most recent was held at Jones Cabin April 16-17. “A special thanks goes to Lane Jones for the extra time he spent in preparing the cabin for our retreat. It is always fun and adventuresome to stay there,” Kay said. The fall retreat included chili and pie baking at the Scott's. It was combined with helping serve the Turkey-Ham Dinner. Another part of their confirmation experience was meeting with mentors throughout the confirmation process. “All the instructors want to thank the mentors and par-ents who helped support the youth by sharing their faith journey,” Kay added.

On April 25, Justin and Jenn Lowrey joined the BUMC family, and their one-year-old daughter Briar was baptized. Justin transferred his membership from the Wamego Methodist Church. Jenn transferred from

Parkfiew Mennonite Brethren.

Jenn serves as our Youth Director and Justin is an engineer

P a g e 8 SPECIAL CHURCH COFERECE

AOUCED

Rev. Dennis Ackerman, our current District Superintendent, has approved a special Church Conference to be held Sunday May 23 at 11:45 a.m. The purpose of the meeting will be to take action on the Madelyn Fitch Music Task Force proposal for use of the Madelyn Fitch portion of the Duane Fitch Estate and to ap-prove candidates for Lay Speaker. A Lay Speaker is a volunteer who feels called to and is trained for preach-ing occasionally in the pulpit. The proposal for administration of the Madelyn Fitch Music Fund is printed below and also available in the church office.

REPORT OF THE MADELY' FITCH MEMORIAL MUSIC FU'D TASK FORCE

TO THE ADMI'ISTRATIVE COU'CIL OF BURLI'GTO' UMC

The following report represents the bulk of investigations, discussions and actions recommended from this task force. Judy

Stukey was selected as the Chairperson. The Task Force met four times and arrived at the following recommendations:

1. Monies specifically left to the church to establish the Madelyn Fitch Music Fund should remain intact as a separate line item of the portfolio of Burlington UMC. Interest earned should be placed in an account available to carry on the developing programs, neces-

sary minor repairs, general maintenance and minor purchases.

Task Force recommends— $105,000 be placed in CDs (principle)

Balance of Memorial + accrued interest placed in available account for immediate or near future disbursement

Use of principle may happen only with approval of Church Conference.

2. The Burlington UMC establish an ongoing committee specifically to make recommendations concerning the use of the Madelyn

Fitch Memorial Funds. A minimum three member committee be established built on three year staggered terms for continuity.

Duties or activities of this committee could possibly include the following:

A. Establish maintenance schedules for musical instruments and do follow-up on suggested changes or additions to heighten

their use and useful life.

B. Develop a continuing education program for music staff.

C. Develop programs to improve or correct deficiencies in our music services. i.e., Substitute organist, Pianist, Sound Sys-

tem Specialist, etc.

D. Develop a program to support financially, persons of our church wishing to develop or expand their musical talents.

E. Expand and improve music library.

F. To carry out the administrative duties assigned by the Church Council after adoption of recommendations.

3. There are three areas of concern needing addressed immediately.

A. The status of the Chancel Organ was questioned immediately at the first Task Force meeting. The group felt we needed to know the condition of the organ and whether a large amount of money would be needed to bring it back into proper condition. The Reuter Organ Company was contacted and asked to make an inspection. The following is a portion of their oral report to Chairman Judy. “There is some warping of pipes caused by an inferior metal used in the construction of the pipes. This will not affect the sound and we do not need to replace any pipes. Other parts (like the leathers) are in reasonable shape and may need to be replaced in 3-7 years at a cost of about $1000. Reuters have the complete file of everything that has ever been done to the organ except tuning. We find the organ in fairly good shape. By accepting an oral report, there will be no charge for this inspection.” The Task Force recom-

mends only a general maintenance for now.

B. The Task Force recommends an Acoustics Engineer be hired to check the acoustics of our sanctuary particularly since all musical performances come from the front of the church. Our Trustees had checked out certain problems associated with the choir

loft recently.

C. The piano in the basement is moved on a regular basis. Each time this type of instrument is moved, it should be retuned. To help alleviate this problem and make it more easily moved without affecting the tuning, the Task Force recommends the purchase

of a carrier platform to be put under the basement piano immediately with available funds.

Several other areas of music worship and performance were discussed but not acted on by this Task Force. Some of these were the reestablishing of a bell choir, more emphasis on youth choirs, further research as to arrangement at front of church, and de-

velopment of a choir practice room (rehearsal room) plus several inquiries of other matters.

The Task Force submits this report and feels it has completed the task assigned. Members of Task Force: Chair Judy Stukey, Roy

Rodgers, Mary Holloway, Mark Petterson, Dave Wilkens, Ken Hall, Pastor David Livingston, Glenda Jones.

Designated blankets are labeled with the person needing prayer’s name and sometimes their prayer re-quest. Some blankets are present in the narthex, undes-ignated for specific individuals, which are then taken to

someone in need as that need arises.

The church’s emblem is embroidered on the blanket along with an iron-on encouraging note and Scripture. Please remember to tie a knot and say a
