Introduction

The Luminis Platform is a very flexible, powerful tool for communication and collaboration. Its flexibility means that it can be configured and customized in many different ways to make it reflect your institution’s image and culture, emphasize your perspectives, and support your processes.

This presentation will cover specific ways that this customization can be achieved, making use of examples from institutions currently using Luminis and describing recommended practices or approaches to designing and building the platform environment that will be undeniably YOURS.

How Luminis roles and other attributes work

• Attribute types• Roles (ex.: Current Student, Executive, Downtown Campus)

• Access groups (ex.: Content Administrators, Committee chairs)

• Majors, imported groups, Group or Course members

• In Platform III.x.x• Personal Announcements can be targeted to users on the basis

of a match against any of these attributes

• Channel content may be targeted to users on the basis of a match against roles or access groups

• In Platform IV• Layout fragments, Personal Announcements, and channel

content may be targeted to users on the basis of a match against a single role, access group, or other attribute, or boolean combinations thereof

A personalized portal begins with the layoutsthat different users see by default.

How Portal Layouts Work

• A user’s default layout is a composite of layout “fragments” – sets of tabs with channels in columns

• Each fragment is presented to users based on attribute matches (typically role=“x”)

• The amount and type of user customization permitted is institutionally determined

Display (UI) customizations: Examples

• Change terminology : “My Courses” “My Modules”• Edits to the group studio JSP/JSF pages to change 'course' to

'module'. These pages are installed in 'CP_ROOT/webapps/luminis/ipx/grouptools directory.

• Edit the school services schedule template(s) to change "course" to "module." These files are installed in $CP_ROOT/webapps/luminis/WEB-INF/templates/services

• Change My Courses table to remove Dept. or Instructor column • Change thtml file (template) in

$CP_ROOT/webapps/luminis/WEB-INF/templates/services
