LAST WEEK - September 22, 2017 – Dr. Richard Whitaker: Vera French Mental Health Centers

Sixty five members and guests attended on Friday. A special Rotarian guest was Elizabeth Danckwerts from Capetown, South Africa. She was visiting Rotarian Doug Peterson, as a former host of a Friendship exchange. Her club has only 27 members and they support 2 Global Grant projects each year with their fundraising. She said NO one is allowed to be absent from their fundraisers. Mark Pratt, new member of the North Scott School Board, was a guest of Bill Tubbs. Jeremy Kaiser asked for volunteers for the Harvest Party on October 11. Jeff Ashcraft gave the anticipated schedule for the surfacing of the playground this week. He also announced that the playground will be a National Demo Site for the Park and Play Corporation. Tricia Kane and the auction committee are accepting items for the auction, every Friday. Patrick said No one can be absent!

Dr. Whitaker and Jessica, his foundation chair, explained the Vera French mental health housing situa-tion in the Quad Cities. They have 138 housing units to keep troubled individuals who need to be monitored. Mentally ill people are generally not dangerous. Several levels of care are found in different centers, through-out the area. The Scott County Health department closed down the Pine Knoll center which had 60 beds. The new ruling only allows 16 beds in one facility. There are therapists in all the Davenport schools. About 500 children benefit from the Vera French services. Suicide in the 3rd largest cause of death in young teens. Dr. Whitaker would like to get a presence in the downtown Davenport and west end area.

The 4 Way Test Of the things we THINK SAY or DO

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
