MY FORMER LIFE: TRAINER WHAT IS IT?

MY FORMER LIFE: TRAINER is a training programme and package for educators, building on the existing film and resource.

MY FORMER LIFE is a multimedia education resource based on a documentary about four former extremists. The film and accompanying resource explore the formers’ personal and political motivations for getting involved in violent conflict, the consequences of their actions, and their departure from a life of extremism. MY FORMER LIFE combines the exploration of real-life stories with interactive and participatory exercises designed to raise self-awareness. This approach empowers participants to internalise the learning and develop personal strategies to develop their skills in building awareness of and resistance to destructive ideologies.

WHO IS IT FOR? TEACHERS AND PROFESSIONALS from schools and colleges, or front line staff working with young people from one or many institution(s) at a time

Limited spaces available.

HOW DOES IT WORK? The Programme will be participatory in its nature enabling attendees to experience and explore the materials first hand, as is the way we invite young people to partake. Activities will include:

An introduction to the project and the film and resource;

An overview of the educational and pedagogical approach utilised within the resources;

Best practices for the delivery of the film and resource;

A practical run-through of various exercises and activities;

Safeguarding issues and answering difficult questions;

Feedback and evaluation

The sessions will also provide an opportunity to answer questions about the project, films and resources, and participants will also receive additional materials and guidance on how to successfully deliver the MY FORMER LIFE resources to young people.

ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: EXERCISES – interactive roleplay activities and problem solving games followed by

patient processing of analysing their own and others behaviour and thinking. MULTIMEDIA – using different multimedia to explore this topic.

DIALOGUE – with each other, with their teachers, with Foundation facilitators, on controversial issues from prejudice and discrimination to violent extremism.

OBJECTIVES

CHALLENGE PREJUDICE CONSTRUCTIVELY – recognising the breeding ground for ideas that can lead to divided groups and communities; how to challenge and counter this in practice and through the curriculum.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION – learn techniques that can help to promote constructive confrontation of the issues rather than dodging the subject.

COUNTERING EXTREME IDEAS AND NARRATIVES – acquiring techniques and methods. MANAGING THE UNEXPECTED – conversations or incidents of challenging or concerning

behaviour that arise during the day-to-day. OPENING A DIALOGUE challenging prejudice constructively without just shutting

sensitive discussions down and developing ideas and content to help ‘counter’ and introduce alternatives to ways of thinking.

PLANNING FOR FUTURE DIALOGUE – building difficult conversations into curricula or sessions.

Booking instructions-to book onto this course, please follow the link below, only one booking allowed per organisation, if you would like more than one member of staff to attend, then please contact the Calderdale PREVENT team to discuss your needs.

Facilitator introduces a personal journey of radicalisation and extremism that contains several key factors, life events and choices. The aim of this ‘story’ is to bring to light how vulnerability is preyed upon by various extremist narratives and how individuals can begin to be affected by the pull of such simple and black and white ways of looking at the world. With real life accounts of the factors that can push someone towards harmful means, participants are encouraged to think about:

Factors that can create vulnerability which can then be exploited by others How can an individual build resilience to vulnerability through seeking support The impact of mis-informed choices on life and personal development How to build critical thinking skills in order to stay safe from harmful narratives

Output (Part 2): The second part of the workshop lets participants work individually or in small groups on outlining lessons learnt from Part 1, and how to apply to them themselves individually and those around them. With help from the facilitator(s), the participants begin to see the patterns of behaviour change that can lead to radicalisation and how such issues can be addressed through reaching out and seeking support from appropriate sources. This usually takes the shape of a group discussion or mini-presentations on signposting concerns, supporting others and creating a safe space for trust. This session is facilitated with resources and questions/ prompts.

Suitable for frontline staff and those in contact with vulnerable people

Workshop sessions to be confirmed. To register your interest for this course, please contact the PREVENT team via

A Creative Approach to the Prevent Duty & British Values

FREE WORKSHOPS FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS AND GROUPS (ADULTS

AND YOUNG PEOPLE) A new exhibition and workshop has been designed by the Peace Museum to explore themes

relating to the choices people make in times of conflict.

During a guided tour of the exhibition, participants explore the core British Values through the story of two brothers during WW1, one of whom joined up and the other who became

a conscientious objector.

Together, we explore what influences our decisions, how to stand up for our rights, how propaganda works and discover those who joined up to serve their

country and those who spoke out for peace in times of conflict.

Following the tour, a practical workshop with participants brings the topics into the present day, exploring the world today and how we can open up dialogues and respond to the threat of

extremism.

Choices also has a range of resources for teachers to follow on this work across the curriculum, engaging students in relevant and thought provoking debate.

Choices has been delivered to thousands of young people and adults across the North. It is an innovative and creative approach to the delivery of the Prevent Duty  which has been identified

as a model of Best Practice by the Prevent team at the Home Office and is now being rolled out across the UK. Due to popular demand, the project is returning to Calderdale for its third year

The Peace Museum is delighted to be able to offer the Calderdale partnership free workshops for their students/groups/parents/governors.

FREE SESSIONS FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS & GROUPS

A new session has been designed by the Peace Museum to explore the dangers posed by online grooming and radicalisation.

Due to popular demand, Safe Online is returning to Calderdale for a second year.

The session will:

Build awareness around strategies used by perpetrators

Raise understanding of techniques used to radicalise young people

Reduce vulnerability to manipulative content Recognise the signs of someone who may be

succumbing to grooming Give practical guidance on what to do if presented by

malicious content Signpost further support for those who may need it

Using real life case studies, the session will explore how seemingly innocent online relationships can be a cover for more sinister motives through a range of media including Facebook, online gaming, texting and dating apps.
