• If you are using a wheelchair, walker or just need a little extra leg room there is a special area on the right hand side of the church near the front where you can participate in the liturgy, and Communion will be brought to you. A suggestion was made recently to add a few more spots at the back of the church for the same reason. Our Building Maintenance Committee is looking into this option, we will keep you posted.

• Listening Devices – Once again thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, listening devices are available at the back of the church for anyone having difficulty hearing our sound system. I believe and many of you tell me so – that our sound system is excellent and lectors, priests, choir, and soloists can be heard clearly. However, if you are having difficulty hearing, please use the listening devices from the back of the church. Providing listening devices is one of the ways of helping our parishioners and visitors experience the spoken and sung word in our church. Please feel free to use them, and again there is no shame in using them.

I bring these concerns to your attention because we care about all of our parishioners and visitors, both young and old, and as a parish of hospitality we need to address your needs and avoid any hardships or inconveniences to those in need. If you have any concerns regarding these matters, please contact Michael, our facilities manager at [email protected]

Collection for St. Michael Congregation Continuing the tradition at St. Clare of having a semi-annual financial appeal for the benefit of the religious order looking after the parish, a special donation envelope for the benefit of the Michaelite Fathers has been included in your set of envelopes. These (red) envelopes are also available at the entrances of our church. Donations received from the September appeal will benefit our Seminary that educates and prepares future priests. Say a prayer for them as well as for new vocations to religious and diocesan priesthood. Thank you for your generosity.

On March 2, 2017, Archbishop Allen Vigneron issued a decree establishing a Missio ad gentes of the NeoCatechumenal Way for the Archdiocese of Detroit. The Missio ad gentes families have arrived from different parts of the world to minister on the East Side of Detroit. Some of these families belong to our parish and their children attend our school. Others are enrolled at other catholic schools, or attend the public schools. The families will visit all homes in the Detroit boundaries of our parish in the weeks to come.

We live in times of great confusion. The world is promoting aggressively a culture which ridicules family and faith in God. A new secular religion is appearing and we are asked to subscribe to social norms. Youth are being bombarded with social status and the pressure of what society puts in front of them. In the midst of all this confusion do you see God? Is there an answer to all the mix-up and suffering it may cause? Christ says, “Come and See” and this is the invitation we bring to you today. Come and See. Come and Listen to the Good News that will change your life. The Lord is waiting for you here. The Neocatechumenal Way is a way to deepen our faith. It is a post-baptismal faith formation. In addition to the faith formation initiatives that already exist in our parish this is another way of reaching out and inviting people to God and bringing God to People. I encourage you to Come and See and Listen. For more information about the Neocatechumenal Way: www.camminoneocatecumenale.it

It is with a deep sense of responsibility and humility that I have said yes to the task of leading the St. Philomena and St. Clare communities. Be assured of my prayers and pastoral support for you as we navigate our way. I ask that you keep me in your prayers as well.

As the Bishop’s letter stated, there will be plenty of meetings in the weeks to come, ample opportunity to get to know each other, celebrate our faith together and enjoy each other’s company at social gatherings. As we journey together to Unleash the Gospel in our schools and churches, families and relationships, places of work and relaxation, may our hearts be transformed into the Joyful Missionaries of Christ. Have a blessed week,

Fr. Andrew Knights Installation of Assembly Officers On August 26, 2017, the newly elected officers were installed for the new fraternal year. The fraternal year is from July 1st 2017- 30th June 2018. After we celebrated Mass with Color Corp from 3 Assemblies that went from the back of the church to the baptismal font the officers were installed in the church. The Master of the 4th Degree of Michigan District One John Hundiak and along with his Marshal Tom Schmidt the Officers of each Assembly were installed separately. Each Officer was given his charge for his office. After that part of the ceremony the Officers were presented with the jewel of their office in the Assembly. The Ladies of the Sir Knights participated in the ceremony too by putting the jewel of the office of the Sir Knight around his neck. After the ceremony was over Fr. Andrew Kowalczyk took a group photo and so did others. Then we proceeded down to the social hall for a m e a l a n d refreshments. And we had a good time talking and sharing stories with our Brother Sir Knights.

Christian Service and Stewardship

Christian Service New Beginnings

Please keep the people of Houston and the surrounding area in your prayers. Many of the residents are still under water and only beginning to think about returning to their homes and getting back on their feet. I encourage you

to continue to find ways to help. We all know this is going to take months, if not years. Here is a list of a few organizations.

Red Cross: Visit redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS or text the

word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Salvation Army: You can donate money online at disaster.salvationarmyusa.org or by phone at 1-800-725-2769.

Monetary donations provide the greatest flexibility in assisting families and agencies get done the work that is needed. Mass Mob donations: Help stock our St. Clare Emergency Food Pantry by bringing boxes of Mac & Cheese or jars of peanut butter & jelly to the September 17 11:00 AM mass. Eagle Scout Project: Support St. Clare grad Maki Thornton’s Eagle Scout Project placing pavers around the Charlevoix flag pole. His work will enhance our new sign on the brick wall next to the flag pole. Donations welcome to help pay for his pavers and supplies. Checks may be made out to St. Clare with Eagle Scout Project in the memo line. Thanks Maki for helping make St. Clare more beautiful!

Stewardship Thoughts

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Scripture readings from the prophet Ezekiel and St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans remind us of the commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves. In St. Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus instructs us to reconcile with those who wrong us, in a spirit of forgiveness, and to do so through prayer. Prayer is a fundamental principle of Christian stewardship; it is our direct and personal communication with God. The 20th century Italian saint, St. Padre Pio, exclaimed, Prayer is oxygen for the soul! In the Gospel, when Jesus proclaims, For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them, it demonstrates how personal prayer becomes communal prayer. As we strive to deepen our relationship in Christ in a spirit of evangelization, we, as Christian stewards, acknowledge the importance of daily prayer. This extends to weekly prayer with our parish communion at Sunday Mass — the highest form of communal prayer. During Mass, Jesus is present with us in our communal prayer and, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, in Holy Communion, which provide strength and healing in our lives. What a powerful combination! What a tremendous gift! Begin making daily prayer a habit by setting aside three to five minutes to converse with the Lord.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Sign up in advance for this important training session.

9/13 AND 9/20 - 5:30pm-9:30pm at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church. Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches a 5-step action plan to offer initial help to young people (ages 12-18) showing signs of a mental illness or in a crisis, and connect them with the appropriate professional, peer, social, or self-help care. The training introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention and teaches individuals how to help a youth experiencing a mental health crisis or challenge. You will participate in role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis. This course does NOT train participants to diagnose or provide any counseling or therapy. Instead, it offers concrete tools and answers key questions, like "what do I do?" and "where can someone find help?" Register today by phone: 313.447.1374; email: [email protected]; online: familycenterweb.org.
