The 1991-92 season marks DaleWarland's twentieth season as MusicDirector of The Dale Warland Singers.Dedica ting his professional life toattaining the highest musical level inchoral singing, consummate musician-ship and attention to detail have beenDr. Warland's tools in building one ofthe finest choral groups in the country:The Dale Warland Singers.

Known internationally as conductor,composer, and educator, his conduct-ing schedule has included perfor-mances with such prestigious groupsas the Swedish Radio Choir, DanishRadio Choir, Oregon Bach FestivalChorus, the Mormon TabernacleChoir, and Israel's Cameran Singers. InAugust of 1990, Warland prepared thefestival chorus for performances of thePenderecki's Polish Requiem as part ofThe Second World Symposium onChoral Music in Sweden and Finland.

A member of the American Societyof Composers, Authors, andPublishers, Warland also serves asChoral Advisor to Oxford UniversityPress, U.S.A., where he is assistingwith the expansion of the OxfordAmerican choral repertoire and willcreate a Dale Warland Choral Series.

Dr. Warland has served as professorof music at Macalester College, andrecently received the DistinguishedAlumnus Award from St. Olaf Collegeas well as the Outstanding Alumnusaward from the University of SouthernCalifornia.

Jerry Rubino attended the CurtisInstitute 'of Music as a cellist and holdsdegrees in piano, music education and

conducting from Temple Universityand the University of Minnesota. Anactive free-lance musician, Mr. Rubinois regularly featured at the grandpiano in Dayton's Department Store,serves as organist and choir director ofthe Golden Valley United MethodistChurch, and often performs in soloand chamber music recitals and withMinnesota Opera and MinnesotaComposers Forum. A publishedarranger with Jenson and Word, hewas named "Who's Who in RisingYoung Americans" in 1989 and fre-quently serves as a choral clinician andadjudicator.

THE DALE WARLAND SINGERSThe Dale Warland Singers celebrates

its Twentieth Anniversary this seasonas one of America's premiere choralensembles. Based in the Twin Cities ofMinneapolis and St. Paul, the chorushas gained countless fans from concerttours, festival appearances, radiobroadcasts and sixteen criticallyacclaimed recordings.

The Singers inspire audiences with avast repertoire of a cappella musicranging from the great choral classicsto American folk songs and vocal jazz.With a 'special focus on the works ofliving American composers, theensemble is committed to providingincreased opportunities for composersand to keeping the choral genre freshand alive with new ideas. As one ofthe first choral ensembles to receive aComposer-in-Residence grant from theNational Endowment for the Arts, TheSingers appointed Minnesota compos-er Stephen Paulus as its Composer-in-Residence during its TwentiethAnniversary Season.

Performing an annual subscriptionseason in the Twin Cities, the ensemblealso tours extensively throughout theU.S. and abroad. The group has alsobeen featured on Minnesota and

As The Dale Warland Singers cele-brate twenty years of artistic excel-lence, it continues to be committed tosetting a national example of choralexcellence through its ambitious pro-gramming, commissioning and perfor-mance of new music.

HERB PILHOFERHerb Pilhofer's experience as a com-

poser, performer, arranger and pro-ducer, combined with an intimateunderstanding of the '80s computertechnology, is leading the way towarda revolutionary union of sight andsound.

Among Pilhofer's recent accomplish-ments are musical scores for nationallyadvertised television clients, as well asthe motion picture industry. He hascomposed pieces for the film SometimesI Wonder, starring Colleen Dewhurst;On the Edge, starring Bruce Dern anddirected by Rob Nilsson; and collabo-rated with Doug Trumbull of Close

. Encounters fame on his latest effort,New Magic.

Born in Germany, Pilhofer's educa-tion began at the Nuremberg MusicConservatory. His style and talent as aself-taught jazz musician soon earnedhim a place on the European ArmedForces Radio Network. In the late '50s,he studied and taught at the Universityof Minnesota and wrote the first jazzcompositions ever performed by theMinneapolis Symphony Orchestra.When the Guthrie Theater ofMinneapolis decided to hire its firstmusical director in the' 60s, theylooked to Pilhofer. His unusual com-positions eventually drew requestsfrom the Denver Center TheaterCompany and the Repertory Theaterof Lincoln Center in New York.

Pilhofer's first company won a

Grammy award and two nominationsfor the recording of Copeland's"A ppalachian Spring." His albumSpaces, a special commission of the 3MCompany, was the first digital 32 trackrecording. His "Night of The Dreams"recording, an architectural experimentin sound, was backed by ParamountStudios.

The music presented in this programwith The Dale Warland Singers wasproduced and recorded by Pilhofer", astate of the art, computer based soundstudio and a collaboration with his sonEric, an accomplished recording engi-neer and sound designer.

TOMHEGGTom Hegg, author of the much-

loved A' Cup of Christmas Tea, is a writ-er, teacher, actor, husband and father.Trained for the classical repertorystage at Carnegie-Mellon Universityand the University of Minnesota, hespent five seasons with the GuthrieTheater in Minneapolis. While there,he played Charles Dickens in BarbaraField's adaptation of A Christmas Carol.It was then that his romance with writ-ing began, and it's small wonder thatthe holiday season surfaces again andagain in his work.

Tom teaches drama at Breck Schoolthese days, and still acts from time totime in and around the Twin Cities.The Mark of the Maker is his third col-laboration with Warren Hanson, fol-lowing Up to the Lake, their book aboutsummers in northern Minnesota. TheHeggs - Tom, Peggy and Adam -make their home in Eden Prairie,Minnesota.
