SAINT LUCIA SET TO HOST MAJOR INTERNATIONAL SPORT CONFERENCE
“An annual Caribbean forum for change, which fosters input directly from youth, policy makers, sports tourism stakeholders, sportsmen and women, educators and corporate interests”
The Ministry of Youth Development and Sport in Saint Lucia, is pleased to be able to partner with the Sacred Sports Foundation and George Mason University as Saint Lucia plays host to the first annual Sport in Black & White Conference and Youth Forum. The event which is designated the 3rd Sport and the Global South International Conference will take place over five days between June 10th-14th , 2013 at the Beausejour Indoor Arena in Gros Islet.
The conference will bring together a diverse range of actors in regional sport and sports leaders from the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, Asia and the United States to collectively focus on tackling youth and sport related challenges, our region’s sporting heritage, its social and sporting development. This event will provide an incredible opportunity to promote sport as a foundation for many positive changes.
The Caribbean is the perfect venue to host this prestigious event where some of the most recognized faces in sport hail from. Saint Lucia in particular presents an excellent venue and in addition to its sporting heroes it is also the home of Nobel Laureates Sir Arthur Lewis and Derek Walcott, two of the world’s most prominent figures in Economics and Literature.
We are confident that the conference will become a significant event in our regions sporting calendar and I truly hope you will be a part of it by joining us in Saint Lucia.
It will be our honor to welcome you and your delegation.
Sincerely
Fortuna Belrose Permanent Secretary (Ag)
.
I am proud to say as the Sacred Sports Foundation Chairman, the organisation founded by my late brother Keith Alexander, that he had the character to enact change. His struggles as a player and coach to both be successful and retain his own identity, helped build a fiercely intelligent character, with great wit and tremendous humility and determination. His success as one of the first black football professional managers in the English game is a testament to his spirit and ability to rise above even the most shocking cultural and racial challenges. Keith was passionate about the potential for sport and physical activity in the Caribbean and actively worked to ensure that the power of sport is utilised positively. That is why we hope to be an active catalyst for change. It is my distinct pleasure to announce that during June 10th-14th 2013, Saint Lucia will play host to a major new initiative, the Sport in Black & White Conference and Youth Forum. Designated as the 3rd Sport and the Global South International Conference, the event will bring together leaders in the fields of sport and youth development to tackle and debate a range of pressing issues for the first time in the Caribbean at the Beausejour Indoor Arena in Saint Lucia. The Conference will identify priorities with respect to key approaches to sport as a development and performance tool, focusing on social inclusion, diversity and health and well being. It will provide critical guidance on a wide range of topics from discrimination, what sports can offer as an export opportunity-a nexus between sport & international economics, the prevention of injury, fitness and nutrition, elite performance, the protection of youth and the power of sport and physical activity as a social and positive developmental tool for change. We will also look at citizen security issues and youth leadership training using sport and physical activity. Presented by specialists in the field, the Conference will bring together sporting and physical activity interests from all over the world for the sustainability and development of a network to help foster co-operation. This conference will provide a review of action items already underway, monitor current developments and drive innovation in the planning of future priorities. Set in a politically neutral environment, this is a unique opportunity. Influential decision-makers, high profile opinion leaders, international organisations, clubs, associations, NGO’s and the private sector , plus academics and top level athletes and educators will all gather solely to talk sport and physical activity for development. After the Conference our youth soccer tournament, scholarship college showcase and coaching certification courses will start. Open exclusively to Caribbean youth from all Islands, we invite you to send your teams, coaches and best players to participate where top agents, officials, scouts & talent evaluators will gather. Come and join us at Sport in Black & White Conference and Youth Forum, where we will work together on changing those practices that have disempowered participants in the most socially life affirming activity there is SPORT! In an effort to make the conference as accessible as possible, reduced airfare and accommodation packages have been negotiated in readiness for your arrival. More details attached. We look forward to welcoming you and your delegation.
Yours Sincerely,
Delroy Alexander, Chairman -Sacred Sports Foundation Inc

Sacred Sports Foundation is the realisation of a lifelong dream to build a sustainable future for
ourselves and our families, while giving back to local communities. The Foundation is a legally
registered not for profit charity – economically, politically independent non denominational
organisation based in Saint Lucia, West Indies.
We are one of the few sports-based charities in the Caribbean that works to increase opportunity
and social inclusion for Caribbean youth primarily between the ages of 6-23. We also act as a
bridge between sports tourism promotion and youth development. The nexus between the two is of
critical importance especially in terms of confronting some of the challenges faced by our youth.
We are a relatively young, innovative, driven organisation, determined to help change the fortunes
of our most disadvantaged youth. And we are proud of our inclusive approach, strong community
links and market leading implementation and management skills. That’s why the EU funded us in
2009 to produce a national sports coaching development programme for the Government of Saint
Lucia.
As well as having partnered with Caribbean Governments, stakeholders and social agencies, the
Foundation has also signed a three year agreement with Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE)
and secured important grants from DIGICEL, UNESCO and the Australian Government among
others. We also act as a bridge between sports tourism promotion and youth development.
