Chamber Membership is Effective Business Strategy A recent national survey of 2,000 adults conducted byTheSchapiroGroup, anAtlanta-based strategic consulting firm,revealsthatbeingactiveinalocalchamberofcommerceisaneffectivebusinessstrategybecausetwo-thirdsofconsumersbelievethatsuchcompaniesusegoodbusinesspractices,arereputable,careabouttheircustomers,andareinvolvedinthecommunity.

Theseperceptionsareespecially important forsmallbusinessesastheyrepresentthe largestsegmentofmost localchambermembershiprolls,andthestudyindicatesthatchambermembershiphasconsistentandpowerfulbenefitsforsmallbusinessmembers—ifconsumersareawarethatthesmallbusinessisinvolvedwithitslocalchamber.Forexample,ifrespondentsknowthatasmallbusinessisamemberofitslocalchamber,thebusinessenjoysa49%increaseinitsconsumerfavorabilityrating,a73%increaseinconsumerawareness,a68%increaseinitslocalreputation,andan80%increaseinthelikelihoodthatconsumerswillpatronizethebusinessinthefuture.

The key factor in developing andmaintaining positive consumer perception of chambermembers, the SchapiroGroupsaid,wasthat“positiveoutcomesonlyoccurwhenconsumersknowthatabusinessisachambermember(i.e.beinginvolvedinthechamberisaknownfacetofthecompany’sreputation.)”

Accordingly,when consumers know that a large business is amember of the chamber, they are likely to patronize thecompanymoreoften,toexpressfavorableopinionsaboutthecompany,toknowmoreaboutthecompany,andtobuythecompany’sproducts.Thestrengthandnatureoftheseeffectsdifferbyindustryasshowninthefollowingbusinesscategories.

LargeRestaurantChains-Whenconsumersknowthatarestaurantfranchiseisamemberofthechamberofcommerce,theyare15%morelikelytoreportknowingalotaboutthefranchise,58%morelikelytoeatatthefranchisemoreoften,68%morelikelytoeatatthefranchiseinthenextfewmonths,and37%morelikelytothinkfavorablyofthefranchise.

InsuranceCompanies-Whenconsumersknowthataninsurancecompanyisamemberofthechamberofcommerce,theyare29%morelikelytoreportknowingalotaboutthecompany,36%morelikelytothinkfavorablyofthecompany,and36%morelikelytoconsiderbuyinginsurancefromit.

AutomobileManufacturers -Among thosewho have ever considered buying a car froma particular automanufacturer,chambermembershipleadstoa44%increaseinconsumers’likelihoodofpurchasingacarthereinthefuture.

Thestudy,commissionedby theAmericanChamberofCommerceExecutives (ACCE), incooperationwith theWesternAssociationofChamberExecutives,wassponsoredby Insperity,aHouston-basedcompany thatprovideshuman resourcesandotherbusinessservicestomorethan100,000businessesnationwide.J.MacHolladay,founderandCEOofMarketStreetServices,aneconomicdevelopmentfirminAtlanta,wasakeycontributorofconceptsusedtodevelopthestudy.

ThenewstudytrackssimilardatareportedbyTheSchapiroGroupin2007.“Despitechangesinmarketsanddemographics,anaggingrecessionandthegrowinginfluenceoftheinternet,thechamberbrandtodayisstrongerandmoredynamicthanever,”saidACCEPresidentMickFleming.“We’reproudthatthenumbersprove,onceagain,thatengagementinachambermeansapositiveperceptionofthebusinessintheeyesofthebuyingpublic.”
