CASE STUDY: Tega Industries Ltd"We chose SAP because it had a global resource base that

we could tap into as we expand our presence around the globe"Mehul Mohanka, Director, Tega Industries Limited

Mining efficiency from SAPTega Industries is a 25-year-old engineering company that

supplies equipment for the mining industry. Headquartered inKolkata, it has subsidiaries in the US and Australia, fiveinternational sales offices and a installed customer base inmore than 21 countries.

A reputed player in a tough and competitive business, Tegahas grown at a staggering 500% over the last five years. Thisexplosive growth in the top- and bottom-line has taken place atalmost the same time as policy changes within the countryhave opened the sector to private investment for the first timein decades.

Choosing SAP:Tega Industries considered a variety of ERP solution

providers, including Oracle and Ramco. But SAP eventuallywon out because it had a good fit with Tega's global growthvision. "We chose SAP because it had a global resource basethat we could tap into as we expanded our presence across theglobe," said Mr Mohanka.

Another key reason for choosing SAP was that it was theonly vendor to offer the AutoCAD interface that allowsengineering designs to be fed on to a bill of material, facilitating easier and faster production turn around time.

Less than six months after the Go-Live date, Tega isalready seeing some early benefits. "Previously, informationabout our inventory had been out of control. After SAP wasimplemented we saw some immediate benefits," said Mr.Mohanka.

For instance, SAP helped the company identify Rs 60 lakhworth of "hidden inventory" in the system, a saving that wentstraight to the bottom-line. The company is also expecting tosee significant improvements in C-form collections, which havestarted showing up in the system after SAP was implemented.

Case Study - Associated Capsules"ERP has helped us better align ourselves with our

customers, who are spread all over India and in 50 countriesoverseas. We are able to service them more efficiently today,"

Karan Singh, Director, Associated Capsules Group

Associated Capsules Private Limited (ACPL) is one of theworld's largest producers of empty hard gelatin capsules. Thecompany is having five plants situated in Maharashtraservicing about 1,000 customers worldwide.

Top Challenges that led to ERP implementation: Poor inter -department communication, thus affecting

decision making Lack of streamlined business processes, impacted

customer service Statutory requirements, such as the FDA norms, mandate

implementation of an integrated IT solutionWhen the company decided to go in for ERP, various

options were weighed. Associated Capsules then used ascorecard to rank each of these vendors and their solution."We chose SAP because of its strong presence in India, goodservice backup and support. In fact, several Pharmacompanies were already using SAP," says Mr. Nitin. J. ParekhGeneral Manager -IT.

Project SpandanERP is being implemented in the group in two phases and

a team of 35 is dedicated towards this project. The first phase(December 1, 2004 to May 1, 2005) was completed while thesecond phase of implementation is currently on.

Post implementations, many problems faced byAssociated Capsules were solved. The company nowfunctions on one, integrated IT network. This has resulted inquicker decision-making. And real-time management has alsomade servicing its customers easier.

Benefits: Streamlined business process thus Improving inter-department communications and customer service Improved Production planning Reduction in Inventories and wastages Eliminated duplication of tasks Improved transparency within the company and the Group

"I expect the real benefits to reflect over the next twoyears or so," says Mr Singh. Over the next 18 months,we plan to implement CRM and SRM," he adds. And that'swhen Singh expects to see a healthy jump in the group'sbottom-line.

METHODOLOGY

Recognising other aspects of‘excellence’: Outstandingglobalisers, innovators andwealth creators

In addition to the objectively determined best per-forming TMEs, we have sought to identify and acknowl-edge companies that have demonstrated outstandingperformance in innovation, globalisation and wealthcreation – perhaps amongst the key businessdifferentiators today.

The process of determining outstanding globalisersand innovators included two steps.

Firstly, a universe of deserving candidates was cre-ated – objectively – on the basis of standard param-eters such as R&D spending as a percentage of salesturnover (for innovators) and exports as a percent-age of total sales (for globalisers).

In the second step, based on desk research andinteractions with sectoral experts, IMA India soughtto identify players that are not merely high R&D spend-ers but are effectively introducing new products, tech-nologies, processes, etc. Similarly, to recognise ex-cellence in globalisation, the intent was to identifycompanies that have physically expanded their glo-bal footprint in recent years by setting up/acquiringmanufacturing and/or operations facilities abroad (andnot merely exporting from India).

The outstanding wealth creators were determinedon the basis of the growth in market capitalisation forthe listed TMEs. The reference period used for thispurpose was 31/03/2005 to 31/03/2006.
