Easter Collection
Thoughts –
A Morning with
George Washington.
A s you can imagine, the Easter Collection is considerably larger than the ordinary Sunday Collection. I usually assist the money-counters with such a large collection and take whatever task I am assigned. This year I
was assigned to the “singles” table- and I’m not talking about those who are unmarried. This is where all the one dollar bills are counted. All tolled the loose bills came to over one thousand singles. Looking at the face of George Washington over and over again, I wondered what kind of “Easter gift” this represented for the parish. Perhaps some people put in two or three singles, but even at that, you have to wonder what this says about parish support for a budget that runs close to two million dollars. Of course there are people who say, “Father, you should be grateful for whatever is contributed. Remember these are hard times; some people are on a fixed income; others are
out of work; some cannot afford more than that.” While there certainly are many factors that bear on a family’s financial situation, a donation of one or two dollars for Easter seems a bit meager by any standard. Try to purchase almost any item in the supermarket for that amount, and you won’t be successful. Don’t even think about Starbucks or Wendy’s. If such a contribution is an indication of the value an individual places on his or her church, it should make all of us feel a bit uneasy. But there is a bright side to this collection topic: the obvious generosity of other parish families who support the parish in a realistic and even sacrificial way. Proof of this may be found in the total Easter collection which amounts to over
$33,000. The fact is, a small portion of parishioners provide a large portion of financial support. To them we owe our sincere thanks.
And to those who are in the singles category (but not likely to be reading this bulletin) perhaps my remarks may get them thinking.

In our January 2, 2011 Bulletin, we printed an article titled ….. Did You Know ?
It shows how your contributions help to keep the
parish functioning. Since then we haven’t had much space to continue our plan. This week as you see all the lovely plantings, we are going to get back on track
and go to the subject of SNOW
REMOVAL...Yipes !! That’s a jump. We like to keep our readers alert.
Thank you for your continued generosity.
did you know ?
This year the number of times it snowed and
the total inches, increased dramatically. Each time it snows you must shovel, plow or pay
someone to clear the driveway, sidewalk and the path to your doorway.
The Parish must also clear the parking lot, all the walkways and all the roads leading in and
out of the Parish grounds. In some areas, salt and sand must be applied. Sometimes
employees must work extra hours to prepare the grounds for the next day.
Since the season began we have spent $ 8,000.00 on snow removal.
Your contributions help us to meet this essential need.
So now you know !

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
May 15, 2011
One of the central images of Christ in our liturgy and art
is the Lamb of God. On this Good Shepherd Sunday, we
see a contrasting image, for Christ is also the shepherd of
the sheep.
In our First Reading the passage from
the Acts of the Apostles picks up where
last Sunday’s reading left off. Peter con-
cludes his address by demonstrating to
the crowd that the Jesus whom they
crucified was the chosen one of God,
the Christ. The people are “cut to the
heart,” and this emotion leads to ac-
tion: they accept a relationship with
Jesus through Baptism. It is the same
for the whole Church in these Easter
days. We have “mourned for Christ’s
sufferings” in the seasons of Lent and
Triduum; but our mourning is meant to lead us to action,
to conversion of heart.
Second Reading: Saint Peter continues to reflect on the
reality of suffering and persecution in the early Christian
community. He directs their gaze toward Jesus. The read-
ing ends with an echo of Isaiah 53:6 we are the sheep who
had gone astray, but now we have been gathered into the
fold by Christ, “shepherd and guardian.”
In the Gospel the words of Jesus come between the
healing of the man born blind and the raising of Laza-
rus. Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees, who stubbornly
resist his words and witness, and he uses language they
should understand, for his “figure of
speech” is rich in echoes of the Old
Testament. The image of God as shep-
herd reaches back to the book of Gene-
sis, to Psalm 23, to the prophets
Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Micah. In the
second part of the reading Jesus speaks
ever more clearly: he is “the gate for
the sheep,” and his is the unmistakable
voice of the true shepherd. In the Gos-
pel according to John, the “I am” state-
ments are especially important, for in
these statements Jesus reveals his one-
ness with the Father: Jesus is both the
gate and the shepherd.

Parish social ministry Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., 731-6074
St. Vincent de Paul:
Thanks to all who remember to share food, paper goods
and toiletries with our low-income neighbors. During
the month of April, 312 individuals received food from
the pantry at least once, and food was actually provided
779 times, since some people come more than once a
month. Your kindness is greatly appreciated! This
week, our pantry needs include: cereal, jelly, canned
ravioli, tomato sauce and other tomato products,
canned fruit and vegetables (except green beans,) des-
sert mixes (cake, pudding, Jell-o, etc.), coffee and tea
(instant, regular, decaf). Paper towels and toilet tissue
are always welcome, as are napkins, tissues, etc.
Toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, dishwashing and
laundry detergent, Pampers and wipes are a special
treat since they cannot be purchased with food stamps.
As always, thank you…and please remember the poor boxes,
and to “buy one, get one free!”
We would like to offer a special word of thanks to the
wonderful people who help transporting food from
church, sorting, checking expiration dates, and shelving
the food on a regular basis. Thanks to the many folks
who bring food to the office during the week, as well!
Long Island Cares:
This past week, we received our first delivery from Long
Island Cares. Some of the food and other items are free,
and some can be purchased at a very reasonable cost, so
these items will supplement what we receive from other
sources. With one in ten Long Islanders experiencing
food insecurity, we are doing our best to help, with your
help!
Ministry of Praise:
Approximately 30 parishioners participate in our Minis-
try of Praise. This ministry addresses the prayers which
are requested by writing them in the Hear Our Prayer
book which is located under the spiral staircase on the
sacristy side of the church. On the first of the month,
these Ministers of Praise receive a letter from Sister
Christine, along with a listing of the prayer requests.
When making up the list, the requests are not dupli-
cated, which means it is necessary to write the intention
once in the month, and not each day. In addition,
many of the intentions cannot be included because it is
impossible to read them. We trust that God knows
what the intentions are, but we are unable to share them
with the Ministers of Praise if they are illegible. There-
fore, we respectfully request that (1.) the intentions be
written once for the month, and (2.) that the writing (or
better yet, printing) be easily read in order to be sent to
the Ministers of Praise. We hope those who include
their intentions in the Hear Our Prayer book understand
our desire to improve!
Meals-on-Wheels:
On May 3rd, we had a breakfast gathering with our
many Meals-on-Wheels volunteers, along with Beth
from the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen
Affairs, and Lorrette and Blair from Catholic Charities.
St. Bernard’s partners with these two agencies to pro-
vide meals to the frail, homebound elders of the Levit-
town community. Father Jerry made the point that this
is a somewhat hidden corporal work of mercy, but none
-the-less important, and it is an opportunity to see your
tax dollars at work. We thank our volunteers for their
dedication. Some have been with us since we began in
2004! We are most grateful!
