FOREWORD
This directory has been prepared as -part of the Canadian Forestry Service's Canadian Forest Resource Data Program. Established in 1976, the program erdeayors to provide current statistical information on Canada's foresv^ resources, including periodic descriptions and analyses of the resources, together with related economic, social and
environmental data.
The Canadian Forest Resource Data Program, operated
from Canadian Forestry Service headquarters in Ottawa,
involves the direat participation of the agency's six regional research centres located at St. -John's, Fredericton,
Ste-Foy, Sault Ste. Marie, Edmonton and Victoria and its two national research institutes located at Petawawa and
Sault Ste. Marie.
All provincial forestry agencies, other provincial
and federal agencies and departments, and the forest industry
cooperate in providing data for the program.
ABSTRACT
There are 46 production centres across Canada in which bare-root
forestry stock is reared and 47 in which containerized stock is reared.
In 1979, approximately 205 million bare-root seedlings and 108 million
containerized seedlings were shipped from these centres to the field for
reforestation and afforestation purposes. Total production is expected
to increase to nearly 228 million bare-root and 124 million container
ized seedlings in 1980.
On
prevoit en 1980 une augmentation de la production qui portera le total

INTRODUCTION
This directory was prepared for the purpose of providing basic
information about forest tree nurseries and current seedling produc
tion levels in Canada. It is intended principally for use by the
nursery manager and by individuals directly or indirectly related to,
or having an interest in, forest tree nurseries and their operation.
The information contained herein covers federal, provincial,
industrial and private nursery operations for both bare-root and con
tainerized seedling production. It is arranged on a regional basis,
and where more than one province forms a region, information is provided
for each province. There are no forest tree production facilities in the Yukon Territory or the Northwest Territories.
NATIONAL SUMMARY
Bare-root Seedling Production
In 1979 approximately 205 million bare-root seedlings were shipped from 46 production centres across Canada to the field for refor
estation and afforestation purposes (Table 1). Eighty-eight percent of these shipments occurred in the provinces of British Columbia (33%),
Ontario (30%), Quebec (15%), and New Brunswick (10/0 .
Table 1. National summary of bare-root seedling production.
Shipments for 1980 are estimated at 228 million seedlings,
an increase of approximately 11% over 1979. The more significant
increases in the number of seedlings to be shipped will occur in the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta. There will be no additional
production of bare-root stock over 1979 levels in British Columbia or New Brunswick.
Containerised Seedling Production
Just over 108 million containerized seedlings were shipped in
a variety of container types from 47 production centres across Canada
in 1979 (Table 2). Ninety percent of these shipments occurred in
four provinces: British Columbia (32%), New Brunswick (30%), Alberta (19%), and Ontario (9%).
Shipments for 1930 are estimated at 124 million seedlings,
an increase of approximately 14% over 1979. Three provinces will
account for 78% of the additional seedlings: Newfoundland (33%), British Columbia (23%), and Nova Scotia (22%).
Currently, Canada has 104 343 m2 of growing area available for the production of containerized stock in federal, provincial,
industrial and private greenhouse facilities. Seventy-nine percent of this area is in 208 heated greenhouses, while the remaining area is in 60 nonheated greenhouses.
The popularity of container types used varies across the coun
try. In British Columbia the most popular are the BC/CFS Styroblock
2A and 4, followed by the Spencer-Lemaire 'Fives' rootrainer books.
In Alberta, the Spencer-Lemaire 'Ferdinand', 'Fives' and
'Hillsons1 rootrainer books are used exclusively, while in Saskatch ewan and Manitoba the Japanese paperpot FH 408 and FH 315, respectively, are used.
In Ontario, the most popular container is the Japanese FH 408
paperpot, followed by the Spencer-Lemaire 'Ferdinand' rootrainer book.
Containerized seedling production is not a large operation in
Quebec. The types of containers in current use vary, and include the BC/CFS Styroblock 2A and 4, Japanese FH 408 and FH 508 paperpots, and Spencer-Lemaire rootrainer books.
In Atlantic Canada, a wide variety of container types are used.
In New Brunswick, the most widely used container is the Japanese FH 408
paperpot, followed by the Can-Am 45 cc multipot. In Nova Scotia, the
Japanese FH 408 paperpot and Can-Am 80 cc multipot are the most popular.
Table 2. National summary of containerized seedling production.
At cne present time, the Spencer-Lemaire 'Ferdinand' rootrainer book is used exclusively In Prince Edward Island, while in Newfoundland a variety of types are used, including the Japanese 7H 408 pa^erDot the Spencer-Lemaire 'Fives' rootrainer book and the Can-Am 45 cc ' multipot.
Seedling Production by Ownership
Table 3 summarizes seedling production by ownership and prov ince. Of Canada s total production in 1979, 97% of bare-root pro duction and in of containerized production ware carried out by provincial governments. These percentages may, however, differ greatly from province to province. Generally speaking, the bulk of bara-rooc production was undertaken by provincial governments in aU provinces except New Brunswick and Newfoundland. In Saskatchewan
most or the bare-root stock produced at the federal nursery is
intended for shelterbelt planting on agricultural lands while stock reared by provincial nurseries is for reforestation of cut-over forest lands.

For containerized seedlings, provincial governments undertake
the bulk of production in all provinces except Quebec, New Brunswick,
and Nova Scotia. The high production of containerized seedlings by
the private sector in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, in particular,
reflects che high proportion of private and freehold forest land to Crown-administered land.
Explanation of Directory Headings
Ownership Category: Four symbols are used to designate nursery
ownership:
F - provincial
F - federal
I - industry
X - private
Production 1979: Represents stock shipped by nurseries during 1979,
Planned Production 1980: Represents an estimate of the number of
seedlings that will be shipped during 1980.
Productive Capacity: Indicates the quantity of bare-root stock that
could be grown if the total area available for production were utilized.
Shade Area: Represents shade and open areas available for overwinter ing and hardening off, or additional rearing space for containerized seedlings outside the greenhouse facilities.
The Appendix provides the cominon and scientific names for most species grown in Canada's forest tree nurseries.
