A GLENWOOD TITAN STUDENT-ATHLETE A person of incredible character, selfless dedication, and relentless determination ATHLETIC MISSION STATEMENT Glenwood athletics will provide a platform for developing student-athletes into successful adults. Our programs will prepare students physically and mentally for the rigors of athletic competition; teach athletes to learn from successes and failures; prepare them to work together towards common goals; and challenge them to commit to the hard work, dedication, and responsibilities needed to sustain a balanced, successful life. ATHLETIC VISION STATEMENT Glenwood athletic teams will successfully balance academic and athletic demands of student-athletes. Our student-athletes will maintain high academic standards and conduct themselves with high character and respect of others. Our programs will routinely strive to maximize their competitive successes against all competition. We will be humble in victory and gracious in defeat, always learning and improving.

PHILOSOPHY OF OUR EDUCATION-BASED ATHLETIC PROGRAMS Interscholastic athletics is an integral part of the student experience. Participation in athletics provides students with an unrivaled opportunity to develop life skills such as a strong work ethic, discipline, dedication, teamwork, collaboration, unselfishness, leadership, time management, and how to respond to failures and successes. Winning is an important part of our athletic programs, but only to the extent that it enhances the development of our student-athletes. In addition to developing fundamental skills and knowledge of their sports, our programs are designed to contribute to the student-athlete’s physical and mental health and maturity, as well as foster high character and moral values. Participation in athletics is a privilege offered to our students; One that comes with their willingness to accept the responsibilities that are associated with being part of our programs. OVERVIEW The 2018-19 Glenwood Athletic Department consisted of 111 coaches (51 paid and 27 volunteer high school and 28 paid and 5 volunteer middle school coaching positions), one athletic trainer provided through Springfield Clinic Sports Medicine, one athletic secretary, and one director of athletics. During the 2018-19 school year, our high school and middle school programs competed in approximately 862 contests (GHS – 596, GMS – 266). Of these contests, roughly 326 were home contests (GHS – 209, GMS – 117). This year we hosted 16 post-season events/tournaments, eight IESA post-season events and eight IHSA post-season events. The middle school hosted a baseball regional, softball regional, cross country sectional, 7th grade girls basketball regional, 8th grade girls basketball regional, 8th grade boys basketball regional, wrestling regional, and 8th grade girls volleyball regional. The high school hosted the girls tennis sectional, boys soccer super-sectional, a home football playoff game, opening round game of the girls basketball regional, wrestling regional, and girls soccer regionals and super-sectional. In 2016-17 we hosted a total of six post-season tournaments/contests. Last year year we hosted 11.

Glenwood High School offers 23 varsity sports. 43 separate levels ranging from freshmen to varsity make up the high school athletic program (page 4). These figures include Cheerleading and Dance one time even though both have fall and winter seasons. Cheer, Dance, and Bass Fishing are considered Activities by the IHSA. In addition, we offered eSports for the first time this year. eSports is currently an emerging activity within the IHSA.

Our official IHSA enrollment for 2018-19 was 1403. This is up from last year’s enrollment of 1381. 492 athletes participated in at least one sport this past school year. This number is down from 530 in 2017-18. This count includes the 17 students whose only participation was eSports.

286 boys (40%) participated, and 225 girls (30%) participated in athletics. Schedule A (page 9) provides a breakdown on the participation numbers for our sports programs. Schedules B, C, & D (p.10-11) provide a detailed breakdown by numbers of students in each grade who are involved in one, two, or three sports.

GATE RECEIPTS & SEASON TICKETS The summaries are shown on Schedules E and F (pages 12-13)

CENTRAL STATE EIGHT CONFERENCE Glenwood High School finished second in the CS8 all-activity point totals for the 2018-19 school year. We crowned three CS8 champions, football, boys swimming and diving, & girls soccer. The complete CS8 results are provided in Schedule G (page 14 ).

IHSA TOURNAMENT SERIES This year, we earned two state trophies: A State Championship for the boys cross country team and a second place finish for the boys swimming and diving team in the athletes with disabilities category. Our teams earned a combined five regional and three sectional championships. In addition to team successes, we had multiple individuals go to state competitions. A complete season summary begins on page 5.

TEAM EFFORT It takes a village…

Athletics requires a tremendous team effort from multiple people. Our coaches work tireless to provide outstanding educational athletic opportunities for our student-athletes. They are supported by numerous people within and outside the district, including those in transportation, facilities and grounds, school administrators, teachers and staff, secretarial staff, our athletic trainer-Jon and Springfield Clinic, athletic boosters, parents, and community supporters.
