Subtitle From The Website www.subscene.com Of The Movie Entitled “The

Avengers”. 2013. Thesis: English Department. Faculty of Letter and Fine Arts.

Sebelas Maret University Surakarta.

This research was conducted to analyze the idiom translation of the movie

entitled The Avengers taken from official subtitle and the most downloaded subtitle

from the website www.subscene.com. The objectives of this research were to find out

the techniques which are applied by the translators to translate the idioms,

furthermore to find out the quality of translation quality of idiom translation in terms

of accuracy, acceptability, and readability.

This research used descriptive-qualitative method. The research method of

this research was applied through content analysis which was done by watching the

movie, downloading the Indonesian subtitle from www.subscene.com, and making

the transcript of Indonesian idiom of official subtitle. The researcher found 32 data

from each subtitle, and so the total data were 64. Thus, questionnaire and interview

were done as the second data. Those steps were conducted to gain the score of

accuracy, acceptability, and readability; interview was done to get deeper analysis.

The findings of this research are as follows: 1) The findings of the research

in terms of translation techniques. Official subtitle applies 3 techniques in translating

idiom namely: Translation by using an idiom of similar meaning but different form,

paraphrase, and literal. The most downloaded subtitle taken from www.subscene.com

applies 3 translation techniques namely: translating by using an idiom of similar

meaning but different form, paraphrase and omission. 2) The findings of research in

terms of translation qualities. Idiom translation on official subtitle is accurate,

acceptable, readable. However idiom translation on the most downloaded subtitle

taken from www.subscene.com is less accurate, acceptable, and readable.

Due to the research findings, there is a difference between two translation

versions especially for the accuracy category. Thus, as translating idiom is not an

easy job to do, besides paying attention to the meaning of idiom as listed in idiom

dictionary, the translator should pay attention to the context of situation in which the

idiom appears. Thus, the translator can transfer the meaning of idiom with its

appropriateness with the context of situation.

Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa terjemahan idiom yang terdapat dalam film The

Avengers yang diambil dari subtitle resmi dan subtitle yang paling banyak diunduh pada website

www.subscene.com. Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan teknik-teknik yang digunakan

oleh penerjemah untuk menerjemahkan idiom dan untuk mendeskripsikan kualitas terjemahan,

yang diantaranya keakuratan, keberterimaan, dan keterbacaan.

Penelitian ini menggunaan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Metode penelitian ini dilakukan

dengan cara analisis konten yang dilakukan dengan cara melihat film, mengunduh subtitle

berbahasa Indonesia dari www.subscene.com, dan membuat transkrip idiom dalam Bahasa

Indonesia dari subtitle resmi. Dalam penelitian ini, ditemukan 32 data dari masing-masing

subtitle sehingga total adalah 64 data. Di samping itu, kuesioner dan wawancara dijadikan data

kedua. Langkah-langkah itu dilakukan untuk memperoleh skor keakuratan, keberterimaan, and

keterbacaan; wawancara dilakukan untuk memperoleh analisis yang mendalam.

Hasil analisis dari penelitian ini adalah sebagai berikut: 1) Hasil analisis untuk

penggunaan teknik penerjemahan. Penerjemah pada subtitle resmi menggunakan 3 teknik

penerjemahan dalam menerjemahkan idiom, teknik penerjemahan tersebut antara lain:

terjemahan dengan idiom yang mempunyai arti yang sama tetapi mempunyai bentuk leksikal

yang berbeda, paraphrase dan terjemahan literal. Di samping itu, penerjemah subtitle yang

paling banyak diunduh di website www.subscene.com juga menggunakan 3 teknik penerjemahan

antara lain: terjemahan dengan idiom yang mempunyai arti yang sama tetapi mempunyai bentuk

leksikal yang berbeda, paraphrase dan omission. 2) Hasil analisis kualitas terjemahan.

Terjemahan idiom pada subtitle resmi adalah akurat, berterima, dan terbaca. Sementara itu,

terjemahan idiom pada subtitle yang paling banyak diunduh dari www.subscene.com adalah

kurang akurat, berterima dan terbaca.

Mengacu pada hasil analisis, terdapat perbedaan antara dua versi terjemahan tersebut

khususnya pada kategori keakuratan. Dari penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa

menerjemahkan idiom bukanlah pekerjaan yang mudah untuk dilakukan, selain memperhatikan

pada arti idiom seperti yang terdapat pada kamus idiom, penerjemah juga harus memperhatikan

konteks situasi idiom tersebut sehingga penerjemah dapat mengalihkan pesan idiom yang sesuai

dengan konteks situasi.

This research was conducted to analyze the idiom translation of the
