As a participant in the IHC project Hansen Family Hospital committed to survey current practices build and train a team to address opioid concerns in the organization and collectsubmit data to IHC
To help meet these objectives Hansen Family Hospital developed a standard form in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to document patient-goals related to opioid pain management after discharge Towards the training of the team as well as the community Hansen Family Hospital was the first hospital in the state of Iowa to host community discussions titled ldquoWorking Upstream to Conquer the Opioid Crisisrdquo in August
ldquoHelping our community understand how close this crisis is to home is critical to addressing the issue It can literally start within your home if you have leftover pain medications An addict will seek the drug wherever they can find itrdquo shared Megan Mollenbeck Quality Improvement Director at Hansen Family Hospital ldquoWe need to do our part in offering alternatives for managing the comfort or our patients while they are in our care and when sending them home Prompt and proper disposal of unneeded medication is also crucial to preventing misuse or addictionrdquo

need to have a formal sleep study Every patient is different so please let your doctor assist you in making the right decision for you
Sleep Studies A sleep study known as
polysomnography is required to determine the presence of any sleep disorders including sleep apnea excessive leg movements etc
During a full sleep study the patientrsquos brain wave activity is monitored to determine the various sleep stages Eye activity heart rate airflow from the mouth and nose chest and abdomen movement oxygen levels in the blood body position and muscle movements are all monitored throughout the test This is all accomplished pain-free with the use of patches and belts

It is no secret that America is in the grips on an opioid crisis According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2015 opioids were involved in 33091 deaths Nearly half of all those opioid overdose deaths involved a prescription opioid (wwwcdcgov)
In participation with the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative (IHC) Hansen Family Hospital has rolled out its latest innovative project the Opioid Guardianship Quality Improvement Project This project is designed to ensure all patients being sent home with opioids have a treatment care plan aimed at decreasing the need for opioid use Dr Tom Evans President and CEO of IHC states ldquoIn alignment with CDCrsquos Guideline for Prescribing Opioids Iowa Healthcare Collaborative is initiating the Opioid Guardianship Project across Iowa communities This effort will be spread by way of partnerships with participating Compass Hospital Improvement Innovation Network hospitals around the State Through this work IHC is facilitating improved communication between healthcare providers patients and families about the safe and effective use of opioids for realistic comfort managementrdquo
