    SYNOPSIS

    The musical is a version of Ingmar Bergman's film, "Smiles of a Summer Night," with abook by Hugh Wheeler. Set in the eerie, romantic light of a turn-of-the-century Swedishsummer, the show concerns itself primarily with the attempt of a middle-aged FredrikEgerman, to free himself from an unwise, unconsummated second marriage to a girl hisson's age. Fredrik finds he is falling in love with his former mistress, the actress Desiree,the beautiful daughter of old Madame Armfeldt, who herself had enjoyed memorable"liaisons" in her younger days. Desiree's present lover, Count Carl-Magnus, suspectingFredrik's intentions, sends his wife to indiscreetly make young Anne Egerman aware of thesituation. A weekend in the country at old Madame Armfeldt's country chateau bringsmatters to a head. Fredrik's son Henrik, elopes with his "stepmother" Anne, the Countreturns to his wife, and Fredrik gets Desiree and their daughter Fredrika all to himself.Having re-arranged all these latest liaisons, Madame Armfeldt dies unobserved in herwheelchair.

    ANDREA HUBER (Desiree Armfeldt) was born and raised ona central Illinoisfarm. She attended IllinoisWesleyan University, earninga BFAin MusicalTheater,and then went on to study vocal performanceat the Manhattan School of Music's graduate program. From 1985-1992, the soprano was engaged at the Krefeld-Monchengladbachopera house in Germany, where she sang leading roles:Violetta in Latraviata, the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, and Antonia in TheTales of Hoffmann. As guest artist,she was a sought-after MerryWidow,

    Rosalinde, and Countess Maritza (which she sang here at LOSD in 2005) at the Theateran der Wien in Vienna, the opera houses of Graz, Munich, Leipzig, Wiesbaden, Bern,Dublin, Gent, etc. Also at home in the musical genre, she has done Julie in Show Boat,Kate in Kiss Me, Kate! and is thrilled to add the role of Desiree. Ms. Huber has appearedfrequently on European television and radio in live concerts. She recently opened hernew one-woman show of Bolcom and Brei cabaret songs. She has toured the U.S. andEurope with her show ...a little WeiJ/, featuring the songs of Kurt Weill. Last season, thesinger turned to directing: Sweeney Todd, and this season's Oliver! at the English-speakingtheater in Heidelberg. She has been on the faculty of the American Institute of MusicalStudies in Graz, Austria (AIMS) since 2002, and is adjunct voice faculty for the Azusa

    Pacific University in Heidelberg, Germany, where she resides.

    KANDIS CHAPPELL (Madame Armfeldt) is delighted to bemaking her debut at Lyric Opera San Diego, though she is hardlynew to San Diego audiences. She is an Associate Artist of the Old

    Globe Theatre and has appeared in more than 25 productions there.Kandis has performed in numerous productions at South Coast Repin Costa Mesa, and has worked at theatres across the countryincluding Lincoln Center, the Huntington in Boston, Milwaukee Rep,Seattle Rep, ACT in San Francisco, the Mark Taper Forum in Los

    Angeles, and North Coast Rep in Solana Beach.

    SCOTT GREGORY (Fredrik Egerman), a native San Diegan,received his B.S. in Choral Education from Dickinson State Collegein North Dakota. He received his Masters of Music from the

    University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and later continued hisDoctoral studies at the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio.Scott has sung throughout the United States and Europe: ChicagoOpera Theate; II Piccolo Theatre, Firenze, Italy;Whitewater Opera;The National Opera Company; and various other opera companies

    in the U.S. and abroad. He performed the roles of Raoul and Msr.Andre in the Germanproduction of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. With Lyric Opera SanDiego, Scott appeared as Captain Corcoran in H.M.S. Pinafore, the Miller in RumpelstiItskin,the Learned Judge in Trial by Jury, and the Father in Hansel and Gretel. He has also beenheard as Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Dandini in La Cenerentola, Guglielmo inCosi Fan Tutti, and Top in Copland's The Tender Land. Scott and his wife, Pamela Laurent,

Most recent engagements include theCelebrant in Bernstein's Mass with the Minnesota Orchestra; his

    New York City Opera debut as Schaunard in La Boheme, Danca"l"roinCarmen, and First Minister in CendrilJon; his German debut as Silvio in

    I Pagliacci, and Dandini in La Cenerentola with Theater Hagen; and a return to the ChautauquaOpera as Guglielmo in Cosi Fan Tutte. Throughout the 2009-20 I0 season, he returns toHagen as Harry Easter in Street Scene, Germont in La traviata, Jupiter in OrPheus in derUnterwelt, Silvio in I Pagliacci, Ottokar in Der Freischutz, Der Konig in Glanert's Die dreiRatsel, and the Wolf in Into the Woods.

    CAROLINE NELMS (Anne Egerman) currently lives in San Diego,CA. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from PepperdineUniversity and Master's degree in vocal performance from UCLA,where she performed roles such as Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, Susannain The Marriage of Figaro, Adele in Die Fledermaus, and Serpetta in LaFinta Giardiniera. Upon completing her degrees, Caroline began singingwith Los Angeles Opera, Opera Pacific, San Diego Opera, and LyricOpera San Diego, where she recently sang the role of The Dew Fairy

    in Hansel and Gretel. She has been a church soloist for eight years and has taught bothvoice and piano. Caroline's voice can be heard on a commercial for Target and on thesoundtrack of the 2002 film, Entre Llamas.

    ROBERT BOLDIN (Henrik Egerman) is originallyfrom Pittsburghand is excited to return to LOSD where he was last seen as RalphRackstraw in H.M.S. Pinafore. He recently had the opportunity tocreate two roles in world premiere productions, Carl in 0 Pioneersand Billy Herndon in Abe!, the musical. Other recent credits includeKaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Damon in Acis and Galatea,Frederic in The Pirates ofPenzance, Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S. Pinafore,Lucano in The Coronation of Poppea, Hotel Porter in Death in Venice,

    and Doctor/Malinger/Dog in The Good Soldier Schweik (world premiere recording - CedilleRecords). Robert made his European debut in a Stephen Sondheim review at Le GranTeatreo del Liceu (Barcelona). Other companies he has worked for include Chicago OperaTheater, Skylight Opera Theater, Dayton Opera, Union Avenue Opera, and ArizonaBroadway Theater. In the coming months, he will be returning to Muddy River OperaCompany as Goro in Madama Butterfly and will join the Northwest Indiana Symphony forA Cole Porter Celebration! in May.     SHIRLEY GILTNER (Countess Charlotte Malcolm) is veryexcited to be apart of such an amazingly talented cast. Shirley waslast seen on the LOSD stage playing Bonnie in Anything Goes oppositeher long time teacher and mentor Jack Montgomery. Since then shechoreographed and reprised her role as the Fortune Teller in theHarts Performance Inc. production of Sideshow at the Lyceum Theater.Most recently Shirley choreographed the San Diego premiere of 13the Musical for the California Youth Conservatory and in the spring

    she will be choreographing their production of Annie. Shirley has worked for Lyric Operaas a Choreographer,Assistant Stage Manager,Assistant Director, and, of course, performer.Her favorite role, however, has been as the Dance Teacher, Choreographer and Assistant

    Director for Lyric Opera's Summer Academy. Some of Shirley's favorite shows on theMoonlight Stage: Smokey joe's Cafe, Ain't Misbehavin', and Lucky Stiff; on the Starlight Stage:Some Like it Hot, Annie, jekyll & Hyde; Lambs Players stage: American Rhythm 2000 and 200 I;at Lyric Opera: Man of La Mancha, Rumpelstiltskin, Trial By jury, Anything Goes, and A LittleNight Music. Shirley would like to thank Jack and Leon for believing in her and her family,especially her father who comes to every show, for their love and support.

    LAURA BUENO (Petra) was last seen this season in Lyric OperaSan Diego's production of Anything Goes as Hope Harcourt. Beforethat, she was seen in Lyric Opera San Diego's production of Iolanthein 2007, in the title role, and as Molly Brazen in The Beggar's Opera.

    She portrayed Peep Bo in Starlight Musical Theatre's production ofHot Mikado and portrayed the same role in Lyric Opera San Diego's2005 The Mikado. Other credits include Wendy in Peter Pan, The

    Secretary in Menotti's The Consul, Dorothy in The Wizard ofOz, Zaneetain The Music Man, Chava in Fiddler on the Roof, Margy in State Fair, and Nanette in No, No,Nanette. She has also performed extensively with the San Diego Opera chorus. She waspleased to be part of the world premiere opera Corps of Discovery-A Musical journey, aboutthe Lewis and Clark expedition, portraying six different roles, including Lost Her Moccasinsand Dancing Fish, with performances at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, The YorkTheater (in NYC) and the Missouri Governor's Mansion. She has directed/choreographedsuch shows as Honk,jr.!, Beauty and the Beast, and Once on This Island,jr. Laura has beeninvolved in dance for almost 20 years and currently teaches ballroom dance to childrenthroughout San Diego County with Edudance-Classrooms in Motion. Laura has a BS inMusic Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia and studies voice with Dianna

    Ruggiero.

    LARISSA GARCIA (Fredrika) is a San Diego native. Shedeveloped a passion for theatre and voice at a young age from herteachers and mentors through school as well as youth organizationsand programs such as Lyric Opera San Diego Summer Academy,San Diego Junior Theatre, and San Diego Children's Choir. Currentlyan eighth grade student at Thurgood Marshall Middle School, shevolunteers her talents to create, write, and perform skits and playsabout character education for elementary school students through

    Spotlight Ovation's Teen Connection. Larissa has performed in the following theatre

Larissa is friendly and outgoingand enjoys reading, music, and comic strips. She is excited to be a part of this production

    JORDAN MILLER (Mr. Lindquist) was recently seen at LyricOpera San Diego as Billy in Anything Goes. Other San Diegoappearances include the Old Globe's 2009 production of How TheGrinch Stole Christmas where he understudied and twice performedThe Grinch; and Cygnet Theatre's revival of Bed and Sofa asVolodya for which he received a Craig Noel award. Other notableproductions include Performance Riverside's Annie Get Your Gun asFrank Butler; Oliver! at FCLO; A Playhouse Christmas at Hunterton

    Hills Playhouse; and Prather FamilyofTheatre's regional tour of Oklahoma! as Curly. Concertperformances include Assassins at Cygnet Theatre, and jerry Springer: The Opera at theHollywood Theatre at the MGM Hotel and Casino. An active stunt performer, Jordan'sstunt credits include The King Of Norway at the Excalibur Hotel and Casino's The TournamentOf Kings, swordfighting at the Los Angeles Opera in Tristan und Isolde, and appearing inmany television, feature, and even Bollywood films.Jordan holds a BFA in Acting from the

    North Carolina School of the Arts and resides in Los Angeles.

    BRYAN BALDERMAN (Mr. Erlanson), a Los Angeles native, iscurrently pursuing his Bachelor of Music degree inVocal Performance

    from San Diego State University. He has appeared as a featuredsoloist with San Diego Pops Symphony in their Tribute to RichardRodgers under Marvin Hamlisch and debuted with Lyric Opera SanDiego in their double bill production of Rumpelstiltskin (worldpremier) and Trial by jury. He also joined the San Diego Opera intheir performances of Rigoletto and Peter Grimes. During his time at

    SDSU, he has starred as Sam in Street Scene, Nanki-Poo in The Mikado, and Forsch in Die

    Fledermaus. Bryan has participated in Master Classes with Dr. Robert C. White of theJuilliard School, early music specialist David Gordon, and author Barry Green. He is aproud member of AGMA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, and is the founding presidentof SNATS at SDSU.

    FRAN HARTSHORN (Mrs.Anderssen) is once again delightedto be appearing on the Lyric Opera San Diego stage in this productionof A Little Night Music. She has been seen on the Lyric Opera stagefor over ten years in many productions, such as Countess Maritza,Princess Ida, The Merry Widow, Die Fledermaus, The Pirates of Penzance,Oliver!, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Gondoliers, and Candide. Fran occasionallysubs as a soloist at various local churches, has released a solo jazzCDd, and sings jazz, big band, and pop music with several localbands. D

    SHELLY HART BRENEMAN (Mrs. Segstrom) is a San Diego-based singer and arts educator. She has performed locally withLyric Opera San Diego, San Diego Opera, Cygnet Theatre, and as aresident artist for the Broadway Theatre inVista. Credits outside ofSan Diego include roles with Pensacola Opera,Victorian Lyric Opera,and Hawaii Opera Theater. She holds a BA in Music from CaliforniaState University Fullerton, and a MM Degree from the University ofHawaii. Favorite roles include: Guide I in Lyric Opera San Diego's

    world premiere of Rumpe/stiltskin, Violet in Side Show, Mrs. Nordstrom in A Little NightMusic, Mrs. Silverpeal in The Impressario, and Nina in A Day in Hollywood ...A Night in theUkraine.     LISA ELLIOTT (Mrs. Nordstrom) is happy to return again tothe Lyric Opera San Diego stage. Previous roles here include Fifi inA Waltz Dream (2009), Celia in Iolanthe (2007), Sylviane in The MerryWidow (2006), and IIka in Countess Maritza (2005). Lisa graduatedfrom San Diego State University with a Master of Music degree invocal performance, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in music fromScripps College. She is the soprano soloist for the Village CommunityPresbyterian Church Choir in Rancho Santa Fe; recent concert works

    there include Handel's Messiah and Vivaldi's Gloria. She was a soloist for the Solana Beach

    Presbyterian Choir, touring several cities in Eastern Europe in 2003. Lisa has conductednumerous church and school music programs in the San Diego and Washington DCareas. Her soprano duo "Serenati" performs in a variety of concert events regularly

    J. SHERWOOD MONTGOMERY (Stage Director I ScenicI Designer I Artistic Director) is glad to return to designing and

    directing a Lyric Opera production. He has acted, designed, anddirected throughout the U.S., including Alliance Theatre (Atlanta),The Shawnee Festival (Indiana), Missouri RepertoryTheatre (KansasCity), The Drama Division of Julliard School (N.Y.C), Starlight (SanDiego), Welk Resort Theatre, and San Diego Opera (Die Fledermausand The Barber of Seville). He has performed a wide range of roles,

    from Wolsey in A Man for All Seasons to The Man Who Came to Dinner in straight plays, toSchultz in Cabaret, to the Lord Cancellor in Iolanthe. He is listed in "Who's Who in

    America" and "Who's Who in the American Arts." Last year, along with Leon Natker, hereceived the Shiley Lifetime Achievement in Theater Award for the body of his work. Hecollects masks,Acoma pots, and great meals-a hint to the wise gift giver.

    LEON NATKER (Conductor I General Director) is in his 21styear at the helm of Lyric Opera San Diego and his fifth as manager ofthe Stephen and Mary Birch North Park Theatre. He made his stagedirecting debut at 16, when he formed his own theater group anddirected Albee's The American Dream. He made his professional di-recting debut at 24 with a production of Britten's The Beggar's Opera.Since then he has directed productions ranging from Purcell's Didoand Aeneas to Gershwin's Lady Be Good, and the now infamous "VeniceBeach" Gondoliers. He has directed for such companies as Oak Park

    Civic Opera, DuPage Opera Theater, Quicksilver Theater, San Diego Opera Outreach,Chamber Opera of Chicago, and Shawnee Festival Theater. He was a founder of ChicagoOpera Theater, where he sang in more than a dozen productions. During the summer,Leon is often on the faculty of The American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz,Austria.For Lyric Opera, he has directed and conducted over 29 productions, including ourcritically aclaimed Rumpelstiltskin and Trial By Jury.

    PAM STOMPOLY-ERICSON (Costumes I Makeup) has been a member of theLyric Opera San Diego family since the beginning of time. She has been the residentcostume designer and coordinator and makeup artist for more shows than she canremember, much less list. In her free time (1), Pam helps to run The Costume Shop,

    is principal wig and makeup artist for San Diego Opera, is makeup designer andinstructor for LaJolla Playhouse and UCSD, and freelances as a costumer and makeupartist for numerous local theatre and film projects around town. Most recently she

    finished the makeup design for La Jolla Playhouse's The Wiz, special effects makeupfor LJP's Memphis, as well as their premiere of Third Story by Charles Busch. She'spleased to announce that Third Story has made its way to New York, along with herdesigns, starring Kathleen Turner and Charles Busch! As always, Pam really needs to

    thank everyone involved in the process of getting one of these shows up, for with-out the amazing staff, there would be no costumes or makeup! And thank you Momand Paul for putting up with me and my schedule and jumping in where and whenneeded!

  • IISTEPHEN TERRY (Lighting Designer) is currently the resident Assistant LightingDesigner at San Diego Opera. He designed SDO's 2007 production of Wozzeck. Assistantand associate design work locally includes productions at LaJolla Playhouse and The OldGlobe. Other credits: Resident lighting designer for Odyssey Dance Theatre in Salt Lake

His music production work here [music direction,orchestration, conducting, etc] includes Fiddler on the Roof, A Little Night Music, all the Starof India "boat shows," and 2008's critically acclaimed Candide. Music production at otherSan Diego theatres includes the Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, San Diego Rep, NorthCoast Rep, Sledgehammer, The Fritz, and Moonlight. Onstage work includes NationalTheatre for Children [two North American tours], the La Jolla Playhouse, San DiegoOpera [10 roles, and 80+ productions in their renowned Chorus], Lamb's Players Theatre,MoonlightAmphitheatre, Starlight, and 45 acclaimed roles here at Lyric Opera. For threeyears, Joseph was a music director for San Diego Opera's education department, and hewas substitute keyboardist for Ringling Brothers in several cities during 200 I. He haswritten topical and/or parody lyrics for numerous LOSD mainstage productions andspecial events, wrote parody lyrics to opera arias for San Diego Opera and the DiscountComic Opera, and penned the farce Get a Clue! for Black RabbitTheatre.     Lyric Opera San Diego after ten years working professionally in NYC. Most recentcredits include: Production Manager & Education Co-Director for New York City's

    critically acclaimed Gotham Chamber Opera. She also served as Production StageManager for companies across the U.S., including Lincoln Center Festival, CaramoorMusic Festival, Bard Music Festival, Orlando Opera, Connecticut Opera, Augusta

    Opera, Dicapo Opera, and LOSD. Diana has had the honor of working with manyleading opera and musical theater legends, including Regina Resnick, Martina Arroyo,

    Renee Fleming, and composer/arranger Jonathan Tunick. Diana graduated with degrees

    in Keyboard Performance and Music Education from UCLA, with further studies atThe Royal College of Music, London.
