A DIFFERENT KIND OF TRANSPORTATION FIRMNelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates, Inc. is an internationally recognized firm committed to developing transportation systems that promote vibrant, sustainable, and accessible communities. Founded by two women in 1987, Nelson\Nygaard has grown from its roots in transit planning to a 120-person, full-service transportation firm with offices across the United States.
In keeping with the values set by our founders, Nelson\Nygaard puts people first. We recognize that transportation is not an end by itself but a platform for achieving broader community goals of mobility, equity, economic development, and healthy living. Our hands-on, national experience informs but doesn’t dictate local solutions. Built on consensus and a multimodal approach, our award-winning plans are renowned as practical and implementable.

Bus Rapid Transit
East Bay BRT — On two of the busiest boulevards in the San Francisco Bay Area, we helped AC Transit develop on-street rapid bus service. BRT operating in a median transitway is scheduled to begin in 2016.
THE ELEGANT SOLUTIONBus rapid transit (BRT) projects can be transformative—moving
people efficiently and reliably between the places they live, work, and shop. The right BRT project can quickly and economically advance a city toward its sustainability, safety, and quality-of-life goals. To succeed, though, BRT must be integrated into a city’s whole transportation network.
At Nelson\Nygaard, we believe transit is an important component of complete streets. We unite service planning and street design to deliver the best rubber-tired transit solution for a street, neighborhood, or city.
Our approach is comprehensive, collaborative, and creative. We will take your BRT project from vision to reality, through the federal process and conceptual design. We look holistically at transportation needs and develop elegant, context-sensitive solutions to connect people to places.
A sampling of our bus rapid transit projects include:
“We appreciate that Nelson\Nygaard took the time to thoroughly understand our agency’s needs, demonstrated genuine concern and commitment towards our staff, policymakers, and users of our transit system, and effectively communicated their findings. Nelson\Nygaard continuously met and exceeded our expectations.”
— Amy Pettine, Director of Planning, Rhode Island Public Transit Authority
