Founded in 1962, the Archives occupies five rooms in the University=s Dacus Library, a three-story brick structure completed in 1969. The Archives collects and preserves material relating to Winthrop University history; women=s history; and South Carolina history, particularly the heritage of the Catawba Region (York, Lancaster, Chester, and Union Counties). As of April 2000, the Archives holdings total 3000 linear feet of processed and unprocessed records; or 6,000,000 pieces, 1000 bound volumes; 300 oral history tapes; 700 microfilm rolls; 5000 microfiche; and 2000 books.

There are over 1,000 discrete collections in the Winthrop University Manuscript Collection that are invaluable to researchers. More than half of those relate to the Catawba Region, and many of these have hard-to-find family history information. This information may include ancestral charts, notes, family histories, letters, wills, grants, indentures, biographical data, and diaries. Much of the material is unpublished. The amount of material varies from collection to collection.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE The guide is divided into two parts: a family surname index section and a subsidiary

records section. There are over 1000 names for which the Archives contains family history and genealogical information. The guide gives the family surname and the collection in which the name can be found. A (,) indicates two or more spellings of the same name. The subsidiary records section indicates additional collections that may have relevant information.

PATRON USE OF COLLECTIONS

Because of limited staffing, the Archives cannot do research for patrons. The Archives department will consider requests for limited reproduction of material when such duplication can be done without injury to the material, when such duplication does not violate donor agreements or copyright restrictions, and when reproduction does not cause undue burden on the small staff.

E-mail us or send a postcard or letter with a stamped, self-addressed return postcard or letter indicating the family surname in which you are interested, and the Archives will reply with the estimated cost of duplication. Upon receipt of a check or money order, the Archives will forward duplicated materials to you. We charge $10 per family name researched, plus cost of photocopying at $0.25 per copy page, and a postage and handling fee per request.

Should a researcher choose to visit the Archives, we are open 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Please call to schedule a visit. Although an appointment is not necessary, the Archives is occasionally closed due to school holidays, vacations and illness. Telephone: 803-323-2131. E-mail: [email protected] Be sure to check the library and the archives website for more general information.

Records onmicrofilm or microfiche are indicated by MF. We have a number of South Carolina Churchrecords in our collection and they are as follows:
