A Lutheran Congregation in Mission for Christ JANUARY 2017 Volume 88 No. 1 From Pastor Waters’ Pen: The New Year has begun, and it brings a new chance to walk with the Lord. If you’re not already reading the Bible every day, start now and make it a New Year’s resolution. We’ll be preaching our way through the Gospel of Matthew this year. Make the Sunday lesson come to life by reading through Matthew yourself. You can even do your devotions on your phone by downloading the NALC Walk of Faith from the app store. This New Year we’ll start a new service at St. John. Our Praise Service will be Sundays at 10:30 in the Family Life Center. We’ll blend Lutheran liturgy and contemporary Christian music to create a warm, upbeat atmosphere for people to worship Jesus. We’ve already hired our Praise Music Director and Assistant and are hoping to launch the service in March. I know there’s a lot of questions, so I’ll be holding a Town Hall meeting Sunday, January 15 th , 9:15-10:15 a.m. in the Family Life Center. Come and learn more about this exciting new opportunity to reach new people in Boerne. Speaking of new opportunities, Michelle and I are very excited about the class that we’ll be teaching together on Wednesday nights 7-8 p.m. starting January 8 th . It’s called Faith@Home, and it’s based on a book Michelle wrote about creating a distinctly Christian culture in the home and leaving a legacy of faith for future generations. We invite parents, grandparents, newlyweds, and seasoned couples to come and help each other help our families walk with the Lord. Michelle is also part of the teaching team at the Women’s Retreat January 27-29 th . While she’s at Camp Chrysalis, teaching about “Identity…Created, Called Gifted,” I’ll be at home trying to put Faith@Home into practice! The New Year brings new opportunities to walk with Jesus and draw closer to the Lord. I look forward to walking them with you. Let’s see where God leads us in this year to come. Pastor Waters

Final Thoughts

There is one final thought I would like to share with you as I step down as president of the council.

Several years ago, I purchased the book, Being George Washington, by Glenn Beck. I put it on my

shelf planning to read it at some point in time in the future.

Years passed and in early 2016, I finally took it down and read it. It was quite good. If you ever

had any uncertainties regarding the Lord’s hand in the making of our nation, this book will re-

move all doubts.

There is a quote in the book that I found very inspirational, especially during the turmoil the con-

gregation, council and call committee experienced in 2016. Please indulge me while I share this

with you:

Everything that we do in life – every battle that we fight and every mountain that we

climb, no matter how many times that we may fall – may be for no other purpose

than to prepare us for that moment when we are called upon to make a difference in

this world.

In fact, every decision that we make, even those that seem small and irrelevant –

perhaps especially those that seem small and irrelevant – may be moving us toward

that moment when we can change a life for the better.

We may only get one chance to make a difference. But there is no doubt that such a

moment in each of our lives is going to come.

The only question that really matters is, Will we be ready for it?

That time in life may be big or it may be small but nevertheless, it has the potential for a big im-

pact. It may be as a parent, teacher, mentor, church council member, community leader, or in wit-

ness for our Lord. What really matters is, will you be ready for it? With faith and trust in our

Heavenly Father, you will be, “for all things are possible with God.” Matthew 10:27.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you, St. John and our Lord and Master.

Your Humble Servant in Christ,

Don Baker

From Faith to Action

"After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusa-lem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 9bthey went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their

treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. " (Matthew 2:1-11) The Wise Men came “from the east” and followed a star so that they could worship the newborn King. Realize that they weren’t blessed with the full light of scripture that is available to us today. They didn’t fully understand that this baby ultimately would be our Savior. Nevertheless, they put their faith into action and made the long journey to present gifts to Christ. This can serve as an example to us as we go through our daily lives. We have the benefit of knowing the rest of the story. We know that this child was God in the flesh. We know that He lived a sinless life and gave Himself up as a perfect sacrifice to atone for our sins. We know that He conquered death so that we may have eternal life. We know that He has gone to heaven to prepare a place for us. We know that He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Shouldn’t we be eager to come and worship? Overjoyed to bring our gifts to the same Jesus that the Maji travelled so far to see that first Christmas? We should rejoice that we are baptized children of God and fellow believers in Christ. How blessed we are! Your Brother in Christ Kyle Gass, Chair, St John Lutheran Stewardship Committee

Baby Booties and Hats Needed

Volunteer Marcy Stehling has headed up HCPCC’s Baby Booties and Cap ministry for the past 5 years. She faithfully makes these beautiful items for our new moms. Each newly pregnant mom receives one of these handmade items when she first learns of her pregnancy at HCPCC. Marcy always needs help doing this and through the years she has spoken at many women’s groups sharing the story of how these items impact our young moms. To see the smile on her face when she receives that very first baby gift is as they say…priceless. Hundreds of these items have been given out. This year the HCPCC will see at least 150 positive pregnancies and this means we’ll need about 150 caps or booties. These little gifts bring a

personal and heartfelt message of hope and life to women. You can reach out to others and share the love of Jesus Christ without ever even leaving your home! (Yes, we can even pick them up if you are unable to drop them off at the HCPCC in Boerne)

Please let us know if you can help by calling 830-249-9717.

The Thursday evening Eat Out Group will be enjoying the cuisine at Scenic Loop Cafe on January 19, 2017. The evening begins with fellowship at 6:10 pm and meal will be ordered at 6:30 p.m. Take a break from cooking and join us. Please advise Marjorie Brune at [email protected] or telephone210-854-1549 before January 16, 2017.

Quarter 3, 2016 - Joseph Katebe CF026

Village: Zambia

Arrived at Village: May/07/2008

Date of Birth: Sep/13/2003

Current Grade Level: Grade 7

Rafiki Mother/Parents: Muzamose Mwanza

Siblings at Rafiki: N/A

Personal Growth:

In following, encouraging, and copying someone else's bad behavior in school, Joseph suffered the consequence of suspension. He realized that he was a fearful follower. He has decided he wants to be a leader with courage. He wants to please God rather than peo-ple, rejoicing in truth rather than in wrong doing. Joseph wants to do what is good no matter how hard or chal-lenging the thing may be. Joseph had the opportunity to spend time with his family over break. He experienced life in a different way and came home with a new un-derstanding and appreciation for all God is doing for him.

Prayer Requests: Please pray that God will help Joseph be strong, brave, and courageous when faced with choosing between right and wrong. Ask God to give Joseph discernment and wisdom for situations he will face. Pray his visit home will continue to inspire him to do his best at work, school, and play.
