Dear Travelers,

India is exotic, colorful, ancient and emerging! Have you always wanted to travel to India but have been con-cerned that the group may be too large and crowded? Or that the itinerary would not be right, or the hotels not at a comfortable standard? Were you worried that you would be left on you own to navigate a chaotic country?

For many years a number of our most loyal and elite clients have asked me to design a private tour to India. On this itinerary they wanted to see the most magnificent palaces, forts, ruins, temples, and scenery northern India had to offer. They wanted to meet with local historians, politicians, and University professors who could help them have a deeper understanding of the spiritual and religious customs of India’s diverse and indigenous people. They wanted to travel with a congenial group of well-edu-cated, intelligent travelers in a safe and seamless manner. They also requested that I secure one of the best guides in the country to be with them throughout their journey. I am pleased to say that we have accomplished all of these goals!

Please join Connoisseurs Tours for a private journey to India on Feb-ruary 17, 2015. This outstanding 18-day journey will encompass the highlights of northern India; where we will begin our journey exploring New and Old Delhi. We will then continue to the spiritual center and blindingly colorful city of Varanasi, considered one of the seven most holy cities of Hinduism. We will travel to Khajuraho’s three groups of World Heritage Site–listed temples, which are among the finest temple art in the world.

We will travel to Jhansi and Agra, where we will experience the magical allure of the Taj Mahal. We will experi-ence Jaipur, the city of victory. Jaipur boasts stunning hilltop forts and glorious palaces that sit as reminders of a rich royal history. Here we will see bright turbans blaze a trail through ancient bazaars. We will then travel to the magnificent blue city of Jodhpur which is an architectural masterpiece.

We conclude our journey in Udaipur beside shimmering Lake Pichola. Udaipur has a romantic setting unmatched in Rajasthan and arguably in all of India. Fantastical palaces, temples, havelis and countless narrow, crooked, colorful streets add to the city’s natural charms.

We will travel by private motorcoach, by air, by boat, by train, by horse drawn carriage, and have an opportu-nity for a short camel ride to a private tea. We will also meander with our guide by foot through India’s ancient 15th century colorful markets.

We have already accepted reservations from those who have been on an advance waiting list for this journey, and we can only accommodate 15 people. We have space for you to join us, but please know we will be accepting reservations on a first come first served basis. The staff at Connoisseurs Tours will assist you with every aspect of your travel arrangements and be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Please join us for one of the most exciting tours in the history of Connoisseurs Tours!

Sincerely,

Kathryn Waller

17 FEBRUARY: USA/DELHIWe depart today for New Delhi, India

18 FEBRUARY: ARRIVAL DELHI

We arrive in Delhi, India. After completing im-migration and custom formalities we will be met by our local guide who will escort us to a waiting vehicle for our transfer to the Leela Palace New Delhi, where we will check in to our hotel and rest. The Leela will be our home for the next three nights.

19 FEBRUARY: NEW DELHIToday we will visit New Delhi; visit Qutub Minar - a tall tower built to call the devout for prayer at an

adjoining mosque. We will also visit The India Gate (War Memorial), and the President’s house. The India Gate is a 137 ft./42 meter

high stone arch with the names of 90,000 Indian soldiers who died in WWI. The President’s house is a huge building with 340 rooms in the middle of sprawling well laid out gardens. The architec-ture herein is purely British. Delhi is made up of about 15 cities ranging from the 11th century to the present. Old Delhi

(Shahjahanabad) and New Delhi, the two most recent cities, and the heart of modern Delhi, are relatively intact. In 1911, King George’s architects - Lutyens and Baker, set in motion the design and construc-tion of Delhi’s eighth city – New Delhi. Lutyens designed an “Imperial City” having palatial-sized buildings set amid broad tree-lined avenues punc-tuated by Moghul style gardens, complete with fountains and shallow pools. Today we have also planned a meeting with a member of India’s parliament Mr. Rajya Sabha. This meeting is subject to Mr. Sabha’s schedule. (B,D)

20 FEBRUARY: OLD DELHIToday we will visit many sites in Old Delhi, a city built in striking contrast to New Delhi. We will

tour the Red Fort, built when Mughal (Muslim) architecture was at its peak. It is surrounded by a 2 km red sandstone wall and houses several

splendid buildings. The Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque) opposite the Red Fort is the largest mosque in India and one of the greatest examples of their architecture. We will make a brief stop at Raj Ghat -- Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial in black marble. The highlight is a walk through Chandni Chowk (Silver Square), the main shopping street, and a legacy of the Mughal era. This evening we will meet with a History Professor (archaeologist) followed by dinner at The Spice Route restaurant located at the Imperial Hotel. (B,D)

21 FEBRUARY: DELHI/VARANASI We will transfer to the airport for a 10:30 AM flight to Varanasi. At 11:45 AM we arrive in Vara-nasi and transfer to the Gateway Hotel. Varanasi has been the religious capital of the Hindu faith since the earliest human recordings

and is a microcosm of Indian life. Contemporary with Babylon, Nineveh, and Thebes, Varanasi is one of the oldest cities in the world, a hub of firmly rooted traditions. This afternoon we will visit the buried city of Sarnath where Buddha preached his first sermon, revealed his doctrine, and founded his monasticcommunity. Pilgrims travel from around the world to Sarnath and there are monasteries construct-ed by Buddhists from several countries. Sarnath reflects tranquility far removed from the bustle of the city. We will visit the museum at Sarnath which is among the most important in India, containing carvings representative of a whole range of styles - archaic, Mathur, Gupta, post-Gupta, and Medieval

– covering the works of sculptors from the 3rd century B.C. to the 12th century A.D. Afterwards, we will tour the city’s temples and Benaras Hindu University (Vishwanath Tem-ple. The University’s museum also contains a superb collection of Nicholas Roerich’s paintings of the Himalayas. Then we will visit Gyanvapi Mosque and Dasashwarmedh Ghat.

This evening we will enjoy an enchanting boat ride aboard a decorated vessel and partake in a Deepmala ceremony where 100 candlelit Diyas are offered in the Ganges. While cruising we will be entertained by three classical musi-cians performing on sitar, tabla and flute. We return to the Gateway, our home for the next two nights. (B,D)

22 FEBRUARY: VARANASIA dawn boat trip will take us along the bathing ghats on the holy river Ganges to witness 2,000-year old rites of prayer and devotion. The Ganges

is the most sacred and venerated river in India. We will return to the hotel for breakfast. Next we will explore the old city of Varanasi on foot. With our guide, we will walk back in time a few centuries, through a twisted maze of small streets and narrow alleys, home to numerous

shrines and pilgrim shops. We will return to the hotel for dinner and a meeting with an astrologer. (B,D)

23 FEBRUARY: VARANASI/KHAJURAHOAt 10:15 AM we will transfer to the airport to depart on a short flight to Khajuraho. Then we will transfer to the LaLit Temple View Khajuraho where we will make our home for the next two nights. The LaLit is located only 533 yards from the world heritage site of the Western Group of the Khajuraho Temples.

Khajuraho was founded in the 9th and 10th century by the rulers of the Chandela Dynasty. Khajuraho was one of the capitals of the Chan-dela Rajput kings. Out of the original 84 temples only 22 survive today. (B,D)

24 FEBRUARY: KHAJURAHOToday we will visit the famed temples of Khajuraho. The temples were built by the Chandela Kings between 950 AD and 1050 AD. The temples are divided into three groups.

It is their detailed sculpture which gives Khajura-ho its appeal and importance. Most of the tem-ples are ‘banded’ by horizontal panels of statues. The long frieze with scenes of battles, processions and hunting are some of the best examples of narrative sculpture. (B,D)

25 FEBRUARY: KHAJURAHO/ JHANSI/AGRAAt 9:30 AM we will drive to Jhansi. En-route we will visit the Orcha Temples in. Orcha is one of

the ancient cities located on the banks of Betwa River. The area has a number of historical monu-ments and the famous Raja Ram Temple. Orcha was founded in the 16th Century by the Bundela Chieftain, Rudra Pratap Singh. In the evening we will depart Jhansi railway station for a short trip to Agra station, then trans-fer to Agra to the Amarvilas where we will stay for the next two nights. At the Amarvilas, we will enjoy the luxury of our own private view of the greatest monument to love – the Taj Mahal, located a mere 600 meters away. At the time of the Mughals, in the 16th & 17th centuries, Agra was the capital of the grand Mughal Empire. During this period the city became a leading center of art, science, commerce, and culture. (B,D)

26 FEBRUARY: AGRAIn the morning, traveling by Tongas (horse carriage) we will visit the massive Agra Fort. From the fort

we will enjoy awesome views of the Taj Mahal. The elegant buildings inside reflect an inter-esting synthesis of Hindu and Central Asian archi-tectural styles. We will explore the chambers of this royal residence. This evening we will set out to see the Taj in a different light. One of the most photographed buildings in the world, the Taj Mahal still moves visitors with its perfect proportions and exqui-sitely jeweled walls.

Afterwards we will enjoy dinner at Peshawari Restaurant at the ITC Mughal hotel. This hands-on meal offers a delectable variety of authentic India cuisine. (B,D)

27 FEBRUARY: AGRA/JAIPURThis morning during sunrise, we will visit the Taj Mahal, one of the most extravagant monuments in the world. What makes the Taj Mahal unique is its perfect proportions, distinct femininity, medium of construction and ornamentation. Its marble exterior reflects rose and golden tints at sunrise and sunset, while it is dazzling white dur-ing the day. It is impossible to visualize the Taj Mahal in any surrounding other than in its para-doxical garden. Next, we drive to Jaipur, the land of the Ra-jahs. En-route,we will stop for lunch in the village

of Geejgarh. We will enjoy a visit to Chand Baori, one of the deepest stepwells in India located in

the village of Abhaneri. A marvelous architectural structure, the ancient reservoir features 3,500 nar-row steps descending 13 stories and over 100 ft. Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan province, is ornamented with monuments built by former Mughal rulers. Ambling camels and brightly

dressed locals reflect Jaipur’s desert heritage, while the teem-ing markets dis-play a profusion of handlooms and crafts. This evening we will enjoy dinner at

the hotel. Our home for the next three nights will be the Oberoi Rajvilas. (B,L,D)

28 FEBRUARY: JAIPURThis morning we will drive to the Amber Fort, a magnificent example of Rajput fort building at its best. Fortified by hills and a succession of gates, the fort was a perfect capital for the Kuchwaha Rajputs from the 11th to the 18th centuries. We will visit the gardens and the marble rooms,

which are cooled by water pouring through fine perforations in the center of the wall. This afternoon we will visit Hawa Mahal or Palace of Winds, a tall facade of almost one thousand windows, behind which royal ladies once took the air in privacy. In the late afternoon,

we experience a short camel safari through the quaint village of Samode up to the sand dunes where we can watch the spec-tacular sunset drowning into a sea of sand. High Tea will be served on the sand dunes. (B, High Tea, D)

01 MARCH: JAIPUROptional sunrise hot air ballooning. In the morn-ing we will sail within a breath of lofty hilltop forts and fine regal palaces and look down upon

sleepy villages wak-ing to to the hotel for breakfast. This afternoon we will visit the City Palace, home to an impressive collec-tion of traditional

Rajasthai and Mughal artwork, jewels, textiles and arms. We will visit the Solar Observatory - an astronomical treasure house with solar devices that give accurate predictions to the date. This evening we will enjoy a cooking demonstration followed by dinner with a local family. (B,D)

02 MARCH: JAIPUR/JODHPURToday, we drive to Jodhpur, the entrance to the Thar Desert. We will arrive in the afternoon for rest and relaxation at the RAAS Walled City, our home for the next two nights. This evening we will have a magical dinner experience. Drinks will be served on the pool deck as the sun drops down behind the spectac-ular fort, looming so close it feels as if you could

reach out and touch it. We will be serenaded by Rajasthani folk dancers and musicians playing desert tunes. We will dine in a landscaped garden oasis. (B,D)

03 MARCH: JODHPURJodhpur, the second largest city of Rajasthan, was once the capital of the Marwar state. It wasfounded in 1459 A.D. by Rao Jodha-chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs. Jodhpur has a number of historical attractions and colorful markets which specialize in antiques. It is one of the leading centers of wool, cattle, camels and salt. We will visit the mighty Mehrangarh Fort, which has been meticulously restored and opens

a window onto the splendor and beauty of a by-gone age. The views from its intricately carved windows, looking out over the cubic blue roofs of Jodhpur, are a photographer’s dream. This afternoon we will walk back in time and visit the old city, surrounded by 15th century town walls and the colorful lane of Jaisalmeriyon ki Gali.

We will visit the adjoining villages where we will see weavers, potters and the Bishnois tribal shepherds. The Bishnois were the protectors of nature for five centuries and arguably the world’s first ecologists, responsible for the survival of species such as the black-buck antelope. We will also see the semi-nomadic Raika shepherds of Marwar, whose brilliant crimson and marigold costumes would put modern de-signers to shame. We will have an opportunity to meet a local family and learn about the local cultures and traditions. We will experience
