STEWARDSHIP 2014 Thanks to Ellen and the Vestry for your efforts and good cooking for our Financial Stewardship Kickoff meal! We believe all that we served enjoyed! It was a blessing for the Vestry to serve our Parish! We have a terrific start for our 2014 year. To date, Lisa has received 45 pledges totaling $146,804.00. This amounts to 40.5 percent of pledges received last year, and 43 percent of last year’s budget from our first fruits. Thank you for your generous acts of faith! If you have not done so, please take this opportunity to complete and return your pledge today. You can mail or drop it off to Lisa, bring to church on Sunday, or you can go to our website and click on our link to email it! Stewardship - the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care. For God’s glory! PG & Ellen

It’s Pumpkin Time!! The pumpkins will be delivered on Saturday, October 12th and hands are needed to help unload the truck. If you are available, please come to the church at 9:00 to greet the truck and help our EYC youth unload. Also, a signup sheet is in the Narthex for those who are available to sell pumpkins. Please sign up as often as you are able! Thank you in advance for volunteering your time and efforts to make this another successful St. Philip’s pumpkin year! For questions, please call Caroline at (601)398-6249 or email at [email protected].

Outreach News Our parish is blessed with an abundance of resources. Many, many of our parishioners give their time to outreach efforts in our community, such as Stewpot, McLeod School Teacher Appreciation and Book Buddies Program, Whitfield Hospital, and Habitat for Humanity. These gifts of time by many people are given freely, and in ways that make a tremendous impact on the people and children whom they serve. We have also been blessed by the ongoing gift of Marie Hoerner, a former parishioner, who named St. Philip’s as one of three beneficiaries in her will. Each year, we receive a check from her foundation that helps to offset our mortgage and buildings and grounds needs. In addition, our Outreach budget receives 10% of this annual gift. Since 2009, we have received over $300,000 from Marie’s generous and life-giving gift to us. Not only has it assisted us in replacing roofs and air-conditioning equipment and updating our facilities, it has enabled us to dream about how we as a parish, through our Outreach in the community, can do something significant to make a difference. The Outreach Committee has been working to identify an institution or organization where we can make this difference - a place where we use our hands, our hearts and our dollars. In committee conversations, MeLeod School consistently comes up as this organization, because of our proximity to the school, because of our rich history with it, because we already have had so many volunteers involved with Book Buddies, Teacher Appreciation Luncheons, because we have donated books and playground equipment, and most especially, because we value and love our children. The Outreach Committee, with approval from the vestry, would like to present our ideas about how to best utilize our monetary abundance in a way that will enrich the school. But they want to hear from you, and hear your ideas. And, of course, no matter the decision, our parish will continue to contribute to and support all our ongoing outreach ministries. On Sunday, October 20th, during the Sunday School hour beginning at 9:15 in the parish hall, we will hold a forum and discussion to hear what you think. Please come, and bring your ideas and dreams for McLeod or propose other places in need. The committee will take time after the forum to discuss what they heard and present a plan to the vestry.

Stewpot - Weekdays

We are looking for some more volunteers to serve at Stewpot on weekdays. We serve about 4 or 5 times a year Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to about 1:00 p.m. If you are interested, please contact Patty Clark for more information, [email protected]

Altar Guild News On Saturday, September 21 the Altar Ladies met for their Annual Fall gathering. Two new members were welcomed with the altar flower and handkerchief. They are Ginger Hoover and Terri Glisson. We are so happy to have them with us. We welcomed Jane Jones back. For me, it’s like the good old days having her.

Our meeting was productive. The Shawl Ministry will meet twice yearly for lunch and fellowship. The Knitters will work at their leisure and try to keep the Shawl box filled. We will green the church on Sunday, December 22 after the 10:30 a.m. service. Mary Buchanan has offered to do the vestments for the Lay Eucharist Ministers, and Patience Rall has taken over the communion linen care. Lollie Everett is working on the green vestments for Kyle. Things seem to be going well. Nancey Scott announced that St. Columb’s, with the help of St. Philip’s and St. James will host the ECW meeting on November 8-9.

We voted to have permanent shelves built in the flower area, improve the sink, and paint the cabinet. I’ll just list what we voted for: A small home communion kit, ten oil candles - for the pew poles. Pete Everett is working on the poles to make them very stable. Resurrection style communion linens. They would be used at Easter and at all funerals. They are very beautiful. More candle holders for our Candlelight services and wine for Epiphany, for the Bishop’s reception, and for the ECW Conference.

This list will go to the Vestry to approve, but it’s all needed and will make things a bit nicer for us.

After noonday prayer, a nice lunch and a bit more visiting, we went home, and I hope with the feeling of a task well done.

Thank you Ladies~ Love, Lucette

Book Buddy Program at McLeod There are a great number of children at McLeod Elementary School on Westbrook Road who desperately need extra assistance. Some are already behind on their grade level, some have no help at home, some have learning problems or emotional problems. The need is tremendous and there is a solution. The book buddy program that a lot of St Philip’s parishioners are already involved with needs more volunteers. It takes 1 hour a week to help a child during school hours. You may choose the day, time and grade (k thru 5). The rewards are overwhelming for both you and the child. If you are interested, please talk to me, Pam David, Kyle, Virginia Hoover, Jack Conway, Machelle Bernheim, Nerrell Ridley, Ruth Cory, or Nancey Scott. These are the current Book Buddies at McLeod and I believe I can speak for them when I say that we love this ministry to the children. Patty Clark [email protected]

Many Thanks to Gavin Bird! Gavin Bird, grandson of Grace Duckworth, is the designer of the 2014 Goat Roast t-shirt! The design is fabulous!

Thank you very, very much for lending us your artistic talent.

All Saints’ Day

EVENSONG

November 1, 2013

6:00 p.m.

Lay Ministry Workshop The Lay Ministry Workshop is a continuing education event for the renewal of Worship Leader’s licensing for 2013, October 11-12 at Gray Center. The Rev. Bruce McMillan will be the presenter for Friday evening and Sat-urday morning. To register for the event, please go to this link: http://www.dioms.org/digital_faith/events/3157977. Also coming up is the Convocational Lay Ministry Work-shop at St. Elizabeth’s, Collins on Saturday October 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with The Rev. Henry Hudson and The Rev. Susan Hrostowski. For more information, please call St. Elizabeth's (601-765-6809).

St. Philip’s Lector Training Workshop Saturday, October 5th, 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

This will be a refresher time for all lectors currently in our roster and an invitation for those who would like to be trained. Because we have not had a "practical" training in a while, we will focus on "the art of reading" from the lec-tern. Everyone will have a chance to practice. David O'Steen will lead this portion of the training, while Kyle will talk about the spiritual practice of reading Holy Scripture. Because we believe that the proclaiming the Word of God is an honor, it is very important that everyone who has a role in this ministry attend this meeting so that everyone has an opportunity to be refreshed.

The following is the ninth and tenth in a series of Philippians’ memories of our church during the last 50 years. We hope any and all of you will join us in this effort as part of our anniversary celebration. Just jot down a couple of paragraphs and send them to Lisa or drop them by the church office. If you have questions, call Sigrid Conway (601) 956-5173. Thank you!!!

St. Philip's Reminiscence

When my family and I first moved from Washington State back to MS in 1992, we had a difficult time finding a church home. We attended several different Episcopal churches in the Jackson area before we finally discovered St. Philip’s. At that time, we were living in a suburb close to the downtown area of Brandon where my daughter, Valena, attended school, played select soccer and recreation softball. All of her friends were either Baptist or Methodist who went to large churches with many activities for young people. As a result, she was asked and attended several youth gatherings at one of the local Baptist churches. The Episcopal Church we attended not only did not have a youth group; it also had no one even close to Valena’s age. As a concerned teacher/Mom who knew much can happen in those adolescence years and the importance of spiritual influences on young lives, I spoke to her about the possibility of us attending one of the other denomination’s churches However; she surprised me and said “no”, she liked the Episcopal Church. She commented that her Bratton Green experience caused her to want to remain Episcopalian. Thus, the following Sunday we began our trek to Jackson churches to try to locate a church home. The first church on our list was St. Philip’s. Our intention had been to try three or four different churches for a one month time period and then make a decision. That never happened. The first Sunday at St. Philip’s, we met Nat Duncan and he invited Valena to the youth group. Several young people, Carrie, Leila, Ann Marie, Matthew, William, and Mary Elizabeth all welcomed Valena. That group of young people rocked. They were active all through junior high and high school going to Honduras to build houses, to South Dakota to assist with work with Native Americans, working the pumpkin patch, etc. Seventeen years later, we are still at St. Philip’s. Even after Valena left home and I moved from Brandon to Crystal Springs, I continued to be a part of St. Philip’s even though, as one friend pointed out, I drive past four Episcopal churches.

At St. Philip’s, I discovered my church home; and no matter who comes or goes, I feel the sense of community with wonder-ful music, many friends, and a dedicated clergy. Thanks be to God for showing us St. Philip’s.

Nancey T. Scott Still eager to publish St. Philip’s memories from anyone and everyone, I jotted down some comments I heard one Wednes-day morning. After 10 o’clock church each Wednesday, a group of lively church members gather in the library for what is affectionately called “Coffee and Conversation,” according to prominent member Lucette Bennett, who remembers this tradition as originated by the Altar Guild many years ago. “Marie Hoerner, who lived at St. Catherine’s Village back then, came to the Wednesday service and always made a pot of coffee and refreshments for us to enjoy after church,” Lucette recalled.” She was from the north, and she sometimes brought delicious sausage. “ Marie is fondly remembered by old-timers and her name lives on through a generous fund she left to our church. Barbara Rogers makes coffee and nearly always brings fresh pastry now from Great Harvest Bread Co. where she once helped bake. Rosa Dial, who has also brought treats to share along with her other contributions, says she “loves the people at St. Philip’s and the wonderful liturgy” in the Book of Common Prayer. Emma Price, who used to live in New Jersey and New York, describes St. Philip’s as a place of “love, tenderness, and hon-esty.” Since joining the church in 2005, (and excelling in the group of knitters, among other things), Emma says she never felt like she had to say, “could I ?...should I?” she was welcome to be herself. “It has been like that song, “The Wind Be-neath My Wings,” she concludes. Tears come to the eyes of Vangie Joseph when she recalls coming to St. Philip’s with her late husband, Collie. “When we first visited many years ago, a young woman was the supply priest, and since Collie was from the old school, we tried going to some other churches. Never finding a church home, they came back the very first Sunday the Rev. Tom Slawson became priest. Both Father Slawson and the current priest , the Rev. Kyle Seage, won the hearts of not just Vangie but Collie, too. Vangie and her children particularly remember the kindness shown them by the clergy and church members during many times the Josephs were in the hospital. When Collie died—a beloved member known by all parishioners—the church was a loving refuge. As Barbara Rogers adds, “the people here know the difference between love and intrusion.” It’s hard to realize Lollie and Bob Everett were ever newcomers to St. Philip’s, both having been active in the Diocese of Mississippi (Lollie, a former president of the Diocesan Altar Guild) for many years. She describes feeling like she was going through rush week at college when the St. Philippian delegates to annual Council encouraged her to come join us .
