Yarragon has scored a helpful boost via funding awarded under Baw Baw Shire Council’s Community Development Grants Program for 2017-2018.

A series of Council grants recently announced included $960 for events and sustainability education workshops run by the BBSN, and $450 towards a bowling machine for the Yarragon Cricket Club juniors.

Stay calm, and choose not to stress In the last couple of weeks, the wheels threatened to fall off my life’s wagon. You probably know the feeling; something goes wrong at the worst time and just when you think you can’t cope with another problem, something else blows up. In my head, I know these times can happen periodically in life and I have survived before. I’ve come to realise that the best way through such dramatic turns of events, is to choose to stay calm. When my fear of the worst outcome threatens to overwhelm me, I acknowledge the fear, decide not to dwell on it and choose to focus on something positive. You will notice there’s a lot of choosing here. I also pray about the situations, making sure my prayers do not become another form of worry- a bit of a trap at times. This requires discipline! And a good measure of trust that our Heavenly Father will be with us through the testing times as well as in the easy times. Often I have found I need to decide what commitments must be honoured and

what can be rescheduled or cancelled. Most people are very understanding and

supportive. For those of you who know our situation: Ross is recovering his sight

and a new car is in the pipeline; so many people have been wonderful!

    REFLECTIONS By Rev Sue Jacka

  • NOVEMBER 2017 Yarragon Community Newsletter- Page 3

long-term office bearers thin, other new challenges emerge. So how do we better support, inspire and sustain our present and future leaders?

As essential seeding funds, this $3000 grant helps to kick-start a locally-led engagement program to build social inclusion, a sense of belonging and local pride. However additional funds and professional support from Council’s community development officers will be required to successfully complete the draft Community Plan. So work to secure realistic resourcing for the life of the plan has really just begun...

We want to achieve an improved participation rate by better engaging, involving and connecting Yarragon residents of all ages, particularly young people, so everyone has a chance to find a voice and share their views in planning for our community's future. Positive change depends on us all!

Ultimately the Our Connecting Yarragon 2030 project will complete a review of local priorities by the community and lead to a valuable update of the previous 2008-2013 Yarragon Community Plan.

This will assist in strategic planning and help Council to deliver on its

responsibilities for community development and facilities.

    Skillsbank option:

Increased recruitment and sustainable contribution by more volunteers to existing community

groups and/or future projects and activities is essential to Yarragon’s social fabric and growth.

However we recognise many working people feel time poor so a new model for volunteerism is needed to fully tap latent talents of all residents willing to make a practical contribution where and when they can.

So our community survey includes questions to check the level of interest in developing a local Skillsbank. The proposed online list of voluntary projects, tasks and activities would enable people to self-match their own different interests or skills. This means individuals could still contribute to local groups or activities in short bursts, perhaps better suited to their busy lifestyles and other commitments.

    Survey out soon:

Phase 1 of the Connecting Yarragon 2030 project will start soon with survey questions being finalised and distributed after feedback from key

players over the next fortnight. A household mail-out of community survey forms is planned for mid-November and all residents are urged to provide their responses before Christmas, if possible. Initial comments around the old school site will also help inform Council’s public consultation processes on your preferred uses for that land. This may assist in the Shire’s negotiations with other levels of government to secure the site for the long term benefit of our community.

As part of the Connecting Yarragon 2030 project, a website page will also be set up with online survey forms and links for people to access additional copies for their household. Regular updates will also be provided for interested local people via the project website and this community newsletter.

Community survey boxes will also be made available at key outlets around town so please keep an eye out. And if you are aware of neighbours or friends with literacy, writing or other challenges needing individual support, please offer your help reading aloud and scribing their views so that their voice is heard too.

    Thank you!

Over the past few weeks students in both Foundation / One classrooms have been designing, collaborating and creating a

Scarecrow as part of the Gippy Goat Scarecrow competition. The students investigated garden scarecrows by using their prior knowledge and talking about experiences of seeing scarecrows in gardens.

They talked about why scarecrows can be important for growing successful gardens, especially vegetable gardens and what a scarecrow looks like. Families supported the projects too by donating hay and clothing. The students all collaborated together to make a large scarecrow that could be erected in the gardens at the Gippy Goat Café. The students absolutely loved the project and had many laughs as their scarecrows really came together and was so life size. If families get a chance, don’t forget to visit the Gippy Goat café to see the scarecrows in the gardens, taking pride of place in their new home.

Yarragon Craft and Produce Market Saturday October 28, 2017 By Marcus Hanley

With the success of the market being quite weather dependent, we are always keeping a keen eye on the forecast as we head into a market. Although we are a mostly indoor market, shielded from the weather, it helps if we have sunny skies to bring the crowds out! This month, we didn’t have the sunny skies, and it was on the cooler side, but the crowds did come out anyway and an excellent day was had by many stalls. With a few new stallholders in attendance including Sea’s the Day (seashells, nautical decor & handmade jewellery), Life by Colour (painted clocks and wall art), plus Pineapple Safari (framed photos), it added a new splash of colour to the market, and there was a great buzz running through the halls. Cheryl’s tomato and vegetable seedlings were selling like hot cakes

again, the BBQ was back and firing off snags left, right and centre, and the Coffee Wagon was keeping us all alert with freshly brewed coffee. Regular stallholder and glass jeweller Samantha Abbott drives from Sale to sell here, and has built up quite a following. She has been passionate about glass art from a young age with all the glass she uses being made using a variety of skills including flame working and fusing in kilns. Different

temperatures are used to achieve different colours and effects and you could say that every design has its own recipe! Our next market should be a busy one, as it’s getting closer to Christmas, so we expect to have plenty of Christmas specials available from the stalls. It’s on Saturday November 25th (the 4th Saturday), so keep an eye out for the signs around town. We are also gearing up for another December twilight market, this time on Friday evening December 15th from 4pm to 8pm. We’ll have the bbq going, plus most of the stalls and a number of the local shops will stay open also. We may even have a visit from the big red guy for the kids… more information coming up soon. See you next month.

At the meeting of the YDCA held on October 17th, 2017 the following topics were discussed: Trees in Rollo Street – these will be removed later in the year as part of the Rollo Street upgrade

between the service Road and Campbell Street. They are rotten. Council is aware of the significance of the trees, being planted by the school children in 1924 as an Avenue of Honour for the War. YDCA is working with Council and the RSL to ascertain the best way to continue to recognise this.

The Old School Site Sub Committee: is currently meeting with Council to ascertain the best way they can assist council in applying to purchase the site for Community use, after having successfully delayed the fast tracking process on the site.

The sub-committee for Our Community Plan – Connecting Yarragon 2030: are working on a survey of all sections of the community so that the whole community has input into the direction of the town for the future. Congratulations to this sub committee on their work and success in submitting an application for funding from the Council.

Next meeting is to be held on November21st, 7.00 p.m. at the Yarragon Fire Brigade Building. All welcome.

Christmas Giving Tree Christmas is one of the hardest times of the year for marginalised people across Gippsland. Anglicare is collecting presents for children in foster care and for individuals and families in financial need. Non perishable Christmas foodstuffs and decorations are also greatly appreciated. For a number of years, a few local ladies also have contributed lovely home made items for that special personal touch. We are also collecting unopened toiletries to make up into pamper parcels to give to mums in need. If you have some or would like to help pack up those already donated please contact Sue Jacka 0409 757 170 There will be a giving tree set up at the Bendigo bank in Trafalgar in mid November which gives the social workers time to sort the presents and allocate them to their families. Teenagers love gift cards- movie vouchers or department store cards allow them to choose something for themselves that they wouldn’t get otherwise. It’s a great way to share around a bit of Christmas joy with less fortunate people. Please don’t wrap presents as the social workers choose suitable gifts for their clients.

    FLAGS / BANNERS for YARRAGON

In 2012 ,when Yarragon celebrated the Centenary of the Railway Station Buildings, a number of flags were purchased to decorate Yarragon for the event. They remain the property of the Yarragon and District Community Association ( YDCA ) . After moving about a bit they have come to rest in my shed in Yarragon South. But, they shouldn’t languish there. They are bright and curvy and colourful and have little hearts dangling off them. They deserve to be out and about in our town. So, any Community group in Yarragon having an event or celebration is free to borrow these flags .Just treat them with care and return them promptly. Helen Isobel Peirson (Standing) 21 June 1928 - 30 September 2017 Isobel, as she was known, was born in Warragul, the first Standing baby to be born in a hospital. Her parents were Helen (McCrory) and Charles Standing, children of early settlers of this district (1875 and 1882 respectively). Isobel was the youngest of a family of 7 children—James, Avis, Albert, Hector, Clement and Kenneth, all deceased. Isobel grew up in Yarragon and attended the Yarragon Primary School. One childhood incident which she vividly remembered, was her frightening ordeal when she was 8 years old. She visited her little friend, the Yarragon Policeman’s daughter, to play in the old lock-up. (This was their own cubby). Her friend was out with her family, but intrepid Isobel ventured in, and somehow, the door to the cell slammed shut, imprisoning her for some time. The family returned home and released a terrified child from her prison. Needless to say that old lock-up lost all its charm after that incident. After leaving school, Isobel gained employment in the local Bakery Shop, owned by Kerin and Ernie Smythe, and later on at the

Yarragon Telephone Exchange as a telephonist. In her late teens she moved to Melbourne for a short time, before returning to Gippsland. She met and later married Len Peirson, in 1949. They made their home in Morwell and lived there for many years. Their children were Julie, Kathryn, Tony, Thea, and Brendon. In May 1980 Len sadly died suddenly and 4 years later, Isobel moved to Queensland and married Theo Peirson in 1984. She and Theo lived happily in Caloundra for many years, becoming involved in many aspects of Community life there. They also travelled extensively overseas, visiting many countries, and having a wonderful time. Isobel passed away after a long illness in Caloundra on Saturday September 30th. A beautiful lady, we will always remember with love. Isobel’s ashes will be interred at the Yarragon Cemetery at a date yet to be confirmed. From her children, grand children and all her nephews and nieces. Pamela Morrison.
