Welcome to the second edition for 2019 with a winter theme. Hope-fully many of our new starters are continuing onto the beginner clas-ses and spreading the word about the sport of dog agility to encour-age others to try it. Thank you to those who have liked our social media pages and please continue to spread the word and share to pages as the more likes the easier it is to market our club to potential sponsors for the new financial year. If any club members have any contacts at vari-ous businesses who may be interested in becoming sponsors please contact the committee so it can be followed up with our new sponsor-ship packages or even smaller businesses that may be able to help us with raffle prizes at the trials.

President’s Message July 2019

We are more than halfway through our Trials for the year. There have been 3 Games Trials, and a double Agility and Jumping Trials, all well advertised and attended by both competitors and the public.

A computer glitch during one of the trials delayed our awards and resulted in a new computer for the Trial Secretary.

The early training set up time of 6:30 PM seems to be working well and has resulting in pack up being completed by 9:30 PM. This will be most helpful through the winter months.

Vanessa Loughlin has kindly consented to providing some training tips for our instructors. It was a very successful evening and was much appreciated by all attendees. We are looking forward to Vanessa’s return to provide some foundation classes for us. Watch our Facebook page for details.

Our Special General Meeting to approve amendments to the Club constitution was success-fully held on June 20

th with the changes passed unanimously. Thank you to all those mem-

bers who attended and a big thank you to Jenny Pearson and Michele Steggall for all their work behind the scenes.

I would also like to welcome all our new members and their dogs. I hope your stay with us is enjoyable and rewarding.

Finally, a reminder that our next Trial is the Gwenda Baker Memorial Trial on Saturday 27th of

July; it is a double Agility and Jumping Trial. We look forward to your Trial entries and/or offers to be a steward at the Trial. Prospective stewards please contact our Trial Manager, Cathy Warcup.

Have fun with your dogs

Pin Needham.

From the Committee

Since our last Newsletter in April, the ADCSA Committee has undertaken the following work for our Club and its members:

• The Committee presented proposed amendments to update the ADCSA Constitu-tion at a Special General Meeting of members held on 20 June 2019. The amend-ments were unanimously carried and will now be sent to Dogs SA for approval prior to submission to Consumer and Business Services.

• Our Media and Promotions Officer has successfully sought further sponsorships and prize donations from businesses such as Paws 4 Massage, Petstock, Petzest, Waggly Club and Grill’d Restaurant.

• ADCSA has accepted invitations to provide Agility demonstrations at the Adelaide Equestrian 3 Day Event and Canines @ Coro.

• We have submitted our Active Club Grants funding application to the Office for Rac-ing, Recreation and Sport.

• ADCSA has achieved Child Safe Environment Compliance requirements with the Department for Education and Child Development and we are continuing to promote training in Member Protection and Child Safety for our Committee and Instructors. This will include achieving compliance with new legislative requirements for Working with Children Checks which came into force on 1 July 2019.

• ADCSA has welcomed several new members to our Introductory classes in May, June and July.

• ADCSA has arranged a series of seminars with Vanessa Loughlin, a highly experi-enced Agility competitor and trainer, to provide specialised agility handling and founda-tion skills training for our Instructors and members.

• We have updated the laptop and software used by our Trial Secretary and assis-tant.

• Our Equipment Officer, Treasurer and Chief Instructor have updated the ADCSA Equipment Asset Register and repaired various items of equipment.

ADCSA has successfully managed a double Agility Games Trial in May 2019. This event was well attended and promoted in the media, with members of the public also coming along to watch the action.

Please speak to a member of the Committee if you have any suggestions or feed-back. We would also welcome any assistance with operating the club if you are able to help.

MAY GAMES TRIAL

The Agility Dog Club of SA hosted their May Games Trial on 25th May and although the day started with con-

stant showers aside from a downpour around lunch the weather improved through the day as over 260 entries took part in the morning and afternoon events. A fun time was had by all as competitors worked through the confusion at times of the Strategic Pairs and Snooker while trying to keep moving through Gamblers to gather enough points before completing the set course home.

The morning saw judge Neville Cox overseeing the Novice Strategic Pairs Chloe Bartlett & Kirbuff Ruby Tues-day and Unetta Shugg & Carnwath Retro by Design placed first overall from Jane Caulton & Lifesong Give Me Kredit and Marie Warning & Tookurra Seaside Serenade (ADCSA) with Debra Karutz & Hudson and S Baillie & Shartooz Firebug third. The winning pair showed how it can be done without being the most obvious ‘fastest’ dogs being a Pug and a Havanese but worked efficiently as a team to come out with the fastest time overall from a pair of border collies in second.

The Excellent Strategic Paris followed in the first ring where Jo Shirlock & Sherbrooke Last Luna Eclipse and Sophie Wright & Maggie put in an impressive display to finish nearly 9 seconds ahead on time of the runner ups Fiona Gyzen & Milo and Kerri Jonathan & Shartooz Wriggles with third going to Jenny Pearson (ADCSA) & Jasmine and S Baillie & Shartooz Its About Time.

In the Masters Strategic Pairs Lindsay Newton (ADCSA) & Albajail Feel the Rush and Julie Lyon & Shepalian Dreams Unwind (who is 13 years old) combined to win the class from Katrina Warland & Albajail Fair Maiden and Natalie Mudge & Shartooz Myths N Legends. Third place went to Barbara Moore & Merlin and Kerry Thomas & Abby.

Excellent Gamblers started off the centre ring with judge Noeline Chapman where Judy Magarey & Jordi won on 37 points from Andrew Butler & Kee on 34 points with Tina Comely & Theglebe Lady third also on 34 points but a slightly slower time with just over a second separating the placegetters.

Masters Gamblers was taken out by Julie Lyon & Albajail Embrace the Race by 2 points from Lindsay Newton (ADCSA) & Albajail Feel The Rush with third going to Natalie Mudge & Shartooz Myths N Legends.

In the Novice Gamblers Sophie Wright & Maggie took first place on 40 points from Sally Legg & Lifesong Now You See Me on 35 points with Marie Warming (ADCSA) & Tookurra Seaside Serenade third.

Masters Snooker started in the early showery conditions in the third ring for judge Peter Dynan with first place going to Natalie Mudge & Aurora on 22 points and a time of 44.40 while Kerry Thomas & Abby also recorded 22 points but were slightly slower on time. Third place went to Mika Peace (ADCSA) & Flatout Breakout on 21 points and the fastest time of the 4 competitors on that score.

Novice Snooker went to Sophie Wright & Maggie on 24 points from Michelle Chapman & Tookurra Midnite Passion on 21 points with Helen Randall & Tuscamada Bronze Aussie third on 18 points.

Excellent Snooker saw overall time decide the placings with Barbara Moore & Gaius winning on 21 points and the fastest time from Katrina Warland & Albajail Fair Maiden who were also on 21 points with Fiona Gyzen & Milo in third also on 21 points. After a break for lunch and morning presentations the afternoon classes started with the first ring featuring Novice Strategic Paris judged by Peter Dynan. Michelle Chapman & Tookurra Midnight Passion and Darren Sumsion & Eddie placed first from Tia Vuaran (ADCSA) & Della and Julie Brown & Collieston Rhythm & Rhyme with Alyson Pulbrook & Tayona Miss Molly and Angie Shepherd Comeby The Fifth Element third.

Excellent Strategic Pairs saw Joan Murray & Donriver Put a Spell On You and Sophia Threlfall & Lily to suc-cessfully complete the course to take out the event.

With Jane Lawrence presiding the Gamblers ring started with Excellent Gamblers where Mika Peace (ADCSA) & Flatout Breakout won on 33 points and the fastest time with Katrina Warland & Albajail Fair Maiden second also on 33 points with Robyn Jackson (ADCSA) & Hillani Regal Reko third.

Canine massage for the athlete, working dog or companion! Massage for canines come in many varieties, but they are all treatments. Relaxation massages that are soft, soothing and calming, slow the heart rate and their breathing. Relaxation massages help dogs who have anxiety issues as well as simple stress. Stress you say! Dogs have amazing stress issues, just being dogs. They are on duty at all times, working, caring and being our best friends. Many working dogs, guide dogs or the police dogs wear harnesses that create pressure points which need attention at the end of the day. Dogs with muscle strain need a more intense massage, releasing tension and any knots within the muscle fiber. This also stimulates the blood flow to release the toxin build up. Preparation massages are done prior to active sport like agility prepares the muscles for action. Just as a human athlete warms up before competing dogs need to have their muscles prepared for action. If dogs are taken straight from the car or crate and then perform at speed with jumps, twists and turns, this can be harmful and are likely to sustain injuries. After action massages are just as important as this releases the lactic acid buildup. If the lactic acid is not released or dispersed the buildup may cause pain through muscle tightness and swelling. Rehabilitation of dogs that have been injured can be a long process depending on the injury. Massage for these dogs is usually done in conjunction with other forms of treatments such as hydro therapy, acupuncture and laser. Massage reduces the pain and inflammation by treating the scar tissue within the muscle. Traditional massage is hands-on using different hand movements to stimulate the muscle layers, skin and the nervous system. Other methods include Reiki which is energy from within healing method which is both hands-on and distance. Reiki can be used from a distance when the dog is in a lot of pain and or is resistant to touch. The energy from the hands is directed at the dog and a connection is formed by the practitioner and the dog. You can see the difference in the breathing as both the practitioner and dog start to connect. Reiki can be used to identify areas of the body requiring massage. Generally the practitioner feels a different vibration or heat in an area of pain. There are now machines and other less traditional options available which can be very good at achieving results and reducing time frames for healing. Accell is a 3 dimensional circular vibration which goes through 4 foot of bone and 2 foot of tissue to the cell level. This is a means to get a great massage without pain. By going deep within the muscles and nerves following the blood flow, it is able to release toxins and flush out of the body. Dogs with arthritis can achieve great results from the use of this machine in conjunction with traditional hands-on massage. In my business I use all three of these methods of massage treatments, both at home visits and at events. If you would like to discuss any of the above information or how massage can assist your dog achieve a healthier lifestyle please give me call on 0414 252 374 or visit my website www.paws4massage.com.au.
