After earning his B.A. degree in theology and political science at the University of Iceland, he completed a master’s

degree in religion from Yale Divinity School in 1992. He spent another year in Syria studying Arabic before returning to Yale to complete a Ph.D in Middle Eastern History in 1999. Prior to coming to Williams in 2003, he taught at Hofstra University for four years. He is the authorof several books and edited volumes, and his courses at Williams have included “Movers and Shakers in the Middle East,” “The Modern Middle East,” and “The Nile.” Magnús has been the leader of prior alumni trips to the Red Sea nations, the Aegean Sea, Turkey, Ethiopia, and Morocco.

Egypt enchants and amazes no matter how many times you experience its ancient wonders. Please join us next March for a journey into this exhilarating land from several vantage points—by motorcoach, plane, and riverboat via the luxurious Sanctuary Nile Adventurer. Our study leader, Magnús T. Bernhardsson, the Chair of Arabic Studies at Williams, will further enhance our travels with his deep expertise on Middle Eastern history and the Nile’s impact on Egypt.

Begin with two nights at Cairo’s 150-year-old Mena House, a five-star hotel that has counted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sir Winston Churchill among its guests. Venture to nearby Giza for an up-close tour of the Great Pyramids, the enigmatic Sphinx, and the Valley Temple of Chephren. Fly to Abu Simbel to view the temples of Ramses II and Queen Nefertari, which feature massive carvings on cliff faces.

Board a plane to Aswan, where you’ll float down the Nile on a four-night cruise on the deluxe Sanctuary Nile Adventurer, stopping to explore the wonderful Greco-Roman temples that overlook the river. Highlights include the astonishing Philae Temple, a sacred site rescued from floodwaters; the exceptionally well-preserved Temple of Horus in Edfu, with its vast chambers and colorful reliefs; and the extravagant, 3,400-year-old Luxor Temple. Next, wander through the imposing tombs and temples at the UNESCO-listed necropolis at ancient Thebes.

Drive to Sakkara, necropolis of the Old Kingdom, to visit the remarkable Step Pyramid of King Zoser, built in the 27th century B.C.E. Tour the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, whose great collection includes treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun. Back in Cairo,

focus on the city’s Coptic and Islamic influences with a visit to the Coptic Museum, the Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the impressive Sultan Hassan Mosque, a masterpiece of Mamluk architecture.

FRIDAY, MARCH 27: LUXORStep off the ship this morning in Luxor to discover the outstanding collection at the Luxor Museum. Continue to Luxor Temple, remarkable for its size and exceptional state of preservation. Following lunch, drive to the West Bank of Luxor, site of the vast necropolis of ancient Thebes. View the famed Colossi of Memnon, the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings, and the temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el–Bahari. This evening, the captain hosts our farewell dinner onboard. B,L,D

SATURDAY, MARCH 28: LUXOR / CAIRODisembark Sanctuary Nile Adventurer this morning to walk along the Avenue of Sphinxes at Karnak Temple and see the Hypostyle Hall, with its massive columns. After lunch, return to Cairo to check in at the Conrad Cairo Hotel. Dinner and the evening are at leisure. B,L

Continue to the Sultan Hassan Mosque, a masterpiece of Mamluk architecture. Lunch is at leisure. Gather for a farewell dinner tonight to toast an enlivening journey. B,D

See the Sphinx and the Valley Temple of Chephren; then explore the Solar Boat Museum, housing the exceptionally preserved cedar boat found near the Pyramid of Khufu. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. Gather this evening for a welcome reception and remarks by our study leader. B,R TUESDAY, MARCH 24: CAIRO / ABU SIMBEL / ASWAN / SANCTUARY NILE ADVENTURERBoard a morning flight to Abu Simbel. See the monumental temples of Ramses II and his favorite wife, Queen Nefertari. Constructed in the 13th century B.C.E., the temples were relocated in the 1960s to save them from submersion after the building of the High Dam. Then fly to Aswan and embark Sanctuary Nile Adventurer for a late lunch. This afternoon enjoy a felucca ride around Elephantine Island and the botanical gardens. Dinner is served on board, followed by a folkloric show. B,L,D

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25: ASWAN / KOM OMBO This morning discover the exquisite Philae Temple, relocated due to the rising flood waters of the Nile and visit the unfinished obelisk at the ancient stone quarries. Return to the Sanctuary Nile Adventurer and enjoy the amenities as we cruise along the Nile. In the afternoon visit Kom Ombo’s picturesque Ptolemaic temple, dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and decorated with a series of beautiful reliefs. Prior to coming to Williams in 2003, he taught at Hofstra University for four years. He is the authorof several books and edited volumes, and his courses at Williams have included “Movers and Shakers in the Middle East,” “The Modern Middle East,” and “The Nile.” Magnús has been the leader of prior alumni trips to the Red Sea nations, the Aegean Sea, Turkey, Ethiopia, and Morocco.

Dear Williams Alumni and Friends,

Egypt enchants and amazes no matter how many times you experience its ancient wonders. Please join us next March for a journey into this exhilarating land from several vantage points—by motorcoach, plane, and riverboat via the luxurious Sanctuary Nile Adventurer. Our study leader, Magnús T. Bernhardsson, the Chair of Arabic Studies at Williams, will further enhance our travels with his deep expertise on Middle Eastern history and the Nile’s impact on Egypt.

Begin with two nights at Cairo’s 150-year-old Mena House, a five-star hotel that has counted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sir Winston Churchill among its guests. Venture to nearby Giza for an up-close tour of the Great Pyramids, the enigmatic Sphinx, and the Valley Temple of Chephren. Fly to Abu Simbel to view the temples of Ramses II and Queen Nefertari, which feature massive carvings on cliff faces.

Board a plane to Aswan, where you’ll float down the Nile on a four-night cruise on the deluxe Sanctuary Nile Adventurer, stopping to explore the wonderful Greco-Roman temples that overlook the river. Highlights include the astonishing Philae Temple, a sacred site rescued from floodwaters; the exceptionally well-preserved Temple of Horus in Edfu, with its vast chambers and colorful reliefs; and the extravagant, 3,400-year-old Luxor Temple. Next, wander through the imposing tombs and temples at the UNESCO-listed necropolis at ancient Thebes.

Drive to Sakkara, necropolis of the Old Kingdom, to visit the remarkable Step Pyramid of King Zoser, built in the 27th century B.C.E. Tour the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, whose great collection includes treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun. Back in Cairo,

focus on the city’s Coptic and Islamic influences with a visit to the Coptic Museum, the Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the impressive Sultan Hassan Mosque, a masterpiece of Mamluk architecture.
