A Changing of the Guards

After 35 years of wearing a police uniform, and 15 of these

years serving as Charlottesville’s Chief of Police, Tim Longo is

turning in his badge. On May 1st, he will retire from the job he

has described as a “calling” since the age of 18. His integrity,

wisdom, and charisma have helped make him a hard public

figure to see go.

“Chief Longo’s vision and leadership will be profoundly

missed,” says City Manager Maurice Jones. “The chief and his

staff have built an exceptional department dedicated to pro-

tecting our residents, businesses and visitors. He has skillfully

led our police department through very difficult times and has

always been an excellent ambassador for our City. His brand

of relational policing will be an important part of his legacy.”

The CPF is deeply grateful for all of Chief Longo’s efforts to serve the Charlottesville com-

munity with professionalism and excellence. We wish him all the best in his future endeav-

ors.

While we say goodbye to one Chief, we are excited to wel-

come a new one. Colonel Alfred Thomas from Lexington, VA

has been selected as Charlottesville’s new Chief of Police

beginning on May 23rd.

Colonel Thomas has served as the Chief of Police of Lexing-

ton since 2010. Prior to Lexington, he served at the Lynch-

burg Police Department for 20 years.

"I am truly honored to join one of the finest police depart-

ments in the Commonwealth," said Chief Thomas. "I look

forward to serving the citizens of Charlottesville and building

upon the longstanding history of providing exceptional ser-

vices to the community."

Welcome Colonel Thomas! We look forward to working with you.

Kids + Cops + Fun = a “win” for everyone We are busy gearing up for our annual Cops 4

Kids Day! The event will be held on Friday,

May 13th from 4-6pm, at the Boys & Girls

Club at 1000 Cherry Avenue once again.

The event is free and open to the public. We

anticipate hundreds of Boys & Girls Club mem-

bers and kids from all the City elementary

schools to attend.

Cops 4 Kids Day is an opportunity for police to

get to know kids in the communities that they

serve while they are off duty. And kids get to

learn how to interact and be comfortable with

police while understanding their importance

within our community. At the event, the De-

partment will show off its K-9, motorcycle and

SWAT teams, explain how the Forensics Unit

looks for clues, talk about bike safety, and

generally make itself available to the kids.

Officers run through a bouncy house with the

kids, do the limbo, shoot Nerf guns, dance,

ride bikes, play corn-hole, play in a teen bas-

ketball tournament, and eat with them— all

while they are breaking down barriers that of-

ten exist between young people and the police.

Here’s what else is going on at the CPF:

Ran a Community Leadership Police Academy for Charlottesville City Council members, neighborhood as-sociation presidents, and local members of the press. Attendees got an insiders look into the Department

during two evenings of classes.

Welcomed 6 new officers to the Department with a dinner following their Academy graduation.

Approved the funding for three $20K Housing grants for officers in 2015. The community, Department,

and families of the officers all benefit from having the officers live where they work.

Supported the Operation Santa Express program run by the CPD, which helps officers bring toys to

local kids.

Worked with local artists to host an Art Auction at The Paramount in February. Proceeds went to CPF

Community Relations activities.

On Saturday, March 26th, a thousand plastic eggs were hidden

around Washington Park for kids of all ages to find. This inaugu-

ral event was hosted by the Charlottesville Police Department

and Hunter Wyant’s State Farm Insurance Office. Events such as

this are yet another example of the “relational policing” that the

CPD believes in.

"This is an opportunity

for us to just have some fun with the area kids, to give them the op-

portunity, as well as their parents to join us, get to know their com-

munity officers, have a little fun on this day before Easter," Sgt. Ste-

ve Knick of the Charlottesville Police Department said.

Be on the lookout for more events this summer, such as the return of

the popular “Ice Cream with a Cop” at local parks throughout the

season!

The CPF seeks to improve the quality of life in Charlottesville by offering a community partner for our police department. The Foundation pro-motes excellence in police services by investing in programs that enhance our department and

yet are beyond the reasonable reach of the City’s budget. We reward excellence by cele-brating the successes of our department and

the skills of its officers. And we strengthen the connections between the department and the

public through outreach programs and commu-nity events.
