AllardHall

Here is a map highlighting interesting destinations on our lovely campus. Hopefully this map will be informative if you are a newcomer to UBC, and will encourage even the life-long Vancouverite to explore our University. While the map features mostly sightseeing locations, it also names all the key buildings on campus such as the Bookstore, the SUB, and various athletic centres. UBC Faculty of Law at Allard Hall - 1822 East Mall

Rose Garden - 6278 North West Marine Drive Regularly voted the most romantic location on campus, the UBC Rose Garden offers perhaps the most spectacular view of the North Shore from the University. The nearby flagpole on Main Mall adds to the picturesque scene. The garden originally opened in 1949 and now encompasses over 450 plants, an arbour, and blooms from June to September.

Museum of Anthropology (MOA) – 6393 North West Marine Drive Considered one of the top destinations for visitors of Vancouver, the MOA at UBC has a broad collection of artifacts, focusing on the Pacific North West but ranging across the world. Their most famous piece, Bill Reid’s The Raven and the

First Men, is a must-see for every Vancouverite and visitor.

Nitobe Memorial Garden – 1895 Lower Mall This traditional Japanese Tea and Stroll garden is the perfect escape during hectic times of year (like O-Week!) Each tree, stone and shrub has been deliberately placed and is carefully maintained to reflect an idealized conception and symbolic representation of nature. Nitobe Garden is considered to be the one of the most authentic Japanese gardens in North America and among the top five Japanese gardens outside of Japan.

First Nations House of Learning at the Longhouse – 1985 West Mall The Longhouse is a unique building that reflects the architectural traditions of the Northwest Coast. It serves as a "home away from home" where Aboriginal students can study and learn in a surrounding that reflects Aboriginal traditions and cultures. The longhouse brings together a wide variety of services and student resources and provides space for a wide range of activities. Its presence on campus enables Aboriginal peoples to share their knowledge and culture with one another, with the University community, and with the wider community as a whole.

Wreck Beach – Trail 6, Off North West Marine Drive just north of University Blvd One of Vancouver’s more notorious destinations, Wreck is Canada’s first and largest clothing-optional beach (which means no cameras unless you’re pointing them at the mountains!). The beach is usually a very busy one, drawing sun worshippers from all corners of the city with its spectacular views, its Bohemian vibe, and the best beach blankets in the city. A nightly tradition occurs when visitors applaud the sun until it is completely set behind the mountains. Heads up! There are 474 steps down to Wreck and eventually (though you’ll want to stay forever) you’ll have to climb back up!

Beaty Biodiversity Museum – 2212 Main Mall The Beaty museum puts UBC's natural history collections (started in the 1910s) on public view, featuring more than two million specimens. Among their treasures are a 26-metre-long blue whale skeleton suspended above an atrium, the third-largest fish collection in the nation, and a myriad of fossils, shells, insects, fungi, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and plants from around British Columbia and the world.

UBC Botanical Garden and Centre for Plant Research – 6804 South West Marine Drive Founded in 1916, the facility spans 78 acres, includes more than a dozen different types of gardens, and is committed to perpetuating biodiversity through education and research. Don’t forget to visit their Greenheart Canopy Walkway. Open year-round and the only of its kind in Canada, the Walkway is a 308-metre aerial trail system that offers a rare perspective of the west coast forest canopy ecosystem. The Garden also hosts a plant sale in the first weeks of Sept!

The Village – University Blvd at Allison Rd You might spend a lot of your time eating at the SUB, but don’t fear branching out to the Village, a mixture of useful shops and restaurants. Here you can find dozens of types of Asian, Indian, Sushi and fast food restaurants, Booster Juice, McDonald’s, Blenz, Starbucks, Staples, CIBC, a dollar store, print shops, a pharmacy, and a BC Liquor Store.

Tower Beach – Trail 3, Off NW Marine Drive at its intersection with Chancellor Blvd and East Mall Heading back towards the law school, Tower offers a more secluded and less busy beach than Wreck, but still comes with 400 stairs and the clothing-optional spirit. As a pebble beach, it’s unique, and as the closest beach to Allard Hall, law students often take advantage of its serenity and sun. The beach gets its name from its tall concrete range/direction instrument towers that are relics from World War II.
