Introduction

The Luminis Platform is a very flexible, powerful tool for communication and collaboration. Its flexibility means that it can be configured and customized in many different ways to make it reflect your institution’s image and culture, emphasize your perspectives, and support your processes.

This presentation will cover specific ways that this customization can be achieved, making use of examples from institutions currently using Luminis and describing recommended practices or approaches to designing and building the platform environment that will be undeniably YOURS.

Layouts

A personalized portal begins with the layoutsthat different users see by default.

Page 21: A Community of Learning SUNGARD SUMMIT 2007 | sungardsummit.com 1 Making the Luminis Platform YOURS Presented by: Judi Amsel, SunGard Higher Education.

21Course ID 755

How Portal Layouts Work

• A user’s default layout is a composite of layout “fragments” – sets of tabs with channels in columns

• Each fragment is presented to users based on attribute matches (typically role=“x”)

• The amount and type of user customization permitted is institutionally determined

Everyone sees these

Faculty see this

Faculty and students see this

Added by user

• What is the “right” number of tabs to start with?• What is the “right” amount of flexibility?

???

GUI with a special user account• Fragments defined for user groups by role only (by

default)• Fragments for other types of audiences can be set up with

Java customization

• In Platform IV• Layout fragments defined using portal admin utility and

managed in GUI with a special user account• Fragments can be defined for users on the basis of any set

of attributes captured in a “filter group”• Examples: All users affiliated with the School of Business,

Summary

• The Luminis platform is infinitely flexible. The hardest job may be deciding what configuration changes and customizations will best suit your institutional and stakeholder needs.

• By all means, customize! Just be sure to document your changes.
