!!!!With the intention to fully integrate iPad into Robert Gordon’s College we have outlined a plan around professional development for all staff. We have identified key areas we must cover, grouped the staff members and also suggested some outlines for the training agenda. !Our aim in this proposal is to give you an overview of how we see your staff training, the development and implementation of the device in the curriculum and how we can assist over an academic year. !As we mentioned, this plan is by no means rigid and we aim to work with Robert Gordon’s College to refine the training plan and adjust where necessary. !To keep the whole process simple, we use three terms to rate staff and student abilities:

Walkers - requiring more support and guidance in the adoption of technology.

Runners - comfortable with the technology and delivering the requirements.

Sprinters - technology champions who push the boundaries of what is possible within lessons.

For this project we will be considering these terms as milestones in developing teaching practices in your school. Walkers, Runners and finally Sprinters will have measurable outcomes that will be agreed and used to rate the success of this training. Before delivering the project we will expect staff to fill in a skills audit that will help us to identify their current ability. We will also go through the results with you to ensure people are in the right stage and receive training that will help develop their skills.

We offer a variety of sessions and we have included a number of these into this plan. We find that some of the best sessions have been in the classroom working with teachers on a 1:1 basis with the students. This way you can see the benefit in the classroom and any issues you may come up against in regards to apps failing, technology not “working”, we can show you a solution first hand. All we require before these sessions are discussions with the teacher to plan the lesson and understand the objectives.

Alongside the staff training sessions I have also added in School training. These are some ideas for sessions the school can host or key areas they should be focussing on away from training with Academia. !!!

Overview

We would look to use dedicated time with each department and individuals to focus on areas of their development. Our training will not be ‘Off the shelf’ but bespoke to not just your school but each department and teaching style. We also have vast experience with working with all learning styles and helping to create sessions for those who work best as visual learners, students who enjoy creating sound clips for revision or written documents. !Within all areas of the training we will focus on the outcomes and not just the general practice of using devices in the classroom. Asking the question ‘Why would you like to….?’ and ‘What would you like to achieve by doing…..?’ can shape our plan and our overall outcomes and goals of raising student attainment, increase effective technology usage in the classroom and improve exam results.

So lets look at the project as a whole and detail the key areas we wish to focus on and outcomes we expect from the training plan above. From previous discussions we have had, we identified specific areas we would be wanting to focus our time on and have used the timeline key to do so: Department Training, In classroom sessions, Think Group sessions, Student digital leaders and in house college training. !Behind the training plan we have put in place we track progression of the staff and students on different scales. Academia use a Walkers, Runners, Sprinters model, designed in house and allows training sessions to be aimed at different ability levels. These progression steps also match perfectly to the SAMR Model and how we will develop staff from a Substitution and Augmentation stage to having a real impact and transform learning with Modification and Redefinition.

Our department training will help focus in on departmental concerns and pedagogical strategies. These development sessions will work with department heads or small groups of teachers. We will focus on areas they wish to incorporate iPad on a priority scale, training they believe they need in relation to the survey and devise a personalised vision and plan strategy to work towards.

Some of most effective sessions have been in the classroom and giving the teachers a chance to see their resources and lesson plans delivered when using iPad as a tool. We would discuss the lesson objectives and plan before delivering the session and the way they would like the session delivered (lead by us or just providing assistance). We expect discussions to take place a couple of weeks prior to the session for the trainer to put together ideas of how the lesson will work. By using your structure to a school day teachers can expect to book out particular lesson times when our trainers are on site.

School training refers to some ideas and expectations of development over the time Academia are off site. After each day on site we will discuss these objectives and what your ‘next stapes' are. By using resources such as iTunes U we will build resources and a platform for all staff to share ideas with our trainers and discuss any problems they may have when we are off site. These are just examples but we can tailor these to your specific core apps or areas such as ‘Feedback and assessment’, ‘collaboration projects' etc. Each one of these suggested we will provide a 2 hour Google hangout off site to discuss development and review the program so far.

Student digital leaders are a great way to promote collaboration and peer to peer learning. We often see a real impact in the classroom when teachers have a knowledgeable resource in the class that understands iPad and can help with any issues. By selecting up to 4 students per form we will work with them on core skills, presentation skills, app training and troubleshooting issues. This way students and teachers have a ‘go to’ student if they are in need of assistance. We also develop this strand of training for students to create a ‘Genius Bar’ and ‘Lunch and Learn’ sessions on core applications.

Who is going to drive this project across the school? Away from departmental training we will look to create your very own Think Group. A team of teachers who are real evangelists and members of staff who will drive this project. By focussing time with this group they can then host training sessions away from Academia to help filter the information passed on. We would create a staff skills audit to help with the process but we suggest having a variety of staff from all departments and also ability levels.

After School (1.5 hours) Think Group Training

Training around a couple of core apps from the list. How these can be used in a classroom workflow, detailed examples of how to use the application

and implementation into their lesson plans.

Example StructureTo give you an example of how a day on site could work we have used your current timetable and one of our suggested days on site (4). The structure for this example day gives us time with each group crucial to the overall development of the school. We often find that spending half day/full day with one particular group can blur the message and do more harm than good. By breaking down into small sections we define clear goals for the day and moving forward instead of too much information and a long ‘to-do’ list, because as we all know time is too precious in schools.

How it Breaks downTo break this information down even further we have created the below diagrams that demonstrate how much time will be dedicated to each strand of training. This is over an average day on site such as the one structured above but also for the year plan.

Using the pie charts above we can see that on an average day the time is split evenly between the in classroom sessions and departmental training and planning. The year plan that incorporates days that focus on projects (11), Think Group sessions and Vision and planning days. This shows that the time spent is still equally split with perhaps some dedicated time throughout the days spent with the Think group to carry on momentum at key points over the academic year. !To breakdown the time we approximately work with: Department for 25 Hours 20 minutes, Think Group 14 Hours, In classroom time 27 Hours 20 Minutes, Student Digital Leaders 5 Hours 20 minutes.

Core AppsWith all deployments we look at applications and in particular ones that will have an impact on teaching and learning. We develop our training plans around pedagogy not just apps and how they can be used. This being said we focus on a core set of applications that will impact areas of learning from planning, presentations, productivity, assessment and accessing learning resources. These applications will be ones that work in all areas of the school and from there we are able to build in the substitution applications for departmental specific tasks.

These applications will be the backbone to the training and development going forward. We have included key Google applications into this: Classroom and drive, as without these we these will be able to provide teachers with methods to use current resources and also assist in the assessment and feedback loop with instant access. Others include Explain Everything for task creation, presentation and video tutorial creation. Nearpod allows all current Powerpoint, Keynote or PDF presentation to become interactive with your students to avoid the chalk and talk style. QR Reader will help bring the classroom and school to life. This will double up with Augmented reality applications that can be used to create videos and links to resources using the app. !We would then look to build on applications around these and ones that fit together well not duplicate the capabilities of another. For example we would look at using Book Creator to create ePubs and utilise video, hyperlinks and sound clips this would be instead of Creative Book builder. Examples of other apps that work well with these that we would look to introduce at different key stages would be: • Adobe Voice - Presentation/video creation KS2/3 • Adobe Slate - Blog/word document KS3/4 • iMovie - Video creation - All years • Padlet - Resource access and brainstorming - All years • Skitch/PDF editor - Annotate PDF documents - KS3/4

OutcomesSo why are you doing this? What do you want to achieve? What’s the end goal with the iPad project? These are all questions we ask in our vision and planning session. This way we can help determine what the end goal for this project is, not just as a School but to each department and even each classroom at times. It is great to start with a long term goal and the ‘Improve exam results’ objective. Then we like to work backwards and focus on goals for teaching and learning. Such as: Increase effective use of technology in the classroom, Increase iPad estate across the school, % of assignments submitted digitally through Google classroom, Improve teachers digital skills using our Staff skills audit. The key to the success is setting these as realistic achievable targets, do not set yourself up to fail, be ambitious but ensure they are achievable. Below we have some examples and key indicators that are say to track during the academic year.

Example AgendaWe have developed some possible session agendas that would fit into your current position in your deployment and also have an impact with your teaching staff using applications that they may be familiar with. These sessions can be treated as a ’Pick & Mix' style approach as we may wish to move some sessions closer to the start of the year. For example the session migration will be key to start using iPad effectively in the classroom, so focussing on this with the introduction of Google apps for education is key. As stated throughout the plan these are only suggestions and we would look to tailor specific elements to your needs and eradicate any concerns from teaching staff.

Vision and Plan - Working with department heads or selected members of staff within a department we will discuss their overall vision for iPad and ways they would like iPad to impact on teaching and learning. We would go through how these match up to the schools’ overall vision and incorporate key goals such as ‘Google Classroom assignments’. By using the skills audit completed by their staff we will be able to identify the in classroom sessions we should deliver and book these into our training plans. The overall aim to outline key indicators and goals to aim towards whilst working backwards on how we can get there with that particular department.

Quiz and Assessment - Developing assessment and feedback loops through applications using iPad. We will look at current resources and ways you can share these for assessment whilst also creating interactive quizzes, polls, open ended questions etc. These can then be linked into Google apps for education and the ‘add-on’ functions to create automated services from any assignments and feedback given.

Staff and Student collaboration - Focus on ways to create collaborative lessons or how to work collaboratively within the department. Looking at specific applications, moving content and sharing individual files to shared space. This session will incorporate core applications and help develop ideas to promote project based learning in the school.

Learning anywhere, anytime - A detailed look and demonstration of how to create 24/7 access resources for your students. We will go through the ways to create a flipped classroom and how to ensure resources and work can easily be accessible by your students away from the classroom. How you can set assignments and keep live updates via posts and announcements.

Video/online resource creation - Sessions dedicated to promoting personalised learning and giving access to resources + lesson content 24/7 for students. By demonstrating multiple ways to create your very own video tutorials we will then expect staff and students to start creating video tutorials and short videos of ‘How to' and then share these across the school. These can then be shared either using Google Drive or using the Youtube for schools account. We will look at either creating an account per department of for the College.

Video and Animation in the curriculum - Film and animation is a great way to promote creativity and inspire visual learning. We will focus on how you can create and explain your understanding via Stop motion animation, Green screen and video editing. By using different methods we are able to adapt the session to all areas of the curriculum and go into detail how each department can make the most of film and animation. For example, maths students can use Stop motion animation to show their understanding of solving quadratic equations, science can use Green screen to demonstrate reactions and the process of their experiments and findings.

Classroom workflows - Now we have established core apps and worked with departments on their needs we can focus on how the device can be used as a tool in the classroom with simple but effective workflows. The sessions will go into detail with examples on using apps such as Nearpod, Explain Everything and classroom to set a starter activities, ways to create and the perfect plenaries. This way we can find which workflows suit each teachers style and give them the variety of how applications can link into current teaching practices or seamlessly together.

Digital leader Genius Bar - Let’s get students involved in the development process and share their knowledge and ideas with others. The genius bar sessions are open forums for students to share best practices and how some applications or work that has had an impact on their learning. Giving students the voice is a great way to inspire others and generate buy in from teachers who have been sceptical in the past.

Productivity on your iPad - It’s great how much iPad can impact teaching and learning in the classroom but how can you become more productive using the device in day-to-day life? We will focus on best practices and ways to increase productivity and decrease time spent with trivial tasks. These can easily be complete using the device and also look at how collaboration alongside Google apps for education can impact on your productivity with the device.

Specific App Workshops - Depending on the department or group we can work on specific app training. We would focus on how this would integrate into their classroom and lesson plans but with a focus on impact and transformational learning not just the substitution thats adds little impact from current practices in the classroom. These apps would be discussed and panned prior to the session as we want to avoid the app overload effect where the device is used a lot but with no impact.

Project days - This is a fantastic way to immerse students and staff into learning with iPad. We will plan out a project that looks across multiple subject areas and includes a theme related to the school. Example projects we have hosted in the past have been marketing campaigns for a new school logo, application design with the winner put into production, coding projects to create an app, film projects to tell a story and many more. We would discuss potential ideas and how we can include as many areas as possible but with effective ways to use the device, this is then targeted at a key stage, year group, form or whole school project.

Enhancing and creating - The vast amount of applications that are available in education can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to creativity and enhancing your lesson plans/resources. This session incorporates the applications you are already using whilst also introducing other key elements that can help improve creativity in the classroom. With ways to enhance resources from PDF's to ePubs, written out step by step guides to video tutorials and printed worksheets to digital worksheets.

No More Chalk & Talk - Teaching has evolved and with the introduction of mobile devices in schools we no longer need to stand at the front and deliver a presentation. This session looks at ways to interact with your class, produce engaging quizzes and assessments when delivering a presentation. We will also look at ways to enhance your current resources from the chalk and talk style to be able to use on iPad to fully interact with learners. The session uses core applications and covers migration of content and practices of how they can start using these the very next day.
