The smooth cartilage on the ends of the bones of the knee joint become thin and bone spurs, known as osteophytes, form at the edge of the joint. Symptoms Pain in the knee. Stiffness in the knee. Difficulty to sit in confined space or getting up from sitting. Swelling in the knee. People start to limp. What you can do to help If you are limping with pain, a stick held in the opposite hand may give some benefit. If you are overweight, try to lose some weight.
