You will be given a rigorous programme of theoretical knowledge that will allow you to further your own interests within the subject, i.e. design, marketing and script writing. You will look at varying approaches to theatre throughout the world and how political and social change has affected the art of theatre and its perception by the public.
Further to this you will watch a wide variety of live theatre productions that will enhance your understanding and your approaches to the subject.
Why choose this course?The course has been recognised for its ability to create exceptional performers and achieve top grades via a wide range of performances and exam pieces. You will be part of a team that studies both new and traditional texts and works with university lecturers and authors from around the country.
Students studying Performing Arts will become part of our Centre of Excellence. As such, they will be taught by some of the best teaching staff in the country and benefit from a wide range of extra-curricular activities to support their onward applications to the country’s most prestigious institutions.
Students will develop their talents and professional skills by enjoying our wide range of experiences including; international trips, being part of industry standard performances, performing at professional venues, high profile patrons and professional links, free music tuition and nationally recognised Bronze, Silver and Gold Arts Awards.
You will participate in a number of public performances at both internal and external venues and our Drama and Theatre students are an integral part of our Centre of Excellence productions.
Entry requirementsA minimum of 3 x Grade 5’s and 2 x Grade 4’s at GCSE including a Grade 5 in English Language, a Grade 5 in Maths and a Grade 5 in another written subject. You must also successfully pass an audition. This will be arranged after your admissions interview.
What will this course lead on to?Apart from theatre, television and radio there are a variety of career opportunities linked to this course. Marketing, Media, Social Work, Drama Therapy, Theatre in Education, Teaching and Youth Work to name but a few.
At university you can further your study in Drama, Acting, Theatre and Performance Studies, Media and English. Drama and Theatre also aids further study in Law, Psychology and Sociology.
A Centre of Excellence
What is this course about?This is a vibrant and energetic course that enables students to study an array of theatrical genres and transfer the play text into production. A Level Drama and Theatre looks at the whole production philosophy, from the page to the stage.
Live PerformancesEach year you will have the opportunity to perform in large scale productions to a live audience at The Cronton Playhouse. Recent productions have included Legally Blonde, Phantom of the Opera, A Chorus Line, Les Misérables and Sweeney Todd.
Please note: all of our A Level subjects must be
studied as part of a full time A Level programme. You will choose 3 A level
subjects to study over two years.

Enrichment OpportunitiesAs you would expect, A Level Drama and Theatre is based around extra-curricular commitment and Cronton Sixth Form College offers a wide range of performance opportunities that benefit the wider community. As a Centre of Excellence the department is committed to a wide range of industry standard productions throughout the year and you are encouraged to be a part of this.
Together with our regular trip to New York University, the Palais Garnier and Moulin Rouge in Paris, Cronton Sixth Form College offers the opportunity to explore backstage facilities at university and in professional theatres; working with undergraduates and professionals alike – most recently with West End and Broadway actors.
Our Centre of Excellence performs THREE major musicals and a series of concerts throughout the year in our state of the art theatre, The Cronton Playhouse.
How will I be assessed?Coursework (Devising an original group performance piece with Research Report and Portfolio) plus scripted group performance in front of examiner.2 Written Examinations (Live theatre evaluation and performance text analysis and deconstruction).
